Just make one of those ten a compact wide-angle D-FA prime - something like the FF equivalent of the DA 15mm Ltd, so in the 18-24mm range - and I'll be perfectly happy. I don't ask for much! :D

OMG I absolutely have to laugh about a camera company promoting itself with a photo having such prominent chromatic aberration, especially because it could be fixed so easily in this case!

I laugh so I don't cry.

Sigma EX DG 24-60mm f2.8 - Too fuzzy, is it me?

My 24-60 EX DG used to give me really inconsistent focus results on my K-5, back in the day. It was very frustrating to use. It got a lot better on a K-3 II, and it's better still on my current K-1 II.

My takeaway was that it simply wasn't a great match for the older K-5 autofocus system, for whatever reason. If you can get good focus it is a good and sharp and contrasty lens, provided you keep it away from any kind of incident sunlight - the flare is remarkable and impressive in its own right.

If these are actually photos and not photorealistic renders (and I tend to think they are photos, mostly because of the awkward masking around the bottom) then this model honestly looks pretty production-ready. Maybe there's firmware yet to work out, but it sure looks complete otherwise.

One I haven't seen posted yet:

I have my U1 set to "normal camera" mode (I call it "family mode") -- P exposure, -2/3 EV comp, AF-S Auto-33 focus (using half shutter button press). If I need to hand the camera off to someone to take a picture, I set it to U1 and let them fire away.

K-1 upgrade delay

Kingman, I appreciate your positive attitude about this!

I submitted my upgrade request about the same time you did (9/24 or 9/25) and sent the camera in. I held on, hoping it would be back for the holidays, and sure enough it came back the beginning of this week. So I guess it's a trade-off -- those who left their cameras with Precision finally got it done but didn't have their cameras for three months, and those who waited are waiting still but at least still have their K-1s. I sure hope they finish the entire project soon!

(I can totally understand that they underestimated demand and had to wait for back-ordered parts to arrive in December. But apparently there are still more parts to wait for? That part I don't get. Are these replacement logic boards meticulously handcrafted by circuit artisans who can't be rushed?)

Sensor cleaning - what do you use?
Posted By Quicksand

Oh, the one time I tried wet cleaning (I think this was on my K-5) it was a disaster. It just moved the sticky objects around and left streaks all over the sensor cover, even using the special Eclipse-type alcohol solution. Ugh.

So now on my K-1 it's basically:
1) use the camera ultrasonic method, a few times in a row if necessary;

2) rocket blower (but not usually with much precision - just turn the camera upside down and blast away);

2.5) I will admit to occasionally having used some of those cans of gas - they're OK if you keep them upright and don't let them spray liquid.

3) an Arctic Butterfly-type soft static cleaning brush; then

4) the O-ICK1 lollipop. Oh, how I love that name.
I haven't had to do any wet cleanings with that regimen.

Oh, I omitted a step: 0.5) curse at all the diffuse blobs in Lightroom and having to remove them on every single shot where there's low enough contrast to notice. (Lightroom makes this fairly easy, until you find that one of them straddles an object with interesting detail.)

Well, we're back to a "no ETA at all" situation - the rep I spoke to on the phone this morning was very nice and courteous, but she said the Ricoh rep she spoke to recently was not able to provide any information at all. Typical.

I asked for my camera back, and she volunteered to check out whether I could hold my place in line or if I would be dumped back at the end. Either way, I said, as long as I eventually get the upgrade I'll be fine.

This is a really dumb and entirely self-created fiasco.

Because she was nice I didn't want to get into the "but why haven't you contacted us about this" complaint. Another time, maybe only after I get my upgraded camera back!

Sounds like some explanation is in order.

I'm very irritated, bordering on angry. I'm still grudgingly tolerating the situation. (Sure, I could get them to send the camera back, but I haven't done that.) Maybe you need to understand my personality to get that "very irritated" doesn't mean I'm prone to lashing out ... it's an internal condition. I'm irritated. Annoyed. I'm not about to set my equipment on fire or change systems or start calling out pro-Pentax people on this forum. I'm one of them!

Fact 1: This upgrade offer was presented, and the deadline was September 30.

Fact 2: I thought a long time about going ahead with it, and decided on September 24 to do so. A week before the deadline. I filled out the online form, got my confirmation email, and followed the email exactly, to the letter.

Fact 3: I didn't look at this forum thread, which (I now see) began after I sent my camera in. In any case, why should I search an enthusiast's forum to determine the terms of a commercial arrangement I'm entering into?

