I am still waiting for the detailed specs but here are a few comments regarding the design and ergonomics :
-The retro style is only half retro (this pop up flash does not look so vintage...) which makes it somehow weird in my eyes. But that's just a matter of taste I assume.
-Let's notice that the pop up flash is there, that's a good news.
-Ergonomics : the main deal breaker for me is the lack of top LCD screen (or equivalent). When I shoot it is vital for me to know just at a glance the following : "ISO/Shutter/Aperture"+"Battery condition"+"Memory". And the LCD screen on top is vital for this. I would have preferred a bigger one on the K-1, but I have one with key info and thus it works for me. Alternatively the dials with a mark corresponding to the shutter speed like on the film cameras (K1000 for instance) are fine. But I need to know what's going on. I covered a classical music festival during the week end and turning on the main screen was not an option.
-Ergonomics: more dials is not the simplest way. I find the 2 dials efficient for what I do. Pressing the ISO button and turning a dial at the same time is easy enough.
-Battery life : reducing the size of the battery is a concern since more and more things need power (GPS, Wifi, image processing...). And since there is no small LCD on top, having to switch on the main screen will eat up some energy.
-Connection : no jack seems a step back for video, but I was not expecting anything like a video monster anyway

As a K-1/K-3 owner, I would like to actually see a K-3 replacement that would be the exact same size and layout as the K-1. I often use the K-3 as a back-up for the K-1 or as a second camera and ideally would like to have the same layout and everything on both to be more efficient. Overall what I expect from a K-3 replacement regarding ergonomics is : build quality, K-1 organized layout, very durable battery life and dual SD slots, a screen on top.

Hi all !
I have just seen the new announcement of the Samyang 20mm f/1.8 for K-mount. It's a 13 elements in 12 groups system, with 2 aspherical lenses. It is supposed to weight 493g and the launch price seems to be 549 euros.
You can find more infos here : Samyang Optics, Lenses for Camera ? Cine ? CCTV ? Photo, Prime Lenses & Third party Lenses

You can try DxO Optics Pro.
Just for information, you can have the version 9 for free here (DxO & PROFIFOTO | DxO.com , they will send you an email with download link and the activation code). The interface is not as modern as OP10 and a few features are missing but it does the job quite well, have their very good denoising algorithm and the best is that you can have it completely free :) Hope this helps ;)

Flat lenses in the future?

Thank you for sharing this research publication :)
I don't want to kill the excitement around this technology, but it is monochromatic oriented : the thickness of the layer and the patterns are designed for a single wavelength. For microscopy applications, it is just fine as they often work with monochromatic lasers. However for a broad range of wavelengths (like visible) it would have a crazy amount of chromatism and would probably not be suitable.

Which lens for Macro pictures

This is a list of the lenses I can see possibly available for your budget (probably second hand).

>Pentax 35mm f/2.8 ltd
>Pentax 50mm f/2.8 (D FA)
>Sigma 50mm f/2.8
>Sigma 70mm f/2.8
>Tamron 90mm f/2.8
>Pentax 100mm f/2.8 (2 different versions, one weather resistant the other not)
>Sigma 105mm f/2.8

In this list I would say that you have 2 groups : 35 & 50mm that are in my opinion oriented for still subjects that you can picture as close as you want (and macro with a 35mm is really close) and the 70mm and above that are better to take pictures from a distance (insects for example). I do find it more convenient for lighting too as you don't introduce shadows by getting close to your subject. Last thing, the perspectives are different between a 35mm and a 100mm.

If you have a look at my 500px galery you can find some pictures with Pentax 35mm and 50mm macro (the oldest ones I guess) and most of them are with the Sigma 70 and 105mm. I have a personal preference for the 70mm from Sigma because it has something special in the image it delivers (maybe more contrasty than the 105mm) but the best advice I can give you is try to borrow some and test them yourself :)

I can help you with this as I do care too (but haven't the chance to get a K-1 yet, the Dublin camera store does not have it yet) :)
I had a discussion with some people from the labs about 3 weeks ago. According to what they told me then, they should not have their K1 at the moment (possibly in a few days). There is no precise date of release at the moment, but it seems that it may occur in September/October.
The K-1 is a bit of a nightmare for lens calibrations : as you can imagine they suddenly have to calibrate a hundred of lenses from scratch (I am including the FA series and the third party lenses...)
Hope this helps !

DA 40 Limted vs. 35mm Limited Macro - HELP!!

I tried the 35mm macro a year ago and made a review of it. In my opinion it is a great lens as long as you don't plan to use it for macro (because of its very wide field of view and too small focus distance). I had it on a running event and the AF was fast enough for press stuff but probably not the faster you can get. In terms of image quality, for portrait it is a very great and sharp lens, contrasty. Probably the sharpest 35mm I have tested so far (together with the 18-35mm zoom from sigma). If you want a sharp image go for this one, you won't be disapointed !

Seems like a winner in terms of low light performance ! (Test - Pentax K-1 : gestion du bruit électronique - Focus Numérique)
The K-1 is said to have a better image quality than the D810 at 6400 ISO, awesome :D

Hope that a 'small RAW' option will be available. Even at 36MPx that's more MPx that I really need for 99% of what I do...

I would choose optical viewfinder too ! With optical viewfinder, the full camera is like a part of my eye. With EVF, I feel like I am not 'in' the action, there is the screen between action and my eye. Anyway, that's subjective I guess :D

DXO will provide 2 new sigma lens modules for K mount

Hum interesting question : there is a lab testing the lenses and providing the data for both an integration team for support in DXO softwares and the DXOMark team.
The DXOMark team only scores the lenses that DXO buys or the lenses sent by the firms in order to have relevant and accurate scores.
The supported lenses on the other hand can be calibrated from any new or 'used' lens, because the aim is to have the widest lens database.
:)

Unveiling of the Full Frame Prototype

Agree with you, I think they will release only one full frame at first in order to compet with Canon 5D and Nikon D810. But in the long run, a fast FF with less pixels and more sensitivity in low light would be great. Something in the style of Canon 1DX and Nikon D4s. I believe that a good 12 or 16MPx sensor would be enough there ! But AF system will need huge improvements...

Upgrade from K-30 to K-3/K-S2 dilemma

Hi !
I started myself on a K200D (my father's one^^) and switched one year ago to K3. I can really recommand you this camera, it is amazing ! Better than D7100 for example. The price is really low now and it worth every buck you will pay for it ! So for me option 1 :)

Regarding lenses, I am afraid that the 18-135mm may be not enough for the K3 24Mpx sensor...
For the wide angle need, what about a 16mm f/2 from Samyang ? Of course it is manual focus (is it a real issue for such a wide angle ?) but it is affordable (about 350 euros new from digitphoto) and the sharpness is amazing..
