The first batch of LV5s should be available directly from the manufacturer pretty soon. As with Gadget Infinity's previous releases this first batch won't be available from retailers. GI will monitor feedback from the 1st batch to make sure there aren't any niggles before making them available via other sellers.

@Class A - I quite like the solidity of the stepped tilt, all you have to do to get alignment spot on is move the receiver a few cm back and forth. I find this less fiddly than getting the angle spot on. As you've described its easy to convert them to stepless if thats what you prefer, that is a simple and easily reversed modification.
@Stormtech - Most users will have a pair of V5s in which case they'll already have a nice set of stands for the LV5s. I think the problem with including stands is that they wouldn't fit into the current box design. Both V5s and LV5s have 1/4" threaded sockets and coldshoe (aka hotshoe) mounts as well so attaching them to just about any photographic stand, tripod or bracket is easy.
Cactus are back from Chinese New Year on Monday so I expect the LV5s will be on sale very soon. I can't wait to get our first full shipment - I'm sure our customers will love them!

Thanks for the write up, I'll have my own one up shortly. I was under the impression Cactus intended to change the tilt mechanism slightly so that you would be able to set any angle, though the demo set they just sent me did not include this change. Being Chinese New Year I've not asked them about this yet but will do so on Monday.
Have you asked Cactus if this change will be implemented soon? I've been impressed as to how many other changes they have managed to incorporate in a very short time.

Yes, thats pretty much what I'm saying. There are times when f4 is not enough, and atm the only options are 3rd party. C*non and N*kons 70-200 2.8s are both huge sellers...

I have had excellent experience with Cactus V4s, they are nothing like the old V2. Built in antenna, great range and very reliable.... in fact I now offer these to my customers.
Only probs we ever have is with the odd 5D mark I -- but those cameras would have issues (coloured stripes on photos) with any 433Mhz trigter...

I don't know much about the Alzo triggers, but a set of Cactus V4s is also a good solution. They don't suffer from the misfire problems that ye olde V2 and clones like the PT04 and CRT30 did...

Image stabilization will always be handy, it allows you that steady shot without changing shutter speed, its allows shots to be taken in circumstances where you would normally need a tripod.
High ISO is also handy, but using it means you have a different set of shutter speed & aperture than you would get with a lower ISO and IS.
Therefore IS and ISO compliment each other, and allow shooting with a wider range of settings than either would alone.

There is nothing in Pentax's range in the equivalent of a 70-200 2.8, I find the extra reach very handy. 50-135 just isn't enough all too often...

I like the sound of that... and hope Pentax applies the same principle soon and releases a FF body. There is plenty of good glass around (Tamron, Sigma, old Pentax lenses) to keep users like me happy :)

Neither is appealing. I'd be much more interested in a 21mp full frame camera for $2000 or so - thats how much the Nikon 5D mark II will be once the initial stocks have sold...

Yes... I think we are seeing the limit of what is possible with the small sensors. A bigger but not full frame sensor makes no sense to me.
I would like to see a FF Pentax camera to make full use of my lenses, otherwise sooner or later I will have to defect to a 5D or similar... you simply can't beat the advantages of having a larger sensor that collects more light.

Tamron 17-50 2.8
You WILL miss a few shots if you can't go wider than 28... there is usually at least one cramped spot
However you can crop or zoom with your feet (step forward) to make up for not having 75mm...

Somehow I don't see either getting me to trade in my Bigma 50-500 , it is much sharper than the 170-500... and only a little heavier.

This will be common to pretty much any wide angle lens with 2 filters fitted. Once you have a polariser fitted you don't need the UV anymore. Its good practice to use filters one at a time even on longer lenses, otherwise there are too many glass surfaces to collect dirt, cause reflections etc.
Some ultrawides may need the thin filters - even if you are only using one filter at a time.

I love my Pentax gear, and use it for weddings, outdoor & studio portraits.
I started with a DS, have also had a K100D but currently have K10D twins ;-)

Even with jpeg there is a bit of adjustment available... I used the shadow/highlight funtion in CS3. Raw gives you more lattirude in these tricky situations...