Fact 4: It has been more than six weeks since I sent the camera in. I haven't heard a darn thing. No ETA, no apology, no explanation. In my view, this is not acceptable.

I'm feeling disrespected as a customer, and rightly so.

That's all!

My level of irritation is really high right now; I think the highest since I started with Pentax in 2008 (and believe me, there have been reasons for irritation before). Not gonna bash though. Not yet.

I submitted my request on September 24 and received an email, and the pertinent part looks like this:
Your request for service has been received. To avoid any delay please be sure you have checked the following items.
  • Please wrap the receipt page around your product with an elastic band

  • For units under a manufacturer's warranty, you MUST include a copy of the original proof of purchase receipt to validate your warranty claim

  • Verify that all information supplied below is accurate and complete

  • Only include accessories that pertain to the problem you are experiencing

Shipping Information:

U.S. Customers ship your repair to: PCVR, 7 Anngina Drive, Enfield, CT 06082

Canadian Customers: Please refer to page 2 of your receipt for shipping instructions.

So naturally, I sent in the camera. I did all those things on the list and somehow wasn't able to "avoid delay." There's absolutely nothing in this email about "hold onto your camera until we're ready," and unfortunately I hadn't checked this thread.

I've now been without it for a month and half, and I'm looking at ANOTHER month and a half, if not longer? Likely all the way through the US holiday season? C'mon Precision and Ricoh, have at least a minimal level of respect for your customers.

Send us an email. Let us know what's going on. Since that order confirmation I -- like everyone else -- have received absolutely nothing.

Since as far back as Bluetooth 3.0, there has been an "HS" high-speed mode that allows low-power Bluetooth connections to leverage an 802.11 (WiFi) radio for high speed data transmission. This would be a good model for camera tethering in my opinion -- use a variant of BT for camera control (and preserve better battery life) and fire up ad-hoc point-to-point HS transfers using the WiFi radio only when needed.

I don't know if many devices actually implement this, but Apple's "AirDrop" does something very similar -- Bluetooth to set up a direct link, then WiFi for the payload. In my experience it's very fast between a MacBook and an iPhone.

K-1 mark 2 FAQ posted

Nah, a "5 axis" SR system still has only three axes of movement at the imaging sensor level -- up-down shift, left-right shift, and in-plane rotation. The other two axes are employed in the accelerometer and processing algorithm only -- up-down shift vs. up-down tilt (pitch), left-right shift vs. left-right tilt (yaw), and rotation (roll).

Having these five axes at the accelerometer/processor stage improves SR performance because required sensor shift for a shift-like movement of the camera is dependent on the distance to the subject, whereas required sensor shift for a tilt movement of the camera is not. Using both together will work better for macro and close-up shots in particular, where blur is particularly influenced by shifting movements.

Having the imaging sensor move out of its plane in the Z axis won't improve SR performance at all. It will just mess with focus.

As you look at that Olympus video linked in your post, carefully observe the reflections from the sensor. The reflections don't move at all, so the sensor isn't tilting.

As have I! I'd love, for example, a 19mm f/2.6 (hey, it's Pentax so it's gotta be weird) D-FA Limited prime. I'd be all over that like cheese on a pizza.

And if they can get new coatings, weather seals, and a focus motor into small metal lenses that resemble the old FA limiteds, I'm sure it won't totally obliterate their character -- if they do it right. I'm one of the (possibly few?) people who enjoys and prefers working with a lens's idiosyncracies and visible characteristics, rather than around them.

Actually, there can't be too few of us since LensBaby is still around. :D

If Precision were smart (or any of the worldwide service centers for that matter, but especially Precision) they'd take orders, put them into a first-in-first-out queue with each camera having a set service date, then have people send in their cameras a week before the service date. This is a largely repetitive operation so they should be able to figure out how long each board replacement will take, on average, with not too much deviation. If things turn out to go a little faster or slower, they can send update emails advising the customer of a different service date and date to send the camera in.

But hey, I'm not in the camera service business, so good luck everyone! (Myself included.)

Basically the same here. I have had a K20d, a K-5, a K-01 (LOL), and a K-3 II. The K-1 is the first model where I haven't felt held back by one weird quirk or another. (Though the K-3 II was thiiiis close.)

Sure, it could be better in some ways (and I do have a running list of wants -- better top LCD, brighter VF focus point indicators, better predictive AF, less squishy shutter button, etc.), but the K-1 is 100% good enough for me.

If there's a Mark II coming soon, I don't expect to need it!
