Few products. Ricoh makes quality product. I prefer a brand that release 1 great product over a brand that release tons of useless ones... ;-)

Photography business for many good reasons is very conservative — because many details in camera design, lens design and production chain must be robust, well and conservatively made. However, reviewers are often individuals who think that seriousness and conservative spirit of camera production should be extended further into the photograph.

Which is not true, of course, and makes photography such a dull, predictive, stereotyped and unimaginative affair. Pentax, as a unique bunch of people behind a brand name, is different than many others, and it would like people in general to take a more relaxed approach and make innovative kind of images, make their imagination burst in all directions so to speak. Thus Pentax starts by confusing convention in camera design: using very small sensors to make very small and non-intimidating cameras, naming lenses as 'toy lenses', making cameras in 100s of colours, etc.

But the message is stopped by the self-appointed gatekeepers of the 'serious photography' fandom: by different 'online experts', influencing bloggers, 'serious reviewers', old sea dogs, and one-stick-measures-all websites like the DPR, DXO, etc. They don't get the fun side of things, they don't know how to value expressiveness of a photograph because creativity cannot be measured with their rulers and yardsticks — creativity in fact means throwing firm rulers away.

Therefore they write unfavourable 'reviews', which are nothing but manifestos of their own lack of image-nation.

I think the rant is entirely justified. Ricoh would be crazy to announce its plans too far in advance because:
1) it would damage sales if current models, like the K-3
2) it would tip of the competition to their plans and schedules
3) it risks disappointing customers if a delay out cancelation occurs

The thing is that people have incredible delusions of entitlement and believe they have the "right" to know everything there is to know, even a company's confidential plans.

Hang on, let's not get carried away here. I have been a business copier/printer/network services client of Ricoh's for almost 8 years. Not once has anyone invited/mentioned/discussed ANYTHING about future copier direction/new models/future plans. In fact I have worked with 4 different sales people and 3 different repair techs and NONE of them have had any idea what is happening at Ricoh beyond what model they are told to sell this month.

And though I don't have first hand knowledge I seriously doubt that is any different at any other company. What the sales people know will be communicated to clients/prospects who will in turn pass that info on to the competition's sales person when they stop by with donuts. Anything sales knows the world knows very quickly, so you don't tell sales any more than they need to know. And you tell your customers even less. Why on earth would I tell potential clients about the new whizbang copier coming out next year when I need to sell them a copier NOW.
/rant
Sorry for the rant but I am tired of everyone complaining that Ricoh (or any other company) should be open and sharing with it's 'loyal' customers. Never going to happen and they would be stupid to do it.

Pentax a No Show at Big Show

I spent a couple of years researching DSLRs until finally buying into Pentax (the K5) about 3 years ago. In the end, I decided based on:
  1. In-body shake reduction (⇒ Canon and Nikon out)

  2. Superbly built and very compact lenses (I have 3 Limiteds)

  3. Great high-ISO performance

  4. Very solid weather sealed body.

I have since progressed to the K3. Now, half way through 2014, all those criteria still apply, and I would still choose Pentax if I were starting from scratch. Sure, there are bells and whistles where they are behind the game, but they are not my priorities. And they are still innovating, albeit painfully slowly at times; the K3 is a big leap, and the 645Z looks fabulous. I'm not sure whether or not I care about FF, the K3 probably fills all my photographic needs. I can get Pentax gear at good prices from multiple Australian web stores, so why should I care if they show up at every obscure marketing event.

Pentax is NOT doomed!

There is not enough evidence to say that Ricoh is not going to invest anymore funds to the Pentax R&D. Since last year new products were introduced; flash units, TCs, the K-3, the film copier, the 645Z and so on. The k-mount road map has been updated and I believe all these actions point more to the direction of keeping Pentax alive.
