Hah, you just have to get there early in the morning or late in the afternoon! There are crowds, but I wouldn't call it crowded. There is a lot of talk about boosting tourism in Western Aus, but I personally (selfishly) hope that it doesn't happen. Keep it all low-key.

Yep, it's the Fotodiox. I chose it over the Kipon simply due to cost. I love it, but mine is heavily modified. I've added aperture control and a second tripod foot for verticals.

The downside of the adapter is that it is prone to vibration and wind (which may be in part from my mods) and if there is a strong light source just out of frame when it is shifted there is some extreme veiling flare and you lose a lot of contrast. However, merely shielding the lens with your hand while taking the photo is usually enough to negate this (as long as it isn't a long exposure).

Come visit the Kimberley if you can! It's a lovely area, but you either need a competent 4WD or deep pockets to really see the best of it.

Lastly, the Pentecost River Crossing. A rather iconic final hurdle for the 4WD adventure of driving the Gibb River Road.

Also full of salties ( salt water crocs ), which I only later found out after having walked the crossing plenty of times trying for the perfect sunset.

First is 50R and Pentax 55mm, shifted and stitched. Some tilt applied for full depth of field.

Second and third were almost the sunset I was hoping for, but the clouds moved a little too far north. Still, low wind meant for good reflections off the river beside the crossing. Credo 60 and Pentax 28-45mm, exposure blended, and 50R with Pentax 35mm, single exposure. ND filter used for both.

Fourth is of the crossing itself, looking across the river with the Cockburns in the background. Credo with Pentax 28-45mm, Grad ND filter and CPL, focus stacked.

Fifth is with the 50R and 55mm. Tilt applied meant I didn't need to focus stack; the more I use this feature, the more I appreciate its usefulness. Grad ND, shifted and stitched.

Sixth was well after sunset, with the afterglow behind me colouring the foreground and the last light on the high cloud overhead. 50R and Pentax 35mm. Focus stacked, shifted and stitched.

Seventh was Credo and Pentax 28-45mm. I haven't fully warmed to the 4:3 ratio, but I tend to find it fits my purposes more frequently in vertical orientation; sometimes remarkably well. Focus stacked.

A few from around the town of Kununurra.

First is from a local National Park known as Hidden Valley. Layered stacks of rock catching the late afternoon light. Credo 60 and Pentax 28-45mm, exposure blended.

Second is from an area known as Swim Beach, just upstream from the Ord River control dam. This means that it's free from saltwater crocs and safe to swim! Credo 60 and Pentax 28-45mm, cropped.

Third is Hidden Valley again, 50R and Contax 35mm focus stacked, shifted and stitched.

Fourth and fifth are Boab Trees in the late sunset afterglow. Both with 50R and Pentax 55mm. Exposure blended, shifted, stitched.

Some waterfalls from the area.

First one is the waterfall at the end of Amalia Gorge. Usually, the waterfall is dry by the start of the dry season, but an excellent wet season ( read: a whole lot of rain ) has kept it flowing. 50R and Pentax A 35mm, shifted, exposure blended and stitched.

Second one is Emma Gorge, where the waterfall drops into a beautiful pool. Caught with the sun just about to peek over the edge of the cliff top. 50R and Pentax A 35mm, exposure blended, shifted and stitched.

Third is at the first set of cascades in Amalia Gorge. After sunset with the last colour on the clouds and the sunset glow on the rocks. 50R and Pentax 55mm, shifted and stitched.

Fourth is also Amalia Gorge, taken recently after some unseasonal rains that have rejuvenated the local waterfalls. Credo 60 and Pentax 28-45mm nearer the wide end.

Fifth and sixth are of the waterfall at McMinnons Pool, at the zennith of El Questro Gorge. Only took the GFX on the walk into the gorge, as the Credo won't fit into my waterproof container and there is some wading to get to the end of the gorge! 50R and Pentax 55mm shifted, exposure blended, focus stacked and stitched for the vertical pano. 50R and Contax 35mm exposure blended and focus stacked.

Another photo dump, these from spending time in the Kimberley region of Western Aus.

A bunch of photos of the Cockburn Ranges ( pronounced Kohh'burn, FYI ), the edge of a large plateau with bluff mesa-like cliffs around its edge.

The first was with the GFX50R and Pentax A 75mm, shifted and stitched. Standing on the bonnet of my car in the middle of the road, shortly before sunset.

Second is early morning with the GFX50R and Pentax D-FA 55mm, shifted and stitched.

