Theyīre pretty good! You also got a few lakes in your area, which could make some good locations for shooting waterscapes and sky pictures.

Iīd have to drive two hours to get into open land, so I canīt do landscape as often as I wish too.

Will this mean even less third party lenses for Pentax?

Iīve used third-party glass and cheap entry level lenses for many years now, because I was afraid to "sink" so much money into glass (I thought, I use a raw developer and retouch the images anyway), The cheap glass helped me to get started and to be able to explore some fields of photography, in which I couldnīt afford the Pentax lenses (like birding / wildlife).

Itīs nearly 10 years since Iīve bought my 1st DSLR (K-5) and Iīve damaged only one lens (DA 50mm 1.8 was dropped and a part of the filter ring clipped away, but it still works) and one filter, so Iīve recently bought the D FA 28-105mm for the K-1 (I always had the feeling that the old glass couldnīt support the possibilities of the camera very well) and itīs much more comfortable and easy to use, plus the image quality is much better (probably because of the coating).

Iīm still using old glass on the K-1 sometimes, because it has a certain charme (and I canīt afford the new alternatives yet :)), but I donīt mind having only new Ricoh/Pentax glass in the future, instead of third party lenses, when itīs more reliable, has better build quality and is wotrh itīs price (like the D FA 28-105) even if that means that I can only buy a lens like the D FA 50 mm or the FA 77 limited every two years.

As it seems, the K-New will be priced in an area where you could easily get a KP, some spare batteries (or the battery grip), a high quality SD card and a good lens for, if I wanted to upgrade my K-5 with a flip screen model, then this would be my way to go.

Another traditional brand down. :( I like the look of the cameras.

I hope that the MFT system survives. Itīs pretty good for birding when you donīt want to or canīt carry a lot. I can buy a leica 100 -400 mm plus camera for less than the price of a D-FA 150-450mm lens and still got less weight to carry.

DFA 85mm f/1.4 Now on Ricoh's Website

Actually I was shocked a bit when I read about the price first, I expected something around 1.500 Euro (maybe it will settle there after a while),

After thinking over it a bit and considering how I could pay off my K-1, how much longer I use lenses compared to cameras and where Iīve been 10 years ago equipment wise, it might be a good aim to save for if you really want it.

Lens suggestions for bird photography

Iīm a bit in the same situation. Iīve tried the Sigma 70-300 on the K-1 cropped and itīs kind of ok, but nothing to get really close. Currently Iīm using a Carl Zeiss Jena 300mm f4. .Itīs good for birds in the city, but for wildlife itīs too short I guess (still testing it, so Iīve not made my final opinion about it yet). CAīs and fringing in the example images for the Carl Zeiss removed and the images are also a bit sharpened. I was about 4 to 6m away from the birds, so I didnīt need to crop to APS-C on the K-1.

I agree with those who suggest a range of about 500 to 600mm. But after my experience with the Carl Zeiss, I tend towards a MFT system (probably Panasonic) for birding, because of the size and price in FF (would still use it for other tasks).

I know that a MFT Kit will probably only give good results on sunny days, but I just canīt afford or transport a DA 560mm or DFA 150-450mm.

I found it funny. However there are typos already in the name and I dont know if thereīs such a large market for shots of sheep. :o

To give some (hopefully) constructive comment: Have you thought about starting as an employed photographer? Itīs often stressful, you canīt always put in a lot of personal style and the payment isnīt that large (well actually itīs on the low end of the scale, as it is an easily accessable skill), but you can do what you love and you can see if you can do it all the day for a longer period of time. Product photography, digitalizing and 3D scanning for a museum or maybe working for a chain of portrait studios in a mall or an a cruise ship could be options.

Starting as an assistant for somebody already in business could be a great opportunity too.

How is this lens performing on the K-1 (Sigma 70-300 DG OS )

Is it a lens that is up to the K-1s image quality, sharp from the center to the corners and fit for professional use? No, not at all.

Can you use it as a lens in APS-C mode for some sports and photographing animals in good weather to get some decent images for hobby usage? Sure. I own that lens and I use it for this purpose
The sharphness in center is good up to 200mm and ok at 300mm, towards the corners it becomes softer the more you zoom. colors are very neutral and contrasts are a bit flat. It helps to stop it down to f8 or f11, so image quality frequently depends on the weather. Got it for about 165 € and for that price itīs great. Itīs also ok for portraits up to 200mm in FullFrame mode, not outstanding but not ugly either, as long as you keep your subject in the center. A good carry around lens when a compromise in image quality is ok for you.

I seldom use it in FullFrame mode, for birdwatching I wish for something around 400 to 600 mm.
Wouldnīt buy it for 300 € though, but rather save some more money and go for a used Sigma 170-500 (newer version) or 50-500mm.

What made you decide to purchase the K-1 over the KP?

I have a K-5 and had a K-50. I thought about getting first the KS-2, then the K-70 or later the KP, but I didnīt buy any of those and went for the K-1 instead, because of the dual SD-Card slots, the bigger battery (same as in the K-5), the larger grip and better balance with bigger lenses. I really like my K-5, but a follow up for the K-3 wasnīt there then, and the K-3 didnīt seem up to date anymore when I had the money for a new camera (I get a new camera about every 5 years, but 1 or 2 new lenses each year).

