if the camera makers want people who have gotten used to the nice swiveling lcd screen on the current breed of high end compacts to be happy they are going to have to give the matter of being able to frame and compose the shot in the rear lcd screen some serious thought..

shake reduction and the ability to compose an image on the rear lcd even on a dslr will be needed soon.. "dslr cameras dont do that" wont work for much longer.. they will have to if they want to survive as a tool for the masses..

the price of lcd screens is dropping.. 22 inch wide now come are a good price.. 24 are still well over the top..

a 22 inch wide will seem huge compared to a 17 inch crt which only actually has a 16 inch diagonal viewing area.. the figure quoted for an lcd viewing area are true figures they never were for a crt..

22 inch is probably the current size to go for..

i wouldnt worry too much about quoted contrast ratios and such.. those figures can all be taken with a pinch of salt.. i wouldnt dig too deep into which is the "best" either.. he he he

carefull with the pirce thow cos its dropped so quickly some places havnt caught up..

Advice please: Have K10D - Pentax 50-200 + teleconverter or Sigma 70-300 APO DG?

legolas..

the shots i posted are with the sigma 70 x 300 apo dg or tamron 18 x 200 walk about lens..

i hope u detect the "sarcasm" in my earlier post.. i just get a little fed up with the knocking these two lenses get by people u have never used them and are simply passing on what they read..

trog

ps.. forget the tamron comment they are all sigma 70 x 300.. another time another post..:)

nice line of thought slipchuck.. but one thing i have always wondered is exactly how other people see colours.. how u present them might not be how others see them or in fact like to see them.. ???

too much food for thought i think.. :)

now they have a dslr they feel the need to take things futher.. i wonder why.. he he he

crt technology is dead.. now they are pretty much being given away.. soon they will be pretty much unobtainable.. the world moves on..

i used to believe the old crt image quality is better stuff.. i no longer do.. also a desktop lcd is way better than a laptop lcd..

trog

ps.. this kind of arguement belongs back in the film verses digital days.. :)

not exactly comparable to someone who at present is useing a 17 inch crt thow is it..

i wouldnt argue the quality of a thousand lbs worth of high quality crt monitors sat on your desk if u have the space.. can afford the electricity bill and really feel the need.. but for normal usage they pretty much belong in the ark along with noah..

how a film format full frame image fits on a widescreen lcd..

how a "compact" (FZ20) image fits for comarison..

i find it strange that people who spend lots of money on a dslr camera are still clunking along with things like 17 inch crt monitors..

and folks who pixel peep and make image quality comments whilst viewing their images on laptops puzzle me even more..

i have one 19 inch and one 17 inch crt monitor cluttering up my spare room and have just given another 19 inch one away..

trog

ps.. a widesceen lcd fits the older film format image ratio rather nicely when seen full screen.. a none widescreen fits the more square compact images better thow..

"work".. "job".. "professional".. keeping the required work down to a minium.. all relevant..

"fun".. taking pictures.. enjoying taking pictures.. shooting jpegs to avoid the need for "work" flowing or otherwise..

a professional needs a "workflow".. not being one i just move pictures from my camera to my PC and enjoy looking at them..

an alternative viewpoint from someone who simply likes taking pictures and feels at a slight loss as to what to do with them afterwards.. except get pleasure from the ones that have worked out and try and take better ones the next time..

they have to keep selling us new products one way or another.. Vista is a perfect example of a huge mega rich company selling (forceing the world to buy) us something we dont need simply to stay mega rich..

fortunately for the camera world the easy "more mega pixels is better" option seems to have reached its noisy conclusion so we might see some real improvements soon in the dlsr world.. compacts have reached a higher level than dslrs.. there is some room left i think for valid improvement..

very little of the techncal stuff i have bought over the last six years has worn out.. it all gets replaced because its "obsolete".. or at least u think it is.. :)

being a bit of a computer geek.. there is something i call a "sweet spot".. its definieley not leading edge.. leading edge is simply spending money just to be "leading edge"..

a year behind leading edge is probably a wise place to be.. u have "enough" techology and u get it at good price..

bragging rights play a huge part in all this.. the PC world is honest enough to admit this.. i dont suppose the photographic world is thow..

the graphics card in my current PC cost me £400 (750 US) about five months ago.. its bragging right factor is well used up.. he he

the very short bragging rights (three months max with a high end PC component) ) period was the expensive bit..

a camera isnt quite so bad but the same principle applies..

i see nothing with the image i wouldnt expect to see.. the lighter areas correctly exposed or nearly with the black slightly under exposed.. the camera has tried to average out the exposure between blacks and whites and made a reasonable job of doing it..

