Abstract My camera and I have different vision!

Don't worry about not getting the shots at first. Mistakes happen all the time. Photography has been my hobby for the past 5 years and i still sometimes have to try 10 times to get the shot i want, if i get it indeed. Just keep shooting and enjoy what you're doing!

Concerning the first shot, if you want to tweak colors, make it more vibrant etc. (to have more control) you can try shooting raw and post processing the image.
About the second one, an aperture of, let's say, f/8, and a focus point on the piece of metal, as well as recomposing the frame so that the piece of metal was somewhere in the rule of thirds, i think would make the picture much nicer. (Or if you wanted to add depth, an aperture of maybe f/4 and a focus point on the metal)

Abstract Zoning Out!

I understand what you were going for, but as you can see, the focus is on your wife's shirt. I don't know if this is what you were going for, or because you defocused from the flame, the shirt came in focus.
Anyway, technically speaking i can't see something wrong with your photo except the soft focus, which is not my style. I'm not a pro photographer, just a hobbyist giving you my humble opinion, so i'd love to see someone with many years of experience giving you his thoughts. :)

Keep shooting

That is much nicer, due to the warmth of the colors that are produced by the candle light, adding to the overall emotion you were trying to capture. One thing i would change is that i would probably focus on the picture above the candle, because that's where the viewer's eyes go first. Did you shoot it hand-held?

Thank you all, you have been of great help. I'll try to shoot with something less distracting next time and i'll probably post it here so you can give me some feedback once again! :)

Wow this is so much better!!! The sphere is following the rule of thirds and the bokeh is still kind of nice! If i had to choose from the original at f/1.4 and this at f/2.0, i would definitely go with the second one.

You two need to stop arguing! It's no big deal, i took no offense so i see no point in carrying on the 'fight', sort of speak. Sparkle, i searched some nikon forums and i found a good one in which i subscribed, so thank you. However, i still enjoy this forum so i think i am going to stick to both!

Nature To crop, or not?

I like this picture very much. It's great. My thoughts on improving it are a little bit saturation so that the photo becomes more 'alive' and if you want to crop it, place a 'rule of tirds' grid over it and allign the flower. That's what i would do. Try it and see how it looks.
Overall, a very nice and simple photo.

I get what you were trying to capture but it doesn't work for me. I'm not a big fan of defocusing the whole frame because your eyes need something to focus on. If you didn't want to intrude into your wife's privacy you could frame the shot so that only her hand, the candle and the picture was in the frame. That way you could show that she is praying without actually intruding. Give it another try, maybe play with the room lighting( shoot later in the evening so that the light is warmer/darker, or underexpose a bit) and post the result!

Ok, so i tried some sepia toning with the gradient map tool and this is what i think looks good. The wall pretty much stays the same, but the ladder changed to a nice warm sepia tone.

So, I added some contrast in the focus area and a bit to the out of focus area and i think it added a bit of depth to the photo. What do you think?

P.S the picture is not black and white.

Thank you, I appreciate your advice :) Could you explain what is a contrast bump? I assume it is done in the post-processing part, but i only know the basics and I have no idea how to add a contrast bump.

That's a very good shot actually. I love the colors and the nice bokeh. However, you could use a smaller aperture (for example f/2), so that the sphere and the metal wire holding it would be in perfect focus. I also think that the far left, out of focus, wire is a bit distracting. Overall, it's a very nice photo.
Keep shooting :)

I took this photo today, as i noticed how my shadow looked against a white wall, while setting up my camera for a city sunset photo. This is one of my first pictures of this kind and i would really appreciate any feedback and suggestions as to how it could be improved.
