Very disappointed with K 5 photos

I couldn't agree more with the previous post. I have a Nikon D300s and the K5 I always shoot RAW and edit in ACR or NX2 so as I have better options available to alter the photo. Here's one I took yesterday with the Nikon the top photo is the unprocessed the 2nd is procesed and I also had to alter the white balance, one thing I don't have to do with the K5 as it does a better job than the Nikon on Auto mode.

I am starting to really like Bibble 5 but could someone tell me how to use the crop tool, when I select the area to crop for the life of me I can't work out how to save the cropped photo.

Pentax 16-45mm lens help.

Yes it's more noticeable than my Nikon lens and when you shake the lens you can here it but I'm not too worried as the lens is only a stop gap as I think I will eventually get another Tamaron 17-50mm f 2.8, the first copy I had had bad focussing problems at anything below f5.6 and especially f 2.8.
This focus problem at 16mm on my Pentax lens is on distance sujects as you said, so that is what the call front focussing ?

I bought a second hand Pentax 16-45mm lens and today it arrived and I'm pretty impressed with the image quality not sure if the focal length is long enough though.
But there's two things I'm a bit concerned about, first is there seems a fair bit of play with the focus ring it's quiet wobbly and if you shake the lens you can here it rattle a little but it doesn't seem the effect the image quality.
Sometimes at 16mm the Auto focus wouldn't lock onto the subject, I over come this buy zooming in a little until focus locked then i had to zoom back out.
Is this typical of this lens.

constant 2.8

Just be careful with getting a zoom lens in the 18-55mm range at f2.8.
I have a Tamaron 17-50mm constant f2.8 and I think it's very soft and blurry at f2.8 but very sharp at f5.6 and above, it might be a faulty lens but if you do decide on getting a zoom lens at least try it out first before you buy and try taking a few photos at f2.8 and see if it's not too soft for you.

I just phoned EBay and the guy has opened up a dispute case through Paypal apparently the buyer is protected for 45 days there abouts after purchasing an item. He said I'm entitled to a refund and wants me to fill out the clain form and they will take the matter up for me.
I just don't like the idea of me having to do the running around to get the lens fixed.
Just saw a Pentax 16-45mm lens for sale I might grab that, it can't be any worse than the Tamaron.

I just got an e-mail from the dealer in Hong Kong he wanted to know how much would it cost to get a Tamaron Agent here to adjust the focus on the lens. So I phoned the service center in Australia which handles Tamaron Optics, he said if it was to do a realignment of the internal lenses or something to that effect, it would cost $110.
He also added they have the right gear to do such an adjustment, they purchased it from Tamaron.
I think I wouldn't mind sending it away to get checked out thoroughly for optical alignment , as there is no gaurantee if I get another one that that will be any better.

Thanks, did you end up getting another Tamaron 17-50mm lens? I noticed that my serial number is 020536 I wonder is that old stock.
Just going to get back to the EBay dealer and ask for a refund as they state they have a 7 day refund policy.

Thanks about your tip about the newspaper, you can really see it. Top photo is f2.8 bottom one is f8, I had trouble holding camera square on to the paper so the top of f2.8 would have been worse. I must tape a page to the wall when the seller wants more proof of OOF.

I have a Tamaron 17-50mm f 2.8 lens, it is giving me a bit of grief.
At f 5.6 and above the lens produces a good sharp photo but below f4 the picture on the left side is very blurry and out of focus, I know I should expect a bit of softness at f2.8 but not this much and at f4 the picture quality should be better. Here's an example look at the little tree left side.

I have found with my lens that this happens at 17mm focal length and if I shoot at f4 and below, between f8-f11 the thing is razor sharp. I'm happy it's not a problem with the camera, I can overcome this problem if I remember not to use aperture below f5.6 or use a higher ISO say 200-400. I can now see why people buy Prime lens's which will my next investment.

