Calling 645Z owners - testing dark frame behaviour

Ed, I am going to try for the fun of it, ISO 3200 with a 2 minutes exposure at 27 degree C (in humid Singapore weather). Lets see what happens from there. Bc the initial photos I posted did not cause a dark frame.

As weird as it seems, mine doesn't trigger at 3200 at 30s at around 10 degrees C. So I am not sure why...

Hi Robert, thanks for the complements.

Reason I used an ISO for 400 is because often 100-200 would be too slow to catch movement of animals or shake of the transport does affect me holding the telephoto. Given the clean ISO ability of the 645Z, 800 would have very well possible. But I decided 400 was better to prevent over exposure and I could get the high shutter speed I wanted at F8 through to F13 easily (1/250 and above). Given the great DR, highlight control would have been well controlled or easily corrected with LR.

As for 6400, 12800 which I used for the milky way or after sunset I am very impressed. There is good control and sharpness at F4-F8 at low light. I would dare say the Z is better than most camera out there in the latest generation at the moment due to sensor size (which in turn better handles noise). I was surprised at the results versus the new generation of Nikons, etc.

645z sensor cleaning

I had done plenty with the 645z in Africa. I would go with mapping the dust positions first on the 645z. the most accurate being putting the cap on the lens and letting it take a 30s exposure at F22. When you got your positions, in a dust free environment, open the sensor and use a blower first. Thereafter, use the Pentax cleaning kit or else use the dust aid or eyelead (the one for the sony sensors). I would not advice wet cleaning unless you have a stubborn dust particle stuck to the sensor (which requires special wet cleaning kits) and you should be ok.

jwoowland. try to go 3200 with a 30s exposure on F4/F5.6. Do the settings adjustment in the one for high ISO and set those to off (from 100-6400). Weirdly mind didn't do a dark frame until I hit 12800. 6400 was a bit of a hit and miss. Mine doesn't kick it for 6400 at 30s at times. And my temperature was relatively cool (10-18 degrees C). So it might be a combination before dark frame kicks in.

To answer, like what itshimitis , it is dependant on your scene or luck. I haven't had it do dark frame subtraction until high ISOs. I apologise for the confusion initially.

---------- Post added 07-29-14 at 04:42 PM ----------

Initially what was asked was a comparison for 30s or greater. I did 30s and 1 minute.

Ed, I know it is two different things. But I experimented and realised had this observation. When I did long exposures at low ISOs, there didn't seem to be that dark frame subtraction. I have gone up to about 10 minutes at ISO 100 with nothing at all. However, when I tried that at higher ISOs, it would do with a long exposure.

Left it at ON and went back to the other function and played around with it. The one for high ISO and set those to off (from 100-3200). And at higher isos (even up to 1600), it did not appear to compensate with a dark frame. So I guess there must be some algorithm with the scene where the 645Z decide to fire a dark frame, maybe the ISO sensitivity plays a part as well.

Again, this dark frame firing could happen after a sequence of 2-3 long exposures where the camera needs to "cool down".

Should have been more specific. You can choose to select NR at certain ISO to be off. So I do mine from base ISO to 3200. I haven't had the issue where I have to wait. However, that said, sometimes when I shoot at 6400 or greater, the NR kicks in and you have to wait. Set it to AUTO and in the manual selection for NR reduction at various ISO, do your adjustments from there. Hope it helps. For long exposure, 100-1600 I don't have dark frame subtraction. My 30 min one seemed ok at base 100 and at ISO 200.

Haha, well I know now they are really careful. You can't just have a toliet break in the middle of a game park or national park. Some people do act stupidly in self drives. I've heard of the guy peaking out of the window and lions mauling his face.

hey there, i did specifically mention this. long exposures are fine at low ISO, there is no dark frame. You can set which ISO values you want noise reduction on. I disabled mine from 100-800.

Regarding real life use, I used the 645Z In Africa and I did discuss long exposure here. You can pretty much go up to 30 minutes with no issue for star trails, etc.

The reason why I went against the a 400 or 500 is that optically they are not as sharp wide open. Also if you are stuck with a 400, 500mm. That means I would have lost at least 40-50% of my coverage and composition would have been ruined. I find the 300mm just perfect for such a situation and I think it is the the focal length you should have with safaris to national parks. It's hard to say. Thats wide I prefer 300mm at least you get enough range. However, a 400-600mm would work for up close birds flying or animals at a distance.

Yikes. Sorry to hear. But I thought there were strict rules where one can't get out of the drive unless supervised?

happens to me as well on M mode.

question, does any experience with their A lens that aperture selection from the dial does not work on any of the modes and you have to turn it manually? is it supposed to be like that? happens on my 35A

Attachment 230778

Recently after my trip from Africa, when I returned back to Singapore, I noticed there was a black line across my viewfinder.

Thinking it was probably me scratching the focusing screen (which itself is vulnerable to scratches) , I swapped to another focusing screen but the line still appeared. I look at the mirror elements and there was no scratch or line across (it was dusty thats all). Cleaned it properly and still it was there.

In no way does this line affect the IQ of my images or anything. Heck I call it the permanent rule of thirds line now :P

I am not sure whether some moisture from my Victoria falls escapade could have gotten onto my pentaprism.

Sent an email to Ricoh JP for enquiry as well. Any guesses gentlemen?
