Poll: Poll: are you a Pentax film camera collector?

Yeah, I listened to loud music in my youth and am told I still do.... It just doesn't sound loud anymore (evidently).

Part of it is spending almost 8 years on aircraft carriers. 3 of those years my rack was right below the #3 arresting wire. It got a bit noisy sometimes.

Well, I picked up the following for the kit:
K-x (Navy) with DA 18-55
DA 55-200
Remote (eBay)
macro tube
hand strap
Extreme SD card (30mb/s)

I have tripods.
I'll let her pick out a case for herself. I may steer her towards the Crumpler for one.

Thanks guys for all the input.. Too bad these lenses won't work with my ME F.

Thanks guys... Obviously the Supers and ME Fs are very close to each other as far as operations, specs and abilities go.. you could say I'm stuck on them.. I do love my Super Programs though. A few of the cameras are getting to be in need of CLAs; the problem is choosing which to send in first.

Funny story though, I'd planned on sending in one of the ME Fs first because for some reason the little chirping stopped a while back. (The ME Fs have and audible when you are focused) So I'm playing with it the other night and find out the second one had stopped it's audibles too. My wife says "what are you doing? that thing's driving me nuts". I questioned that and she says "that infernal chirping". I can't hear it. I can't hear it on either one even when listening closely.. Go figure. Maybe I need a CLA.

I wouldn't say I'm a collector, but I know what I like:

4 ME Supers
1 ME Super SE
3 ME Fs
2 Super Programs
1 Program Plus
1 H1a

Rear door ME Super?

The ME, Super, MEF, Program Plus, Super Program all seem to work and of course IF I were replacing my door with another, I'd get a data back of either the ME Dial or the ME Digital types to fit the Super.

I shoot film except for "snapshots"; items for eBay and the forums, then it's my trusty 'ol Panasonic SuperDisk 1.3Mp
I did just buy my wife a K-x as she is graduating from the Lumix 7Mp to it. She shoots no film.

Film camera prices up?

I don't know about the rising prices, but I've found over the last few months that the number of cameras that I couldn't afford years ago. I came up with a mint Super for $12 from the local shop because it wasn't firing reliably. I know that I can send this in and get it CLA'd and have a great reliable camera for well under $100. When I purchased my original ME Super in 1981 it cost me $360.
I'm kinda enjoying this buying as like a well made watch these cameras just need a bit of maintenance and I find I enjoy the mechanics of the camera almost as much as I do the mechanics of photography.

Marc - Touche'. I was shooting some B&W this morning at dawn and was thinking about this very thing..
Dave - I really don't anticipate her getting into it that far, but I could be wrong. I was surprised at her request for a dSLR. I have an assortment of tripods though.

For similar reasons I also like the Navy Blue color.
Two very fine products. Hadn't seen either of them before. Thanks for the tip.

AF M lens? Pentax SMC AF 35-70mm F2.8 35-70/2.8

As above this lense has great reviews if you want the bulk that comes with it. It has 4 AAA batteries that load in that bulge below the lense and powers the AF motor. IF you look at the contacts on the camera (ME F) you will note that the contacts are on the opposite side of the lense from a current AF camera.

The ME F was the first mass produced TTL focus camera and was a commercial failure because it was ~$70 more than the Super, but the lense was ~699? The camera was a highly modified ME Super which has the same characteristics as the Super with the added Focus Assist electronics. This is the only lense that will AF with the ME F and will only AF with the ME F. If you use the ME F with other lenses including the M42s, you can switch on the AF assist and it will help you focus via 3 LEDs in the viewfinder. It also has a switchable tone for that.

BTW I'm looking for a lense. I have two ME Fs already. They still bring a hefty price which I haven't decided to pay..

Which camera to replace faulty ME Super ?

How about an SFXn (Aussie) or SF1n. It has a manual mode, motor film advance and bracketing. A very nice camera and you can pick them up reasonably. Plus they are auto focus also if you like that.
I would have suggested the MEF which is a little bit larger than the Super with a bit more advanced electronics for focus assist, but if you don't like the speed buttons on the Super, you won't like them on the ME F.

