Works well for me, so much simpler than the Image Transmitter way, though without the bells and whistles of camera control.

I was told the reason the 25mm is discontinued was the company who supplied the front element can't anymore, can't remember why. And yes I have one. Keeping that front element out of harms way, though in theory, living in the UK we have several years to get a refund or replacement under EU law as long as it's a manufacturing fault, not mine! But I have insurance for that eventuality.

Reporting back after another batch of tethered testing. I find the new firmware 1.21 for camera and 2.1 Image Transmitter software to be pretty stable so far. I find linking this with Lightroom works well. Given up on the Capture One workaround as unsatisfactory as the Lightroom way works so well, so far...

If you follow Alex Munoz's video guide you'd be amazed at what the images look like in C1. Apart from my magnification issue on some files it uses his technique to create camera profiles that it would be nice for C1 to provide themselves, but it is a workaround for those of us who already use C1. I didn't expect much so was surprised to get such initially good results. I'm not sure if I can incorporate it in my workflow yet as it has to be bulletproof. I shoot with two or three camera setups so it makes sense to use C1 for everything as my clients and assistants are more used to it than Lightroom. More testing next week.

Still tethering solidly but having odd problem with colour on some preview files in Capture One. Seems to be only on higher ISO files and only when viewing at 50% magnification or above. 33% fine, hit next magnify level, 50%. and colour and contrast goes off noticeably. Files view fine in Lightroom so not corrupt. Rebuilt previews and tried on different computer and both Mac OS 10.9 & 10.10. Sigh, will test some more next week.

My camera would freeze if stopped from Image Transmitter, and only a battery out reset would help.

I have reset the whole camera from the menu now New camera settings using all advice from these helpful forums: One card DNG raw setting, lens corrections OFF, left hand USB port on my MacBook pro (in theory they should both be usb3 though), mains adapter running computer. Computer on, camera connected by USB3, Image Transmitter on, camera on... Managed quite a few captures, no crashes. Turned off camera via Image Transmitter before turning camera off. So far so good, I'll try it some more before I'm won over. Thanks to Alex's "Capturefix" program I have a workaround until Phase One see the light!

Thanks a bunch for this Alex. I managed to copy this workflow and actually see my captures in C1. I have maybe tracked a couple of problems with tethering and now it seems to work better. It seems the camera likes to be set to record a DNG to only one card before tethering. Then with camera connected and Image Transmitter (IT) running, turn the camera on to deselect record to camera from IT leaving it to transmit the DNG to the selected destination/IN folder.

Not sure how to automatically assign the 645 icc profile when each image appears on C1 viewer but only a second to apply it manually.

I have a huge job coming up and I hope my assistants can adopt the new workflow.

I keep trying to get solid re-usable connection between my 645z and MacBook pro Retina, for serious daily use; but unless you are extremely vigilant, turn on/off everything in the right order etc the experience can only be described as flaky, laptop crashes, forced camera restarts. When compared with a professional solution such as Capture One I despair. I officially have given up tethering until Lightroom or anyone else comes up with a decent solution. In the real world frequent crashes in software or the camera are unacceptable and it's a pity Ricoh/Pentax don't put a little bit more money into developing decent software themselves or at least pay Capture One or Adobe to do it for them.

I'm forced to keep my old but reliable p30+ back and my Contax 645 for tethering but at least get to use the Pentax for all the other jobs when tethering isn't necessary.

I was an early adopter of Image Transmitter 2, that'll teach me!

I'm on C1 v8 now and there is no image at all, I seem to remember v7 showed an image but it was purple. The image transfer program shows a preview quicker but it not full screen or even close, and harder to check focus or details.

You won't be able to use any Pentax 645z dng straight out of camera in C1. You'll find colour unusable. You can covert pentax pef to Adobe dng and C1 will read it with a few processing reservations.
I measured my tethered 645z dng transfer via auto import to Lightroom at 7.4 secs to full preview image. By comparison my old Phase one p30+ transfers to C1 in 4.3 secs to full preview. In my interiors work this is not a radical speed problem. I still prefer the C1 experience, but hey ho...

