hi thanks very much. There's a bit of trailing close up. My tripod is not the greatest which doesn't help.
The 300mm picks up the star colour nicely and is easy to focus which was a surprise. I used a bahtinov mask, which simplified it a lot too.
The lightrack II is fantastic. I managed to get one good shot of another starfield at 230 seconds

got this using the Lightrack II mount and photo tripod.

10x 120 second images stacked, under light polluted skies.

I used the handy but restricted flucard to help focus the camera lens a check images

it offers much but delivers little
Lots of niggles.
Like interface doesn't display properly in landscape with a regular laptop.
Individual file transfer - useless
card beeps like a b1tch and drops out when inserted into a sd reader on a computer.

good points - you can view images on a phone or pad - how trendy.
it can take a remote shot. Although so can a £5 wireless shutter release.

I used it for focus in astrophotography and it was nice to see the quality of the images on a bigger pad screen
It could be so much more though, pity

Many thanks everybody. The K-3 has proven to be really excellent for this kind of thing. The Meade 127mm 5000 scope is also great, Not in stellar league like Tak's etc but very good overall. Weather is the continual enemy. I suspect the K-3 will perform well on long exposures as well, hopefully up to 6 minutes.

that's a really nice close up. Very well done. Very sharp. The lens you used must be pretty decent, especially with regard to CA. Focus is really nailed. The stacking result is really good. I like the fact that it can 'save' a potentially ruined night of imaging. The shots on this forum are amazing and show what folk are doing with camera lenses, better than many a dedicated telescope. I'm hoping the low noise of the K-3 will be good for imaging large areas of the night sky. I have a stepdown ring for the front so that I can effectively step down my lens a bit to remove star spikes.

wow 4800mm, That's something. Would love to see the panorama if you have it. I did use a barlow lens, effectively doubling the magnification but found the result was actually worse, probably due to local seeing conditions. I will check out the stacking software you mentioned. I did try Registax but my PC ground to a halt while trying to process the images. I wish the K-3 had the ISO 80 mode as this might give even better resolution. I just got a Pentax 300mm prime so will try this next time. I also have a rather nice Canon 200mm f2.8 which is great and I can bodge it to the K-3 for fully manual shots.

Attached is another moon shot from a while ago.

Thanks a lot. I wanted to push the K3 sensor and improve on what I was doing with my old Canon 1100d. Hopefully I'll get a chance to shoot Orion and a few others soon

hi yea I should have said. It's a single exposure. I don't like stacking such a bright object as it can usually be done in one shot. Stacking can introduce some anomalies. Good for deep space stuff though.

I had to take over 50 exposures before I found one that was right. Wind, turbulence and camera settings all added to the session. I used a remote control on the shutter to minimise shake

I should have switched off Noise Reduction but it hasn't hammered the image too much I hope

I ordered a Pentax 300mm HD tele lens for my K3. Item advertised as in stock. Ordered and went through the whole payment system. They charged my card immediately. A day or two later, got an email saying item as out of stock. I asked for a refund by return email. Nothing! Several emails and calls, even Facebook, and nothing. I am now trying to chargeback with my credit card company. One chap in the shop blamed another part of the company for the problem.

hmm. If you `re tempted by £20 or so savings, don't do it! You will get severe runaround and hassle. Zero communication or help. Customers treated like an inconvenience. Once they have your money, they don't care. So do yourself a favour and get your photography item somewhere else. Life is too short.

This is just my experience, other may have had a great time, but I will not be using them again.

yes I would say pretty good. I will be honest no DSLR I have ever owned has been a patch on a dedicated CCD camera but they cost far more, only do one thing and for the casual imager, may be overkill

here's a lunar shot with the k3 and a 127mm telescope

many thanks everybody. I did get a bit more noise with the K-3 that I expected at ISO100 but will have a play with settings to see if I can improve

Turns out I had EX sharpness turned up 2 notches which resulted in a few 'jaggies' showing up in the image. Not too hard to process though.

managed to get a shot of the moon using a 127mm Meade refractor telescope running at f7.5, no filters

The K-3 was attached using a M42 adapter. I used a remote to avoid camera shake

was done In Dublin Ireland for a nice day of generally messing about. Took the K-3 and a 200mm SMC Takumar f4 lens plus a 35mm DA lens

I tried to do a bit of 'street photography' but really just wanted to try out the camera and lenses. Tried a few of the On camera filters
Really enjoyed this camera, i'm new to it but it's a great performer

some focus,ISO and DOF issues but not too bad.

just got one of these and I must say I am impressed. The only issue is that 4k video shuts off after 7-10 minutes but this seem to be par for the course as it is pretty CPU intensive.

I had my Z2 and my lovely K-3 out recently and did a spur of the moment comparison. This is not scientific and controlled in any way and probably a bit unfair but it does give you an idea of the quality of the Z2. The K-3 has much more zoomability (is that a word:))

top is k-3

bottom Z2

hi all

many thanks for the info and experiences. Clifton Cameras, the retailer who sold me the camera sent it back to Pentax. It may take 4 weeks for them to look at it and return it to me.
Pentax have said, upon the description I have given them that the noise is normal and is not something to be concerned about. I shall post up their report once received.

The noise in not uniform like a servo/motor which although strange would not I guess be that unusual

They are going to check the camera over though to be sure.

I am happy enough if all K-3's make this noise. If the advanced features of the camera require that a certain level of audible noise be produced, it just seems rather loud and err.. erratic
I am delighted with the camera, at least for still imaging. It is a quantum shift from my old Nikon D5000. Video seem pretty decent but i'm not so worried about this as I have an HDV camera for this.

hi

First up I appreciate the replies on this.

I have just tried the camera without SR on and the noise is still there. It sounds like a crackling or hissing. Like small gremlins having a fry up. Not very scientific I know but imagine an audio amplifier turned up but with no signal input. Like it's amplified noise.
I can hear it from about 3 feet away from the camera. The noise is also irregular. i.e no like a servo or some sort of regulatory system, more random.

I have contacted Pentax service and they say they will take a look at it. I can't imagine this is normal on such a high end camera

Hi

I have recently purchased a K-3 camera 3 months ago. It has developed a fault. I only noticed it tonight while trying out some live view shooting in a quiet space.

Once the camera is put into video mode or live view, there is a strange hissing / crackling sound coming from inside the camera! It is very annoying and is the kind of thing as an audio engineer I have head when an electronic component is faulty. It really is quite loud and sounds like the noise one hears if one puts a shell or cup to ones ear. The noise is there if the audio on the camera is up or down

Hopefully Pentax uk will have decent customer service as I think this K-3 will have to go back. Such a pity as the camera takes smashing photos
