While I'm still a newbie here (posting wise), some may have realised that nature is probably my favourite genre to photograph. Dogs/pets are up there too but that is because during pre-COVID times I would spend most weekends competing at dog shows. I would show dogs far more than I would photograph. I nearly always have my Pentax camera with me and it's great when I can combine both of my hobbies on the same trip away. Sometimes when I've finished competing for the day I can grab my gear and just go for a walk, looking for birds or anything else.
This picture, while taken some time ago is still one of my favourite spider macros. My daughter and I were away for a weekend of dog shows and on the last day when we were packing up our campsite this guy crawls out from between our bags. Needless to say I can't waste an opportunity for an interesting photo so I whack the macro lens on and lay down on the grass with it while my daughter keeps packing up. Love the sense of being in its face. :) |

Today my partner and I took two of our Vizslas off to a doggie play date on the foreshore of Sandgate, Brisbane. It was lovely to see about a dozen Hungarian Vizslas running around the beach chasing each other, playing ball and generally having a blast. There will be some tired dogs tonight for sure. Loved this old girl. Still in there mixing with the youngsters. <3 |

Nature (Wildlife and Landscapes) and Pets are my main genres. I rarely touch portraits as I'm just not comfortable directing people and I feel those shoots need to be planned more. Portraits are definitely hard for me but every now and then I have a go. If I think about it though human portraits shouldn't really be that much different to pet portraits except for the communication. I should really experiment some more, can't get better by avoiding it. |

I'm eagerly waiting the official release of the K-3iii and to read some reviews. Higher frame rate, better AF, better tracking, better high ISO performance are all things important to me as enjoy photographing birds. I also photograph canine events fairly regularly and it's pretty much the same features that are useful with birds are also useful with the dogs. Price will come in to it though so it'll be interesting to see where it sits in my local market. Atm I'm certainly leaning towards purchasing one..... but then swapping out my Sigma 50-500 for the Pentax 150-450 is pretty enticing too. :)

I like that philosophy... my wallet wouldn't cope though. My dilemma is K-New or 150-450 lens (I own a K-3ii and a K-1). The 150-450 would be useful for birding and no doubt significantly better than my Bigma. It would also be with me for a lot longer than another camera body, but it'll still be significantly more $ than K-New. I'm curious as to what features will be in the K-New, so I wait... Really I want both, my bank balance says... mate, you can only do one. :D

That is my upgrade schedule so suits me. I'm happy for Pentax to come out with a new flagship product every 4 years. As I use both APS-C and FF I'm upgrading one format every two years. Others may like a shorter upgrade cycle than every 4 years if they're shooting with 1 format. That gets a bit expensive for me so in that instance I'd probably skip a cycle and do every 2nd new release for each format. We're getting to the pointy end for the K-new release... can't wait for full details and the unit to be in stores. :D
I also wonder, when do we hit the point when upgrades are hardly worth doing, or at least, infrequently. I remember the humble PC beginnings and the rate of improvements early on meant that regular upgrades were nearly a necessity. Now when computers are pretty fast already the improvements seem minimal. When something already happens quickly, to make it 25% faster hardly seems worth forking out thousands of dollars.

I'm expecting a similar price, mind you that it's all a guess seeing that we don't know the full feature set. I expect an APS-C flagship to be priced less than the FF flagship even if it is newer although the gap may be narrower than if two new products were released together. Pentax have always delivered products with great bang for the buck so I would expect the prices to be below other brands comparative models. In Australia the XT-4 is around the AU$2,900 (although if you go searching you can find online stores selling them for AU$2,100). A D500 can be bought in store for as low as AU$2,000, the KP is under AU$1,300 and a K-1ii can be bought for AU$2,800. If K-new is around the XT-4's store price of AU$2,900 then as much as I'd like to upgrade my K-3ii I probably won't be doing it until prices drop. I bought my K-3ii new for around AU$1,500 and I'm guessing, or rather hoping, that K-New will be under AU$2,000. With any luck we should all know in a few weeks.

In Australia the K-1ii is around AU$3,000 (body only) while the KP is AU$1,200. I think there would still need to be some price difference between the APS-C and Full-Frame flagships. I'm guessing at an $1,750 to $2,000 price range for K-new. When I purchased my K-3ii I think they were around the AU$1,500 price region.
I would love K-New to be targetted more towards wildlife enthusiasts and action/sports photographers, that's what I'm hoping for. They will definitely get some more of my money if they deliver there. I'll just have to wait and see. I just wish they'd hurry up!! :D

Yesterday my partner and I took our gang of dogs off to the beach. The youngsterof the pack, Celeste, had a great time and I managed to catch her while she was laying fairly quietly on the sand (only briefly :) ). |

This bee does not carry pollen on its legs instead it holds the pollen under the abdomen. It's very intriguing watching this fellow bend it's back over so far that it exposes the underside of the abdomen. |

This image is not as sharp but shows better how the bee bends... Say that fast 3 times after a couple of rums. :)

I can only wait eagerly like the rest of us to see what the Pentax engineers will deliver. I've owned Pentax cameras since the Super A days. With a K10D, K-5, K-3ii and K-1, the holy trinity of zooms and a few other bits and pieces, I'm too invested in the landscape. If ever I was going to change systems it should have been before buying the K-1 and the zooms.... but I just like using the Pentax cameras. I'm sure I'll like the K-New and whatever deficiencies I find for the type of things I shoot, I'll just work around them as I've done with the models before. I know it'll be a step up from the K-3, hopefully in the areas where I'd like a little help.

As someone that's new to posting on PF I have found this thread and other similar ones quite a hard slog to read through. I get that we are all passionate Pentax users and we all have many needs/wants for our gear based on how and what we shoot but the tone can get a bit much at times. We cop enough from users of other brands without getting into each other.
I can't wait for K-New, it seems like forever. While the drip feeding of tidbits feels like a change for Pentax I just want the official announcement, release date and spec sheet. I like everyone else have my wishlist. I like new toys and as a new flagship there will be improvements over the K-3ii so I'll more than likely be grabbing one unless it's a ridiculous price, which isn't very Pentax as they are always such good value. Flippy screen/ no flippy screen is not a deal breaker for me although having one would be nice. A bigger brighter OVF sounds good but the eye sensor to turn off the screen hasn't really been an issue for me with the K-3 or K-1 unless of course we're getting a touch screen with it and then the extra 3mm for the eye piece won't be near enough for my pointed nose so I guess the sensor will be useful then.
While I think Pentax has a focus towards the landscape and portrait photographers I shoot other genres. I like photographing wildlife, birds and bugs in particular and I'm also regularly covering canine events. My hope for K-new is fast accurate AF and improved tracking particularly for my canine events where I'm following dogs trying to get movement shots. Black dogs are notoriously hard to focus on, even when they are not moving. A bigger buffer with faster clearing because by the time I'm shooting the 2nd dog in a class I'm often losing frames because I'm waiting for frames to be written to the SD card. Greater coverage of the screen with the AF points. For large dogs the bottom row of AF points may line up with the dog when I compose my shots for small ankle biters there's not a hope in hell, it's shoot wider and crop (I usually try to include handler and dog in the frame).
My wish list isn't huge and it's probably similar to what some other's may want. I'll just have to wait and see what they give us and assess the value for myself. If I try and guess what's in it I'll get it wrong for sure. :) |
