Perhaps a fixed focal length lens would do the trick unless you have your heart set on a zoom! Super fast autofocus shouldn't be
a concern for landscape photography.

I see what you are referring to in the photos and they don't look good at all. I don't see anything that appears to be in sharp focus. How long have you had the lens? I would say there is some type of optical problem with the lens.

I used the AA rechargeable batteries all the time and never had an issue with running them dead. I like the adapter because in a pinch you could always grab some AA's and be back in business. Get and extra set and keep on hand and rotate using them.

Don't be fooled by the plastic build unless you plan on driving nails with your lenses. I always hear complaints about the plastic but yet they never mention that a lens was broken due to the plastic build? The plastic on the 35mm F/2.4 makes for a very light compact lens and the image quality is very good, more than worth the cheap price tag.

You are not going to get the type of distortion you refer to with a 50, 85, or 100/105 lens. If anything these lenses will beat your zoom as far as distortion is concerned.

Wrestling isn't really a high speed sport so i would say you could go lower on the shutter speed and keep the ISO as low as possible. I wouldn't bet on there being real good lighting either.

The DA* 55 F/1.4 gives you about the same field of view as the classic 85mm portrait lens on 35mm
which is what the lens was designed for.

I would keep an eye on the MPB.com. I have seen some 70-200 F/2.8 lenses in the past that are very close to your price range if you don't mind waiting til one shows up.

I have a cheap battery holder and never had a problem. it is cheaper to go with the battery holder and AA batteries, i prefer rechargeable AA batteries and i think they last longer than the pentax battery. This also gives you the option of picking up AA batteries if you ever run out of battery.

I like using the hyper focal distance to ensure focus manually. I would also use a tripod and the two second timer and get that ISO down to 200 for a cleaner image.

I believe it is true but why does it matter? As long as it performs at the pro level expected is all that matters.

There is something not right about your sample photos. Shot from a tripod but how did you release the shutter? Was the tripod good and solid and did you use the 2 second timer to release the shutter or use a remote? If you used a remote and didn't use the timer then the shake reduction should be turned off, using the 2 second timer will turn off the shake reduction. I would adjust for focus first at 200 mm since this is where your most shallow depth of field would be and where you would be using it most often. Upgrading the lens might help with focus and detail but won't do anything to improve the noise.

I would like to see these pics in a larger size, i would expect better results than what i can see here. What focus mode are you using? Have you checked and adjusted for any front/back focus issues? There are no illusions here, shooting high school sports under the lights is a challenge for sure and there is no magic lens that will change that. I would rather have a noisy focused photo rather than a cleaner out of focus photo, try stopping down the aperture to get an increase in the depth of field. You may find the new DFA 70-200 to be just what you needed, then again you might just find that your technique is where the largest improvement can be made?

I like the Tav suggestion as this is what i do and let the camera choose the ISO but i don't like the high speed continuous shooting. Going through hundreds of photos to find the good ones can be a time consuming task, I prefer to shoot single pics and focus on getting a high percentage of good ones. Takes the fun out of taking photos if it starts to seem more like work, at least for me anyway. One single shot> FB_IMG9553 by bschriver11, on Flickr

It's a nice day for a wet wedding, it's a nice day to start again. Like the song by Billy Idol.

I posted this because Pentax isn't any good for sports since the focus is too slow!

Bought a Wasabi battery and it didn't last even half as long as the Pentax battery, then it started to swell and almost became stuck in my camera. I will gladly pay for a Pentax battery that won't ruin my camera!

Unless you are photographing things that are moving a tripod seems to be the best answer.

Fill flash seems like the obvious choice for the best results. Expose for the background and use the flash to fill in the dark areas.

The reason your shutter is not firing is most likely due to focus not being achieved. In the menu there is a setting for focus priority or shutter release priority, if set to the former then the shutter will not fire until the focus has locked onto something. I shoot baseball with a 300mm lens moving the camera quite a bit and i do very well with 1/800 second shutter speed. Not sure what lens you are using or how close the subject but a wide angle lens over a body of water will be difficult for any focus system if the subject is very small in the frame.