I just sent you a message with my e-mail address.I hope this blurring is just the lens and not the camera, how are your other lens do you notice any problems. I took two photos of my garden side by side I was going to make a pano , when I looked at the photos the 1st one is very blurry but the 2nd photo which was taken same place just a little more to the right is pretty sharp except the left side.I just don't know whats going on its quiet radom when it happens. Before I use up all my free posts I will enclose two more photos outlining the bad focus area, gee my Nikon D300's and it;s 16-85 lens looks like my camera of choice from now on, look out Gumtree someone might get a cheap Pentax. Here's two photos.

It's funny you should say that about the corners being pretty bad, I have noticed at 17.01 (mine doesn't go to 17mm either) the right side has bad blurring just along the edge in some photos, I thought I must have been imagining it. The 18-55 WR Pentax kit lens had it on the right side really bad I got a refund as the dealer could see it too.
Anyhow heres one photo I am pleased with no blurring, I used Vibrant mode with +2 Contrast and Sharpness and -1 Saturation.
PS. Just looking at my photo I posted and it looks quiet fuzzy compared to the ones above, don't know what I'm doing wrong

Help with skin tones needed

Thanks guys it seems I'm not alone with my findings, I will try that plugin it seems promising. It's funny but certain peoples faces seem to display a reddish hue others not, my mate is a shocker everytime I take a photo of him I have to really tone the colour down or his face will be really red.
I posted photos here of before and after photos K5 Skin Tones: Pentax SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review
I can understand Pentax wanting Vibrant colourful photos, I do too sometimes but you would think the Portrait setting in the camera would be a lot better than it is. I will have to shoot RAW all the time now and edit in ACR or Lightroom especially when doing wedding as it's where you need correct skin tones. I might keep using my Nikon D300s for crucial things like portraits and weddings and the K5 for Landscape photography.
I do have a Dell IPS calibrated monitor a U2412, it has saved a lot of guess work when editing.
One thing I have found the K5 does a much better job with AWB than Nikon at least now green grass looks green not yellowish warm colour.

Help with skin tones needed

Coming from a Nikon D300's to the Pentax K5 I have been struggling a bit with what picure control setting to use.I have found the colours are far more vivid than the Nikon and changing to different modes don't really alter much. For most shots I use Vibrant -1 colour +2 Contrast and Sharpness. For shooting people and to get skin tones right I thought I would use Portrait mode but found this far too over-saturated and on some skin types shows a reddish hue. So I put my RAW photo in Pentax PCU4 I had to nearly turn the colour down to 0 to tone down the skin tones to acceptable levels. Could someone be kind enough what method they use when they edit for good skin colour.

Hi Ken I also had the kit lens I wasn't happy with mine due to softness at 18mm, all my photos were quiet blurry on the right side. I got a refund on the lens and bought a Tamaron 17-50mm f2.8 lens after reading about it on this forum, I couldn't be happier photos are nice and sharp. I have also a Nikon D300s with the Nikon 16-85mm lens, this lens retails over $800 and the Tamaron photos look just as sharp as the Nikon lens, I paid $400 for my Tamaron.

I have a Nikon D300's camera and a SB 600 Flash, can the flash be used on my K5 without causing any damage. I know I will have to use the flash in manual mode but if it will work it will save me buying another flash unit for the Pentax

Thanks, I actually used a Topaz plugin in CS5 called Detail. I might have added too much detail as the original photo is a bit smoother. Yes that's a bumble bee I'm not sure if you have them in Adelaide yet they arrived here from NZ about 10 years ago some are big mothers but they are harmless.

I bought mine 3 weeks ago for $1049 with the Kit lens 18-55mm WR but there was a fault with the lens it had to go back, today finally my new lens arrived a Tamaron 17-50mm f2.8, wow my photos are so sharp and the image quality is great. I have been wanting a smaller camera to replace the Nikon D300s but when I had trouble with the first lens I was a bit put off Pentax but with the new lens I'm in love again with the K5.Here's my 1st photo with the K5
