I don't know. I am still a n00b, but I do like my Rokinon/Samyangs.

Used K5iis for a casual hobby photographer? Is it good enough?

I only shoot astro, and I am pretty clueless about cameras in general, but I love my K5 II S for what I do with it, and it has been bulletproof since I bought it in 2014. Several nights, the dew has been literally dripping off of it, and it never skips a beat.

Great insight, guys. Thank you!

I do a simple star minimizing focus with LV at max zoom, and then hands free test shots to verify. I'm going to tinker with it some more tonight and see if I can do any better, but if I'll probably just spend the money towards a Sigma 35mm F1.4 before dumping more into what sounds like a sub-optimal astro lens, at best.

Thanks again, all!

Thanks, all! I feel like it must be the lens as well, considering my Rokinons work great. That's a bummer as this is my first fancy genuine Pentax lens :( So, do you think the AF adjustment settings won't help at all? I'll likely tinker with them before I send it off, but just curious what you all think.

Hello all. I hope this is the right place for this. I have a K5 II S that I use exclusively for astrophotography, and have been using two different Rokinon MF lenses with no issue for years. They both run "past infinity" on the focuser, and I am able to dial in focus for pinpoint stars without issue.

Fast forward to yesterday, when I was attempting to shoot with a new to me, used Pentax HD 35mm f/2. This is my first AF lens, but I set it to MF because I am so used to dialing in focus manually anyway. The issue is that when I'm getting REALLY close to dialing in the perfect focus, I run out of travel and can never achieve full infinity focus.

Although I have been dabbling in astro for years, I am still a camera neophyte in general, so please be gentle regarding terminology etc. If I understand correctly, there is an AF fine tuning menu in the camera. Will tweaking that allow me to get that last bit of distance needed to achieve infinity focus? And am I correct in assuming that this adjustment moves the sensor itself closer to or further from the lens to achieve this effect?

TIA for any and all help! A couple of my astro shots for attention :)

Thanks everyone! Pete, I do, but for some reason I was having technical difficulties with my stacking software.

Thanks all. As for the illumination, there was only ambient lighting from some street lamps int the parking lot. No direct lighting.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. Are you referring to the focus? :)

Hello all. I am attaching my first two attempts at DSO with my Orion scope and K5 IIs.

Andromeda was 11x3mins at ISO 400 and 1 dark.
Horsehead was 10x5 mins at ISO 800 and 1 dark.
Scope is an Orion 8" newt on atlas eq-g with Orion star shoot autoguider.
Camera is a Pentax k5 iis
Prime focus with a coma corrector.

Hmmmm...Ron, my NR time is actually lower than the exposure time. It's maybe 6 or 8 seconds.

Haha! Problem solved...I hate to admit it, but I pulled up one of the dark frames in LR and saw that the exposure was set to 1/20...oops. Like I said, noobishness.

hey guys, I have searched interval shooting quite a bit and have not found anything that addresses my issue. I am trying to shoot astro time lapse with the built in intervalometer with zero success. I am set for JPEG, NR is on, 20 second exposure at ISO 800, timer set for every 36 seconds. The camera seems to oem the shutter and take a series of pics, but when I look at the playback, I just have several black frames to scroll through. I'm sorry if I have missed something well documented here. Forgive my noobishness!

Awesome, nightfly! I have a couple more beginner pics to share. I know I still need a lot of of help as far as settings and post processing, but here are my neophyte attempts from last night :) I am learning more each time I take the camera out, so I hope I can get some really nice photos eventually. As always, help and advice is much appreciated!

Thanks guys. Now I am having an issue with the SD card I think. First it said it needed to be formatted, so I did. Now the camera takes photos, but they end up as nothing but black when you view them. Everything looks normal through live view, so not sure whats up with that...I am trying a slow format on the SD...
