FREE TOOL - Calculate AF Fine Adjust for multiple body and lens combos!

Great work and thank you for sharing.

Begs the question why every body and lens delivered shouldn’t be delivered with a calibration “number” / certificate .... this value could be measured as the final QA step before boxing?

When the user receives a new lens all they need to do is cross reference a table/calculation where they input the body’s value and the lens value and it tells them what value to input into the fine adjustment? This should work should it not?

Wow. Hard to pick just one but I did. Congratulations to all the finalists.

Maybe this is an indication that we need more “rivers and fjords” contests with some additional criteria. Such as, season, angle of view, time of day, presence of human activity, cold, hot...

Smug Mug vs Flickr

First. I am NOT a professional photographer and so do not want to falsely project my needs as similar to the other posters.

My only reason to add a post is to share that as a consumer who has used the lowest tier of SmugMug for about 5 years I have been very happy with their product.

I may be an optimist or neive but I would assume that part of the technical problems may be on the sellers side (Yahoo) and not just the buyers side. It must be a lot of work to untangle Flikr from the Yahoo! Web.

Personally I have little at risk, unlike a pro photographer whose livelihood depends on their product, so I will stick out the merger for a year and see what it brings.

The speed of back button focus vs your shutter release

I suspect it's your thumb. When timing high school track meets I remember being instructed to use the forefinger instead of the thumb because we were told it was not as fast/repeatable. I never asked for references so I am not sure if it is a wives tale or fact.

But I'm in the same boat.... Just moved to back button focus on K-3ii and find my old habits hard to break.

And .... Pentax, make the camera wake up on back button focus press please.

while it might not be like commanding a stepper motor... " focus, shoot, back up 30 impulses, shoot, go forward 60 impulses, shoot, ..." why wouldn't using the micro adjustment bias feature be feasible: "focus, shoot, adjust micro focus bias + 2 steps, re-focus, shoot, adjust micro focus bias -4 steps, shoot, ..." This may not be great for handheld

The focus adjustment bias feature is built into the camera already...:) let's take more advantage of it

AND while you are at it here is what I want from the firmware in the micro-focus adjustment/calibration menu:
here is how it would work:
I get the camera set up on a tripod and pointed it at calibration target, ...
I go into the Micro Focus calibration menu and then select sample focus then hit the shutter button
1 Camera sets Focus adjustment to +10
2 Camera moves Lens to infinite focus
3 Camera focuses on target
4 Camera puts up the mirror for two seconds and takes exposure
5 Camera moves Lens to close focus
6 Camera focuses on target
7 Camera puts up the mirror for two seconds and takes exposure
8 Camera decrements focus adjustment 1
9 camera repeats steps 2 through 8 until focus adjustment is -10
The result is 42 exposures
It may take 2 minutes or so to run through the protocol

I'm assuming you could also make the camera write something into the EXIF Data to let you know what the settings were

Take set of 42 exposures back to your computer... you find the best one... and that is the adjustment to you should use.

If the software was really fancy it would make sure the aperture was wide open or Close before being allowed to execute. It might also demand low ISO, high state of charge on the battery, centre focus point, high shutter speed, turn off shake reduction etc.
