Best lens combo for birds?

Although not cheap, I shoot the sigma 500mm f/4.5. I got it used from adorama for about half the price of a new lens. compared to others lenses of similar speed and focal length it is pretty small and light (only about 8 pounds). I do use the 1.4 TC on occasion for really far subjects. If you can find one it is a really sweet lens.

I'll be in Virginia visiting the folks (They live on Chincoteague, so I was really excited when someone recommended Assageague). I live in Oklahoma and would love to attend some of it (When I can sneak away) if it is at the right time. Even if I can't attend, it sounds like you all will have a wonderful time.

What is in You're Bag...

Here's what I carry in my bag (Expidition 7):
  • K 20d

  • K 10d

  • battery grip

  • pentax 100mm f/2.8 macro

  • tokina 80-200 f/2.0 zoom

  • sigma 28-70 zoom

  • pentax 18-55 kit lens

  • ring flash

  • pentax 360 fgz flash

  • Kenko 2x teleconverter

  • Sigma 1.4x teleconverter

  • Kenko 25mm extension tube

  • various and sundry filters, cleaning cloths, memory cards etc.

Carry separate:
  • Sigma 500mm f/4.5 APO EX

  • 2 tripods

Leave at home:
  • Pentax *ist ds

  • Quantaray 70-300 zoom lens

  • Quantaray teleconverter

I'm thinking of adding the 50-135 da* lens what do you think? Or is it overkill? I have serious LBA and am trying to decide between the lens and studio lights.

Opinion appreciated
Steph

Hi,
I shot from the stands at the AKC Agility Championships this weekend. We weren't allowed on the field (Only the official photographers) nor were we allowed to use flash. To get good exposure I had to shoot at 1600-3200 with a 1/500 shutterspeed and F/2.8. I was using my Tokina 80-200 lens and I didn't have any problem following the dogs around the course and having the majority of my pics in perfect focus. I was shooting full manual with AF-C with the 11-pt AF. The only time it was out of focus was when it locked on the jump and not the dog.

Hope this helps

SR on tripod???

The long exposure factor makes sense. I generally leave it on because even if I'm using my tripod I'm usually panning or following birdies around. I feel better since I've heard from you. I could just imagine voiding my warranty because I forgot to turn the SR off.

Many thanks again.

SR on tripod???

Okay all, just got my K20d and was reading the manual. It says that the SR needs to be off when you use a tripod. It is very adamant about it. Will it damage my camera if I use it when I use my tripod. I have used it with my k10d on the tripod without any problems. Is there any difference with the K20?
I remember reading on some of the bird sites (Can*n shooter) the person said he used the lens SR when on tripod, and thought it was better. I know Pentax uses a different system but if there is any movement possible (wind etc) I would think you would want the SR on.

As always I thank you in advance for your knowledge and opinions.

Opinion Please Which camera to keep as backup

Hi all,
I ordered my K20d today and am now facing a small quandry. Do I keep my k10d or my *ist ds as my backup. I don't think I can really justify keeping all three since I haven't used my *ist since I got the k.

Even though the *ist ds has lower resolution I am considering keeping it for the simple reason that if for some reason my batteries die the ist can take AA batteries that are readily available.

I could probably get more if I sell my k10d and be able to invest in some of the new glass.

Your opinions are as always appreciated.

If it is the same problem I had about a year ago with my *istDS. Your anti-aliasing filter may have slipped (I did it to myself by trying to clean my sensor:eek:).
A quick send in to Pentax (I recommend spending the extra for rush service) and haven't had a problem since. Needless to say I don't touch that thing anymore.

Nikon D40X - I was shocked!

I am a dedicated k10D owner (wouldn't have anything else) but one of my freinds wanted a DSLR so we went shopping. She has rheumatoid arthritis and the weight of the D40X was a huge point in it's favor. She tried holding a K10 D and couldn't grip it for long. So I guess there is a use for these lighter cameras after all. she did buy the Nikon and seems very happy with it..
Although if mugged I wouldn't hesitate to whack someone with my k10D (it is insured, of course)... The Nikon would just probably break.

Thank you all for your help.... Maybe there is something to this 12 step program. The voices of reason and sainty will prevail and it will remain my fantasy lens (Only alot lighter in my dreams). I do have the 1.4X Sigma TC, but have a 2X Kenko may need to look into a change (Cheaper than the lens).
I do tend to carry my 500 in my backpack and my 80-200 tokina on my k10 attached at the shoulder straps. Add my aluminum tripod with the wimberley head and I haul about 45-50# of gear.... Probably enough.

Thank you all again for your help.
As always you are my sounding board.

Pentax 600mm f/4 vs Sigma 500mm f/4.5

Hi all,

Well the LBA urge is hitting again....
There is a 600mm f/4 on ebay, and depending on how high it goes I may bid on it. So here is my dilemma::confused:
  1. I already own the Sigma (which I'll keep for the reasons listed below)

  2. The pentax is HEAVY! (~15 lb)--Anyone work as a sherpa???

  3. The Pentax is has a larger apature and has a 4.1 degrees vs 5 degrees on my Sigma

  4. I don't know if it is faster focusing. (The sigma is fairly slow to acquire on moving images)

  5. I shoot mainly birds and wildlife so I'm not sure if the increased focal distance will matter that much, vs the weight.

  6. Is it THAT much sharper... don't get me wrong my Sigma is very sharp, but when I add Teleconverters it loses alot.

  7. The seller will offer no guarantee/return.

  8. This has been my DREAM lens for years, and it is now discontinued.:(

  9. It is already at $1750+ with 7 days to go (hopefully the reserve is around 3K)

  10. IT IS A PENTAX!!!

As always your advice and opinions are greatly appreciated.

I'm up in Claremore (near Tulsa) and picked up at Camera Gallery in Tulsa. As for my Sigma I love it!!!! It is probably one of the older ones, I bought it used from Adorama and it is one Sharp lens. Only problem is that I wish it would Acquire faster (especially in flight shots) sometimes better to manually acquire then flip the switch.

As for wagons meant to be fallen off of, I couldn't agree more... and I have the road rash to prove it.

Happy shooting,
Steph

No this one was discontinued in 1996 and has an original price tag of $399.95. Its main purpose was as a portrait lens with a minimum focusing distance of .39m (a little over a foot) and a Max Maginification of 1:2. What I really like about it vs the Pentax is that it has a focus delimination switch that splits the focusing distance to either near or far about 1/2 through the range. This lens seems to acquire a very fast AF. I haven't had a chance to put it through its paces but will let you know when I do. :D

Went to the camera store to have an old photo restored. Of course I had to wander around... In the clearance case there was a Tamron 90mm f/2.5 AF lens.... For only $99.00 needless to say it came home with me. At this point should I mention that I just bought the Pentax 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens... Overkill I know... But a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.... Also known as I fell off the wagon (AGAIN!!!)

I broke the hotshoe on my sigma flash and they sent me a new one. Could you look at the bottom of yours and tell me how many pins you have. Mine only had 3 pins and 4 holes, is the middle one empty or should I send it in to sigma to have shoe replaced? I couldn't get sigma to answer my questions, all they kept saying was that they had to do it. It seems to work fine with the three in the corners and the center open but could I hurt my k10d if I don't have it right??

Thanks for looking,
Steph

Oh BTW it is the ef-500 super if that matters.