Just picked up what was supposed to be a working ME F, unfortunately the thing came with rusted/corroded batteries which affected the base (being aluminum). Finally hours later I got it all cleaned up to find out that none of the advanced features work. So now I have a ME F with only ME Super capabilities... Bummer. Even the 1.7/50mm won't infinity focus.

Thanks all.
I'll do some further research on the 55-300. The biggest issue is weight and size compared to the 50-200. Thanks for the DAL vs DA tip. I have a couple autofocus cameras that will hunt from time to time and the autoshift would be a nice feature.
I have looked into the remotes and at <$5, that's a great suggestion.
I've heard of LightRoom and will research also.. seems like cheating to me (we don't do that in film).
I looked into the battery tip. Hadn't expected $70 for a battery setup, but looks like it's worth it.

ALL my lenses are K bayonnet (Pentax), as are all but one of my SLRs. (7 Pentax, 1 Minolta 7000)

How about cases? Any of them stand out? I may let her pick one out herself.. the lady knows what she likes.. But there are a lot of cases out there.

Excellent. Thanks rtpguy. I'm under the impression (wrong?) that he K-x (to me the KX is a film camera) uses AA batteries? Does it have another option? As for the SD card, I'm looking at the Eye-Fi?
I'll look into the DAL vs DA. Thanks.

K-x starter kit

I've just purchased a beautiful navy blue K-x for my wife (who won't be getting the gift any too soon). It comes with just the kit lense (18-55). I shoot Pentax film only and we have a point and shoot Lumix that she currently uses, she'll be graduating to the K-x. Here's the question for you dSLR veterans;

What would you put in a kit for a dSLR? LCD protector? Lense cleaner for sure, what else?

I'm looking to pick up the 50-200 also and the AL looks to be a very good lense for the money. Is the metal vs plastic base a big deal? I would sway towards the metal base. (or is this a baseless argument?) ;)

So.. MysteryOnion. I have the same problem with one of my lenses. It's a Pentax-M 50/1.7.. Is this the screw you are referring to? If so, what exactly is the procedure?

Thanks in advance

Speaking of camera straps; what strap is used on the LX like the one above? Can it be used on other bodies, does it have the normal strap connectors on the body?

ME Super quirk

What I was trying to discern was whether you had put another roll through it and it had functioned smoothly through the complete roll...
The ME Super (I have 3) will have that silky smooth transport when working properly and of course as stated above; the film is moving normally. There are some times as MO states that the film will not be smooth causing you to question the mechanics of the camera. As you get used to it you'll be better able to judge. IF you do have some issues, I'd recommend NOT trashing a good clean example of a Super and have Eric go through it. They're getting harder to find these days, and $63 for a CLA is far cheaper than trying to find one that in that kind of shape which will have to have it done eventually anyway. I picked up my first ME Super in 1981. 30 years.. we all need a tune up now and again.

Although the Super Program (Program A) is an outstanding camera, you can usually find good clean bodies out there for under $100. The flash is a throw in, and the 50mm 1.4 Tak is worth about $60. The zoom being worth a touch less.

From what I've read, the 1.7 is a better lense for a DSLR. (this coming from a strictly film shooter)

You don't say whether it's working now or not? I haven't ever run across a roll labeled differently than it turns out to be, but it wouldn't be a far stretch to consider that mistakes happen. Is the second roll working? Does it feel the same as is should now?

Pentax-DA 50-200mm F4-5.6 ED

So.. I'm looking at a Pentax-DA 50-200mm F4-5.6 ED lense (not WR) for the camera that I'm going to pick up for my wife for Christmas. The body will be a K-r or K-x depending on the price when I purchase it.

The question I have is while I understand the PK lenses from my film bodies will work on the K-x/r bodies, will this (and other digital lenses) be backwards compatable to my M and A film bodies?