Question on Ist-D focus confirmation on 3rd party manual K lens
Posted By trog100

"Well, I'm glad to hear that from you, it helps preventing me from catching that awfully tempting LBA"

i caught it with my son.. between us we went thru a whole bunch of ebay specials.. its done me a favour really cos i certainly dont lust after the more expensive primes any more..

i think the standard (made by the million) 50mm and 28mm primes work okay whatever the make is.. but anything longer just didnt come up to expectations.. in short not as good as a cheap plastic tamron 70 x 300..

the cheaper plastic "rubbish" however exceeded expectations.. he he.. just not so nice to "fondle".. :) :)

for example a cheap sigma 28mm x 80mm zoom which can be bought for next to nothing with x4 filter on the end makes a rather nice 1:1 macro lens for a fraction of what a real f2.8.. 80mm one would cost.. the f2.8 being wasted on a macro lens because the dof just isnt there..

i have put it down to film grain hiding the lack of "sharpness" factor or the fact folks didnt pixel peep so much back in the "old" pre plastic days.. but just how soft some of the older (nicely made) lenses were did surprise me..

it could just be a "softness" factor.. with my k100 i find manual focus somewhat unpredicable anyway.. more so with a lens that isnt exactly super sharp.. the softer the lens the harder it all becomes.. longer focal length lenses causing the most problems..

in fact i am dissappointed with all my older (ebay) primes whatever the make.. anything other than a standard 50mm just dosnt seem to compare well with cheap modern zooms..

nice well made expensive looking prime lenses that just dont seem to have the image quality i expected from them.. i keep them because i like the "engineering".. i just like nicely made metal things..

however the image quality leaves a lot to be desired.. he he

perhaps pixel peeping wasnt so easily done in the "old" film days.. dunno..

Lens choice?

"I would avoid superzooms. They are all soft for much of their range, lack contrast and exhibit high distortion."

rubbish.. focal lengh for focal they cant compare with a prime but they are not aywhere near as bad as u make them out to be..

but having said that i would favour your tamron 70 x 300 and sigma 17 x 70 choice.. but having tried the sigma 28 x 300 i can say it works quite well as a single lens walk about.. more so on a pentax body with SR..

i have some sample images taken with one for reference..

trog

the 28 x 300 and the kit lens would certainly be a cheaper solution for reasonable range

interestingly $249 is less than it would cost me to buy a pentax 18 x 55 kits lens in the UK.. £129.99 is the cheapest online price.. £199 is what Jessops.. a major UK high-street chain have them on sale at..

something is wrong with the "world" of prices.. he he

a certain inexplicable and possibly unsustainable imbalance exists.. ???

its only hard to find the words because u dont want to openly admit there is anything wrong with the existing jpegs.. :)

what look do the current ones have ones "a good looking DSLR look".. he he

phil askey dosnt set standards he attempts to work within existing standards.. he simply compared the k10 jpegs with the competition and found them lacking..

he used the same standards with the k100 and he didnt find them lacking..

he also found the raw conversion done with the pentax software lacking..

its reasonable to assume the next iteration of the k10 wont give him the opportunity to say the same things again..

carpents..

"Heck, I'll be more scandalous - zooms stink. I'm serious."

wonderfull use of the "english" language.. and also a foolish statement..

"No, but we can all read each other. Capitalize your sentences."

a somewhat hypocritical demand in your case dont u think.. and whilst we all can read each other we dont have to read each other..

the attacks begin.. sooo predictable and always in groups.. one has a go then all the others join in.. make sure u have some back-up then attack.. he he he

is it really my writing stye u dont like.. ????

anyway dudes i aint gonna change my style.. i wont be intimidated easily.. so i would advise (request) u to give up the silly jibes..

trog

ps.. try and read a little tongue in cheek humour in what i say.. i become a little more tolerable that way..
