I attempted to post a user review and was prompted to introduce myself first.
I've been an avid Canon user for about 15 years now--though not exactly a fan-boy :)--and of course landed in the full-frame mirrorless realm about four years ago, where excellent image quality is pretty much automatic. While the "hand-holding" is great in this respect, it has completely absorbed the fun of working to get the shot, which is a big part of what attracted me to photography to begin with. When the K3-III monochrome was released, it instantly piqued my interest, for two reasons: I miss the old work-for-it SLR days--not to mention a real viewfinder--and I’ve always been fascinated by black and white photography. So I bought one. And here I am, doing a bit of research into the cool tools of the Pentax world. I hope to learn some stuff here.
Cheers!

Sorry to hear that your camera turned out so badly damaged :( It's surprising that it turned out to be not repairable at all...
Unfortunately, water damage can and does happen (there are several threads on the topic) and can be due to a wide range of factors ranging from manufacturing defects to bad luck to incorrect use. Regardless of brand, I'm not aware of any standard warranties that would cover water ingress, despite marketing that might otherwise imply the opposite.
That said, one easy hack is to pick up a third-party warranty. These often do cover accidental damage and may even include a full replacement rather than a repair. I'd recommend considering that as an option before you make the move.

I think that’s pretty poor. One of the things Pentax brag about is their “industry leading” weather sealing. When this fails on a newish camera, a flagship nonetheless, it is not a good look. I can understand them not replacing the camera as it is not still under warranty but a discount on a new replacement for a long time user would certainly be good advertising for them.
I can’t blame you for considering switching brands. Stuff like this does leave a bad taste in your mouth, to coin a phrase…

In my case I just got a call. The gear didn’t work in the fa 77. It was the right number of cogs but wrong spacing? They can remove it making it manual focus or I can keep looking. Since that gear worked for the fa 43 I suspect you will be fine.

For whatever reason some people have been told that the SMC versions of the fa and da limited lenses are not able to get parts from Pentax. So I posted the link to the eBay seller my repair team was working with. So far they had not been able to source the correct gear - I need to follow up. ---------- Post added 12-27-23 at 04:44 PM ----------
Look here - towards the end of the thread: SMC 43 limited "Parts no longer available" - PentaxForums.com
This had a happy ending. My FA 77 appears to be fixed also (I don't have it back yet) using a similar ebay source for the part.

My fa 77 was bought new and very lightly used… and broke one day unexpectedly.

Probably a cracked AF cog as others have said. This seems to be the main mechanical weak point on the Limited lenses. It should be cheap to fix - my DA 40mm cost about €50 to fix after suffering that problem.

It is at the bottom of this Pentax publicity picture. PF limits the size of pictures shown here, but you can see an enlargable and clearer version on my website.
In the "LX System" diagram I posted above, they seem to have fogotten the "Hot Shoe Grip" which was for that purpose. |

Although I shoot predominantly digital these days, if push came to shove I would choose the Pentax MX and M 40mm f2. 8, as my desert island combo. When all the film and chemicals have been exhausted I could still have fun firing the shutter and winding on.

The 70-210/4 is fairly similar and only slightly shorter. It offers faster focusing and feels lighter in the hand. Internal zooming makes the lens more balanced as well. I am not suggesting it’s better or worse, just that as an alternative it could work.

Strongly agree. I love this FOV on APS-C and imagine it's a wonderful fast wide on full frame too. I just got a FA*24 a few months ago and it's stunning.