K-1 With Tamron 28-75 f2.8 Anyone?

I bought that one and the 70-200mm 2.8 for my K-5 to got some basics in case I can buy a full frame camera. It was good on the K-5 which only used itīs middle part, but itīs an average lens on the K-1. Itīs a good lens from 50mm onwards and usable for portraits, but for landscape I prefer an old manual Tokina 24 mm over it, because the edges on the tamron are far from sharp and the contrast isnīt very good either.

Tamron 28-75 at 28mm:

http://fav.me/dcberhe

Tokina 24mm :

http://fav.me/ddlczla

Both images are heavily postworked, but at the first image it was an "just try to make something out of it" approach, while the second was "itīs already good, but could still be a bit better".

Iīm really thinking about getting the Pentax DFA 28mm-105mm, because it has the reputation of being very sharp and having rich contrast. Also the weather sealing and greater range are advantages.

I donīt know the standards you want to achieve, but mine are glossy prints, magazines, online media agencies and professional press. And I need equipment that delivers this kind of relieability - if possible from Pentax. We pay a huge difference in Equipment prices compared to smartphone users and this should pay off in more relieable technology.

I got no issues with Pentax AF below the 50mm range, but everything above and especially over 200mm is more or less unpredictable (you think itīs ok, you zoom in and - damn). Ok, I havenīt calibrated the AF for every lens yet, so this isnīt my final word on it.

Why persist in using legacy manual lenses

@lakeshore: I put the AF to M, still get the confirmation beep and feel safer regarding the in-camera af motor and choose the exposure metering according to subject.

On digital, I approach the optimal settings I want to have by taking a few test shots or use the internal metering. On film I use the internal or if thatsīs not there an external light meter.

I got two manual lenses for my K-1: a 24mm Tokina F. 2.8 because a wide angle lens like this would be very costly if Iīd buy a new model (300 Euro at least for a wider but also manual Samyang) and

a 200mm f4 Jupiter 21m, because I like to test lenses with a reputation to have character (and I needed a more interesting range for my M42 film camera).

Iīm pleased with the results which can be seen here.

Hm, ok , I thought that more expensive Pentax lenses might be more spot on, because they have better QC and are better optimized for the Pentax cameras.

So I got a lot of adjustment and testing work myself to do then.

---------- Post added 25-08-19 at 15:22 ----------

I agree, itīs a wonderful lens. Yes, Iīm using single spot focussing over viewfinder (because focussing over Live View is very slow), sometimes I use middle spot focussing and reframe to speed things up (maybe not a good idea with such shallow DOF).

These are focussed on the ear instead of the eye (ISO 200, 100-140mm, 1/100 (hey we got shake reduction donīt we? ;) )

K1 Tamron 70-200-3 - inrvision's Sta.sh

K1 Tamron 70-200-2 - inrvision's Sta.sh

This one hit, but it was F 2.8 so I just got the lashes but not the iris.

K1 Tamron 70-200-4 - inrvision's Sta.sh

It could also be that just more training with that lens would help, because the slightest movements here can "ruin" the image.

That would be very sad. My only other preferred brand is Fuji.

(Itīs just an emotional thing, I donīt like the Sony designs.)

Hello Pentax community,

Iīm using Pentax cameras since I bought my K-5 seven years ago and I recently (two years ago) switched to a K-1.

Looking at my images after shootings, I got the feeling that the number of keepers (regarding sharpness) I got is pretty low, which is extremely frustrating, if there are some expenses (traveling, payment for location access, etc.) involved. Itīs between 10 and 50 %, and in some cases of portraitshootings it means that some images where everything else (pose, expression, light etc.) is very good the final image cannot be used because the focus point doesnīt fit.

Mostly it is a defocussation instead of a complete lack of focus, however sending in mostly cheap third party lenses together with the camera, to get them aligned seems a bit costly to me. I tried to use the in-camera option on the K-1 to correct back and front focussing, but still get a lot of defocussed images.

I never spent very much money on the lenses (because I couldnīt) and so my most expensive lens today costs 600 Euro and the others are far behind.
Having the K-1 now for a while, Iīd like to upgrade my lens park to a more reliable and more costly lens, but I donīt want to have much hazzle with it and I canīt do such a purchase every year, so I want to be sure to get a tool that can produce images of professional standard and is reliable.

Iīm also using vintage glass and Iīm not a newbie to lightroom and photoshop, so I know whatīs possible with post work image processing. But if the focus isnīt on the eyes thereīs not that much you can do. So fast and reliable autofocus would be a K-O argument for the new lens.

Iīm doing mostly scenery and portrait work and use lenses between 70 and 300 mm most frequently. Iīm searching for a fast focussing relieable lens in this range (prime or zoom doesnīt matter)
cheaper models are preferred, as the budget is an issue, but I put everything up to 2000 Euro into consideration.

Iīm not planning to buy the lens anytime soon, but I want to take a close look at the options available before I make such a big purchase.

My best lens regarding sharpness now is the Tamron 70-200mm F2.8 Di LD Macro

The best one regarding AF performance is the Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG OS

So what alternatives make sens in the price areas up to 500 Euro, 1000 Euro and 2000 Euro?

Thanks to everybody for reading and recommendations!

You can get an idea of the kind of work I do here.
