Wow.. after like a year of not visiting the forum, I'm glad i came back!! Got a shot coming up I been wanting to use my 50-135 which dies many years ago and I can't deal with manual focus.. Going to give this a try today!! Awesome.
Mod should take pjm1 post #274 and make a STICKY out of it. I read through the whole thing and he describe it very well.
Edit: YES!!! Did it over lunch! IT WORKSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! IT'S ALIVEEEEEEE!!!!
I'm so happy again :D one of my fav lens. Yesterday took it to the park and I did not enjoy manual focus in the bright sun :P.

Thanks :)

You're refering to the SDM problem :\...
I was quoted 300 for fixing it on my 50-135..
Do this.. just work slowly in clean space with bright light. DIY SDM repair v1.0 |

Does anybody know this? What does pentax typically charge? Nobody willing to give me anything unless I sent the lens in which is basically time consuming and if I decide not to fix it I would waste the whole time period. Pentax have the worse customer support ever. I Love the camera and lens but this is REALLY fking pissing me off :\

Mine 50-135 recently just fail. It started acting up in dec 2011 and after unmount and mounting it a few times it work again. Now it's completely dead this past weekend I tried. I'm juust freaking sad and piss but I knew this day would come. I contact pentax and they said they'll do free estimate for the cost of repair.
Has any one have SDM repair by them and know how much it cost? Also -- are they just replacing the motor and basically in 2-3 years we're having this same problem again?
And warranty for 50-135mm is one year I assume?

i mean i look at the back, there's CLEARLY a fking space for a Fn button... I got it working now but it's still an annoyances. I guess we just have to live with it.. That and the new SD slot compartment feel cheap. I miss my flippydy switch to open like the k20d :D.

Ok, don't tell me to RTFM.. it's been driving me nutz..
on my k20d, my camera is usually in selected focus mode and i use the 4 directional dial to pick focus.. if i need to change WB or flash mode...etc.. I just press Fn and then use the 4 directional dial..
this is gone in k-5.... it's driving me nuts.....
the way i know how to do it is to switch out of that mode and the 4 way become available then change what i want and then change back. but that seems stupid. I dig everywhere in the freaking menu and can't find it :\
please hit me over the head and tell me I overlook something..
thanks,

So bah....
I thought I got away with it forever. I have 50-135mm over 1.5 years now and it has been great.
The other day I went outside and I was switching from my prime to it and it wouldn't focus on my k20d. I had to unmount and remount 2-3 times before it did.
Today.. I mount it on my k-5. It wouldn't focus -- realize that I had the switch on lens to MF (duh) i switch it to auto. It still didn't focus.. After 3-4 remount, I went and clean the contact (never done this on any of my lens before) and it still didn't work. I was kinda sad, but after a few more half press shuttle, it come back to work and I shoot for the next hour with no issue.
Is this a sign that SDM about to go out :\?
Thanks,

Agree with you. One other thing i might add is that i started with pentax on the K100d and the sd slot compactment just slide open. Then I upgrade to k10d and k20d and it's a flip switch. I really like that design. Now the k-5 seems to go back to the k100d design and that to me feel a little cheap. But overall it's such an amazing camera.

mine is arriving today from adorama! i can't waitttttttt. I really want to do some video shooting with some of my primes and I already been looking at follow focus and dollly diy stuff. I know k-5 video has some lacking features and since I been playing with a 7D I know it's gonna dissapoint me a little bit.. but it's gonna be on PENTAX GLASSES!!!

hey pentax kits is pretty good. IF you going to use that as indoor, you just have to bump iso to around 800-1600 (depends on light condition). I usually shoot in door around that area with my k20d and it's fine.. However if u really don't like flash, prime is the way to go :).
personally when in door i go with my 16-45mm ceiling bounce flash setup. my flash is an old 1990s sunpak flash. it works well :)

I realize all the video limitation with the k-5 but I still got one to mess with b/c I got all these lens..
May be somebody already discussed this before...Why can't pentax just freaking release a firmware to fix the video format and controlling apeture while filming :\.
I feel like this is reserve for the next k-3 :D
what are your thoughts on this?