Now I'm using it in anger with Lightroom on a new MacBook Pro and I'm getting full screen previews (on my second screen) in about 6-8 secs from pressing the button. Still not as lovely as Capture One, but it'll do. I'll do a proper timing tomorrow.

I managed to get transfers again by using the "reset" menu item on the camera. Just in case any of you have similar problems I'm guessing it was something to do with the USB connection getting flustered...

UPDATE:

Can't get any images to transfer today! I'm doing the same thing but nothing transfers and camera locks up, only battery reset gets camera back in action? Ah well back to the drawing board, this software or something has changed...
Message on Image Transmitter Software is that the camera is processing, but nothing transfers?

Sorry, no K-3.
Although it does precisely what it says on the can, transmit pictures, it is in no way competition for Capture One, unfortunately. It is more a remote control for a tethered camera and a way of getting images straight into a computer.
I hope my new Macbook Pro will help me to view the images faster when auto-importing to Lightroom. Time to try the other workflows, like converting to adobe dng from Pentax and viewing in Capture One. Next test for me this weekend with the new Mac...
All this does not take away from the reason I liked the camera in the first place which was to free me from the tether! A job it excels at. I was rather hoping it would do tether jobs as well, but never mind there's always an alternative.

You have a small zoom box in the live view window (this is not a separate window but contained in the main window) that you can move anywhere, it lets you zoom in to focus. I guess your live view window is around 700 pixels or 5 inches, 12.5 cm wide on my 1680 Pixel wide display. Pixels wide and it replaces the lv image on the LCD. It is enough to see focus and easy to compose, you can shoot straight from this screen whilst in live view if you like, you can control all the major camera controls and what format (jpg raw tiff etc) you are transferring.
If you really want to see an image preview larger you need to take a shot and view it in Lightroom or another way.
You can find an operation manual on the main ricoh site in Manuals download Asia (English) accessories section, it took a while to find it! http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/support/man-pdf/image_transmitter2_operation_en.pdf

Well I got a disk. Installed in my MacBook Pro 2011 and all works. Small preview window (can't be enlarged to fill frame even) but my intention is to use Lightroom auto import to view and process images, and this works fine if a little slowly. Hopefully new Laptop will help, next expense coming up.

They are showing some of the images on a laptop on Capture One software. I guess they are looking at jpegs as we have been told Capture One won't be tethering to Pentax as far as I know. If only this was true C1 tethering I would be over the moon!

I found this "fault" on my first outing and reported it on my earlier post. However all I now do is set all lenses to A on their aperture ring and use the camera body dial. This seems to be accurate with all my old and new lenses. It seems an odd thing though.

Some from 645z today in London. Some cropping and minimal post. Plus a 100% crop of a surprising detail...

To sum up most of your questions it feels like the camera will be fast enough to not cause complaints. You wouldn't get it for sports, but you might want to get that one sports shot that differs from all the 10 frame a second sprayers...But then that's the half the point of medium format.

I did use the rear screen, and in fact would say this is one of the most important points for me. A simple thing like a screen I can look down on is a blessing for a lot of low level tripod photography. The screen does mark fairly easily, or it could be I have a really greasy nose?

Battery life, good so far, again, it doesn't feel that this is an issue for complaint. DR is great, much better than the Canons, but of course that will mean more post production to get the best out of the flatter images.

I used a SanDisk SDSDXPA-064G-X46 64 GB Extreme Pro UHS-I SDHC Memory Card, to give it the full title. As a film user, cards seem cheap, so why not get the best, not worth any risks there.

Many thanks to the team at Park Cameras for my camera. Getting a lens from SRS and they seem great for service too.

I hasten to add it is not my intention to use the 645Z for street photography. I find that the hustle and bustle of using a camera in the street teaches me where to find all the controls in the least amount of time. It's my "training ground". The camera is capable of the photography but the size kind of negates the idea of candid. I was very surprised how quiet and smooth the mirror and shutter mech is. I can hand hold at unexpected low speeds 1/lens seems ok in many situations.
