It's great we are blessed with both Ben and Gordon. I admire both for what they bring us. As you said Gordon's analysis shows us the sensor is very good with slight limitations which I am happy to know about.
Now where is the guru of AF so we can decide if it's worth upgrading from the K10D?

Ben,
A long time ago you outlined your method when using PS and I still use it, thanks for the help. I'll try this new approach this weekend. Always grateful for your willingness to share your knowledge.
Thanks,
Ken

The only time I print is when I want 11 X 14 or 16 X 20 prints for display or gifts. Adorama not only does an outstanding job both with speed of delivery and quality I have no reason to print at home. BTW they run sales all the time and the pricing is crazy. Right now 8 X 10 are $1.19 each. 11 X 14 are on sale often at $2.49 each and the last time I bought 16 X 20 they were $6.95 each.

First good move I've seen out of Pentax marketing. Congrats to them and welcome to the internet age. Now let's see some aggressive viral marketing.

Not that I don't believe some of the people that have tried the K-7 AF. it's just the idea of hearing the opinion of a skeptically minded person before I race to the store and buy one.
Please tell me you plan on getting your hands on one ASAP and will let us know your impressions.
Thanks,
ken

When the k20D first came out a lot of early adapters that had k10D's were saying the AF was better. It took a while before more hard nosed buyers appeared and said no, not much difference at all. Think I'll sit on the sidelines until this issue is thoroughly beat to death.

It creates a new class of DSLR, The affordable compact outdoor enthusiast. This puts Pentax into a niche that separates them from everybody else. The interesting thing is that it might be just good enough to draw sales away from the larger units and the yet to arrive smaller units that will copy the Panny GH-1.
My bet is Ben will be raving about the form factor of this thing. If the reviews show the AF speed, tracking, and low light ability is up to snuff both my K10D and Sony A700 will be going up for sale.
Let's hope the marketing department doesn't drop the ball on this one.

I've not posted for the last several month because the rampant speculation was just to far out for me. Glad to see there are still rational people like you making the occasional intelligent post.
Thanks,

This whole discussion is B*** S***. I bought a Sony A700 and some cheap A** old Minolta lenses and a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 for less than $300 each. The speed of the AF on all of them blow my K10D away. When Pentax makes a body that can give me the same speed I get out of a 10 year old cheap third party lens on the A700 I'll buy one.
Excuse time is over. The idea we will have to buy expensive SDM glass to get decent AF is ridiculous.

So Pentax will become the first company in the history of modern marketing to sell both a premium line along with a low cost product in any product group? Sorry, can't happen. They would have to either have the personality of Dr Jekyll or have two separate staffs. They would also have to add at least two more bodies to the line and we already know they can't handle that.
But just for fun let's say they can hold on to 3.5-4.5% of the market with the "Value added" line they now produce. That means this new premium line would need to get a minimum of 5.5% of the market to reach their goal. In light of the new pressure Panny, Oly, and Samsung will bring to the market with the new smaller cameras you think that is possible?
If you really believe Pentax is going the premium route you also have to accept they will become a 4-7% niche player.

This statement makes it sound like you have made a significant shift in where you think Pentax is headed, or am I reading you wrong. A premium brand with prices to match will certainly not grab a very large market share which is what you were convinced Pentax was going to be able to do.
Are you now saying Pentax is going to become a niche player? If so welcome aboard! The definition of your niche may not be the one they go after but I do agree it needs to be a niche market.

I'd buy in a NY minute. Even a 4/3 sensor would get my money.

I think you misunderstood what I said. Smaller, yes. EVIL, yes. Images quality equal to the K20D, yes. AF speed and Low light focusing equal to a Sony A 700, yes. A unit like that would be much more than a niche item even with a new mount.

Welcome to both of you. When you get an answer to your question call me and ask for Mr. Blue. That's not my name but I'm going to hold my breath until you call and that is what color I'll be by then. Waste some time and read any one of a dozen or so threads in this section and you will see nobody know nothing, even the ones that sound like they have inside info.

Couldn't disagree with you more. Samsung might muck up their design because of ignorance but somebody is going to hit the market with a small interchangeable lens EVIL unit that is going to become a major force. Us non film based shooters want it and we are the major portion of the market. If someone creates a unit with AF as fast as the Sony A 700 and they use an APS-C size sensor I'll buy it in a New York minute along with two or three lenses regardless of mount.

Thanks! So this is "Good news, Bad news" kind of thing. It's probably not a good idea to buy any new body for the next six months because of all the new people getting trained and up to speed. On the plus side 200 people should be able to up production significantly. That has to translate into new models that Hoya is very high on.
Does anybody know how many production workers were employed prior to this?

Nice try Ben but am afraid your Gonzo style will once again fall on deaf ears. Your type of advertising is one of the few that would work for a company like Pentax but some people, specifically Ned B., are stuck in the 70's. To bad, I'd love to see Pentax develop a personality based approach that used some of the low cost viral marketing tools that are available in today's internet world.
The money they spent on that silly martini glass glossy ad would have paid for a full blown viral program.

So this "HOT EXCLUSIVE LIMITED EDITION" is now being hawked by one of the biggest discounters in the country? I guess the U.S. marketing department led by Ned B. didn't do a very good job of getting it pushed out through the specialty stores that he has said will be the backbone of Pentax's direction.

Or is more like it. He strikes me as the type that is just along for the ride.
Just a cautionary note on the layoffs. When Hoya bought Pentax they supposedly cut everything to the bone at that time. Now they come back and make even further cuts that would have to include some essential personnel.
It won't surprise me if the new units are postponed until the end of the year or even later.

Most of the responses have been more of a wish list rather than predictions of what we think Pentax will do. My guess is they have decided they might be able to grab off some of the NX business by producing units similar in feature set but based on the K-M body size. LV, CDFA, and PDFA will be incorporated along with new lenses that take advantage of these new features. There might even be two models, entry level and advanced amature. The PDAF and low light focusing may or may not be improved over the K20D.
They will sell it as a "Real" dslr with a size near the NX type units. How well they implament the new AF systems and low light capacity will determine if I will find it a good personal fit.
