Memories from December 2016. By that time I thought I was comfortable with the 645z after shooting with it for almost two years. The reality is that I am still learning new things about the camera.

These pictures are from the North of Finland on the border with Norway at about 69 deg north. The cottage is on the banks of the river border with Norway and is frozen during winter time. In Summer the main activity is fishing.

Every night we drove accross the border into Finland looking for locations where the lights will be stunning, and found a lot. The temperature at night was -34 deg C. The 645z was a star, never faltered. When returning to the cabin I would take out the SD cards and battery, close the gear bag and leave the camera (and lenses) in the gear bag in the ante-room, which was the same temp as outside, just shielded from the wind and lockable. So the whole time we were there, the camera was like a block of ice. This protected the camera and the lenses from condensation, which is more harmfull.

Our little group of strangers staying at the cottages shared a VW minibus, which really struggled to warm up, regardless of the front radiator being screened off, the engine was running too cold to have any spare heat to warm up the cabin. Sitting still for an hour in zub-zero temperatures were not too pleasant. There was no way to escape getting cold, even though we had cold rated boots, merino wool clothing and down jackets. Upon returning to the cabin in the eraly morning hours the highlight was lighting the wood stove and thawing in the sauna.

Pic #1: 645z + DFA 55mm - The cottage we stayed in from the outside, small inside because a lot is crammed into the space, small living room with a wood stove (a must have) a small sauna (another must have), basic kitchenette (somewhat necessary) and a hot shower next to the sauna.

Pic #2: 645z + DFA 55mm - The access road to the cottages complex.

Pic #3: 645z + DA 28-45mm - The northern lights taken from the frozen river, looking North.

Since the peak season for lights is 2023-2024 we are planning another trip, but this time to the north western part of Norway and not in the middle of Winter.

Here are some of the last of the desert scenery pics from Namibia.

This pano is from several panels taken with the 645z + P67 200mm lens in the late afternoon.

I printed a +/- 3m x 1m print for the one wall in the living room and I light it up with two spots. Visitors come into our home, stop talking and start staring at the wall. It looks like a window overlooking this scenery. As you get closer to the picture it draws you in more and more. Fun to watch...

This is a view half way up a dune at Sussusvlei called Elim Dune, looking eastward. We always ignored this turn-off until our last day, we decided to see what is there. The initial impression was a bit 'hmmmm' but the combination of the late afternoon light, clouds, and the results of the recent rains changed it to a 'I-must-have-that' kind of view. Although on Flickr the resolution is limited plus Chrome is also limiting the resolution it can display it is still impressive, in my view :-)

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

and a crop of the centre part of the picture, this is the part people walk up to the first time, then they start to explore with their noses up against the canvas...

I have become quite comfortable with manual focus after ditching my split-focus focus screen and going back to the stock focus screen. It is bright/clear enough for me to see if details are in focus or just off. it took some practice because I was addicted to autofocus and the split-focus support, but I eventually got it to an acceptable level and it is fast. I dont need to touch any control to have a focus point on the view finder, I just have to look there and focus on what I see.

The whole Namibia trip was mostly manual focus at f/6.7 even for wildlife and quick actions (At f/6.7 you don't get much depth of field). Most of the time I used the P67 200mm or the FA*300mm with TC1.4, all manual focus.

Once I used the 300mm with both TC1.4 and TC2.0 (==> 840mm). Pics came out so-so, but still good memories. I would have done better with the FA400 + TC2.0. But unfortunately the 400mm was not in the bag. Occasonally I also used the 300mm and the 80-160 with auto focus which I found rather annoying, most of time in getting a compositon was spent on focussing. I hardly ever shoot with a tripod so I am moving as fast as I think is needed and able. With the 300mm and beyond I use a monopod.

I also removed the Flickr links on the pictures. Can you please test to see the pictures show for post #19804?

Some pictures of the desert dunes in Namibia.

Pic #1, #2 & #3 on the skeleton coast about 1 hour from Swakopmund driving on the beach at low tide. There was a heavy bank of fog moving in from the Atlantic, which covered the dunes and at one point the visibility was down to almost nothing.

Pic #4 dunes outside Swakopmund

645z with a variety of lenses including: 645 FA 80-160mm, 67 M 200mm, 67 M 55-100mm.

Tonight's crescent moon was too nice to ignore, so I grabbed the 600mm and took a snap from the backyard.

It's actually a Kapok bush - not that it matters on a photography website ;-) Great photos! Stunning scenery!
Been along the Gibb River road twice when we spent several years in the top end. Your photos make me yearn for another trip.....but it's about 5,000 km to the start point these days!

Went ot the UP of Michigan last weekend with the hopes of seeing Northern Lights, which didn't happen. Did catch this at sundown on our last night there though. Sunset wasn't as magical as it was the night before, but I love the colors shining off the water.
