Inspired by the 20 year anniversary , I popped in the AA batteries, checked I had my Compactflash card reader for my computer and headed off with the SMC A 28mm f2 lens. I have mostly been using my *ist for macro work with the bellows and a ring flash as it can use TTL or PTTL modes, it was so nice to take it outside again, it still feels good in the hand and easy to use.

My *istD is still in working condition, but it now has a few hot pixels. Here is a shot I took with it about 17 years ago of my son. I have posted a screen shot to show that it is image 30 I took with this camera. If this was one of my film cameras it would have been on the first roll I took. My first film Pentax was an ME, my first DSLR was a DL. About a year later got an original D for its added features.

My relatively recently acquired *istD gets taken out for a walk occasionally when I feel the need to "go back to basics", with none of the distractions of a more modern body.
It's still a perfectly capable camera ... and with two e-dials, quite flexible :)
Herewith a piece of modern sculpture installed as the centre-piece in an ongoing new development.

To celebrate 20 years of the first digital SLR from Pentax, the *ist D, its great construction and image quality, and the symbolism of having been the first, nothing better than starting a club where everyone can post their photos made with this icon of the world photography.
I have no idea how many *ist D are still up and running in the world, but I invite everyone to post photos made exclusively by *ist D, current or older photos, and tell the story of each, of that moment recorded to eternity.
Here are two of my latest photos made with the *ist D and the F50mm lens.

When "daylight" give way for pitch black darkness at about 2 in the afternoon, and a raging snowstorm is howling, I'm sure happy to have the new HD 100mm macro (on my trusted KP) to have fun with.

Happy holidays, and a splendid 2024, fellow Pentaxians. SKÅL!

That is certainly a very generous offer. I would suggest reaching out to Oly_850 with a private message, just in case he doesn't see the post. I had a K-5 with a non-functional flash that otherwise worked fine for many years (the hot shoe still worked).

Pentax has been a fantastic journey and I still enjoy Pentax for film or occasionally shooting with old k10d.

However, Pentax no longer fits the bill for everyday photography, particularly the bulky cameras, and the OVF are real dealbreakers for me. So not coming back till Pentax embraces mirrorless.

One thing I really love about this site is that you can generally share your photos, polished or straight from the camera, without concern about someone saying they look worse than what a 12 year old would take with a cheap point and shoot. It is a pretty open, accepting and friendly place with a great community and no shortage of interesting photos to look at. I think the "only share your best" mindset that dominates with more serious photographers (amateur or professional) on Instagram and other social media sites is intimidating to people that are picking up a full-featured camera for the first time, and I love that places like PF still exist on the internet where people can be comfortable sharing basically whatever they like. It is great seeing the photos people take as they begin their experience with photography, and I also find that on PF in particular, there are a lot of people who have been shooting for a long time and consistently make wonderful photos with minimal post processing or with only in-camera processing.

Maybe, like many of us, your eyes aren’t as good as they used to be. I have a cataract in one due removal next year: thankfully it’s not the eye sighting through the OVF. :(

True, but the best stopped being relevant for most photography sometime around 2015/'16. The average small format sensors are all very good relative to 35mm, and the high-end is approaching medium format.

All I want is to know that Ricoh won't throw the Pentax brand under the bus because I couldn't stand to live with another Minolta shaped hole in my heart.

I think Pentax's strength is to package a professional device and market it as a consumer product. The ergonomics, ruggedness, sensor image quality, and of course the OVF are all hallmark attributes that can keep sales coming versus disposable mirrorless bodies and a new arms race in new lens mount ranges.

I will never go back to film, though. Everything about film is inferior to digital except the delightful way it screws up the image. Pentax brand managers want to capitalize on its grasp of the past - let's all hope that isn't being made in sacrifice to Ricoh's grip on the present.

Shooting film, the feeling of being an excellent photographer lasted until I got the photos back from the developer.

With a DSLR, that feeling lasts until I see the shot on the back screen.

With a MILC, I'd get that reality check even before I pushed the shutter button!

So many wasted shots that would've saved me from taking! 🤯

It's been nearly a year since I bought my KP plus a Sigma 17-70mm 1:2.8-4 DC lens but I haven't really been out and about to use it seriously except to test it and end up with basically very sharp but boring images.

There is so much to learn on how to use it, so in taking it a step at a time, I'm up to page 52 in the manual :lol:
But I do just love it.

One of the reasons to buy this camera was to be able to use my collection of Takumer and Pentax vintage lenses, some with M42 mounts (with adaptor) and the rest are Pentax-K mounts.

This last weekend I decided to use the camera 'seriously' and use it for capturing the Lordington Lavender Fields.
I was not disappointed and here are a couple of 'My Best Shots' from this wonderful Lavender experience.

MY FAVORITE CAMERAS AND LENSES

I use to shoot Pentax and Ricoh cameras and Zeiss 50mm lenses during the film days. I also shot Olympus and Nikon. Starting in 2003 I began shooting with digital cameras. I began with Canon and owned three DSLR cameras and a bunch of lenses. I also shot Mirrorless cameras and owned one ASP-c and two full frame Sony cameras and lenses. I then moved to Pentax DSLR ASP-C (crop cameras), the K3-Mark ii and the KP. Also, DSLR Full Frame cameras, the K1 and K1-Mark ii. I have owned and shot the Fujifilm x100v, X-T4 and the X-T5.

When it comes to my favorite cameras they are, the Pentax K3-Mark iii ASP-c and the Pentax K1-Mark ii full frame. My favorite lens for the K3-Mark iii is the HD Pentax-DA* 16-50mm F2.8 ED PLM AW and my favorite lens for the K1-Mark ii is the HD Pentax-D FA 24-70mm F2.8 ED SDM WR.

Here are some photos from my Pentax K3-Mark iii with the HD Pentax-DA* 16-50mm F2.8 ED PLM AW (my favorite camera and lens of all time). My second favorite Camera and lens is the Pentax K1-Mark ii using the HD Pentax-D FA 24-70mm F2.8 ED SDM WR lens.

I just looked at my k-3, KP, and k-100d. No real differences in brightness. I think this is interesting as it implies that the brightness is a design goal.

A quick side-by-side comparison between the viewfinder info in the K3iii and the KP shows the K3iii to be (apparently) slightly brighter but the characters themselves to be slightly smaller … all in all very much of a muchness.
FWIW … the K-5 is also very similar and... surprise, surprise! … the information in the *istD viewfinder is larger and brighter than all of them :)