Third is of a juvenile Boab tree ( I believe ), near the end of its flowering stage and producing seed pods. After sunset, Leaf Credo 60 and Pentax 28-45mm focus stitched.

Fourth is from the edge of a small pond, with the pre-dawn colour on the high cloud and the Cockburns catching some of the glow from the eastern horizon. Leaf Credo 60 and Mamiya 80mm stitched into a pano.

Fifth taken just after sunset, 50R and Pentax 55mm, shifted and stitched with some tilt applied for full depth of field.

Sixth is sunset with the 50R and the Contax 645 35mm Distagon, shifted and stitched. Pre-set and stuck at f11, as well as monumentaly frustrating to use; but bigger image circle and better IQ near the edges than the Pentax 35mm. Compromised, but worthwhile.

Seventh is 50R and Contax 35mm, shifted, focus stacked and stitched. Eight is Credo and Pentax 28-45mm at the wide end - single exposure. Spinifex grass bushes amongst the regular grasses with the Cockburns in the background.

Lenses 645

I don't know if I'm reading your question incorrectly, but I would be astonished if you could find an adapter to mount Pentax 645 lenses onto a Mamiya 645 body. As far as I know, there is no stand-alone adapter commercially available, and I haven't found any boutique camera modifiers who offer them on small volume either. Everyone who has mounted Pentax 645 lenses onto Mamiya 645 camera bodies has adapted/modified the lens itself by stripping off the bayonet and attaching a modified Mamiya bayonet.

If there is an adapter available, I would certainly love to know!

I have adapted two P645 lenses to Mamiya 645. One was the A 35mm. You need to maintain the spring tension on the aperture lever, and then simply use the aperture ring on the lens to adjust as needed. Completely manual operation.

The other lens I have adapted is the 645 DA 28-45mm. Like the A 35mm, I had to strip the bayonet off it, but my adapting plate/spacer for this one needed an aperture ring to engage with the aperture pin on the back of the lens - much more complicated, but still completely manual operation.

I would like to sit down one day and try to 3D model an actual adapter to see if it is possible, but with less than 8mm to work with between the two flange faces, there's not a lot of space. I kinda feel that if it were possible the big boys ( Fotodiox, Kipon ) would have tried by now.

I do think it's a worthwhile pursuit, depending on what your level of expectation is for image quality. The Pentax range of 645 35mm lenses are better than the Mamiya 35, and Mamiya doesn't really have any equivalent of the 45-85mm that I'm aware of. There is also the 33-55mm that has no equivalent in Mamiya 645 mount for something even wider.

Some pictures that I dug up of my adapting attempts. A couple of pics of the 28-45mm adapted can be found here, due to Pentax Forums not letting me upload the same photos twice.

Thanks :)

Both cameras usually go with me in one (rather heavy) backpack. The GFX was initially intended as my back-up for when I needed higher ISOs (the Credo is not good at anything over ISO100), but I have become rather obsessed with the 2:1 format and the shift adapter that I use with my Pentax 645 lenses gives me nearly exactly that, so I find that I am using it a lot.

I do prefer the files from the Credo, but sunrise/sunset colours can be tricky with it, so at the moment I am favouring the GFX; especially for sunrises when the Credo can be difficult to work with. Any shutter speed over 1 second and the Credo has to take a dark frame of equal time. It is incredibly frustrating to take a 25 second exposure and have to wait another 25 seconds just to find out that you messed up the exposure or the focusing. Sunsets are better as if I find a spot I like I can set up, compose and focus in better light before it gets too dark.

If I can compose neatly with 4:3 ratio and work with the shutter speeds? Credo all the way! GFX for everything else.

Yep, there are those that: (1) Want to know how it performs on 44x33 sensors, (2) How it performs on 53x41 sensors and/or 645 film, and (3 - the most niche) how the lens performs across the entire image circle given; as well as perhaps the application of lens movements. The answers to (3) would likely cover both (1) and (2), but with not that many people engaging with the gear in that way it's rare to have it happen. It just so happens that (3) interests me most at the moment.

Lastly, a few from around Nanutarra. First four are from Yannarie River, with a sunset and early morning. The morning brought thousands upon thousands of Budgerigars out in flocks that began circling the pools or water. They would fly around in a swarm looking like locusts and land to take a quick drink before taking off again to avoid the various falcons and kites swooping through. Incredible to watch as well as listen to. Tiny they may be individually, but in numbers the noise they make is impressive and a pleasure to listen to.

First and third shot with Leaf Credo 60 and Pentax 28-45mm. The second shot I actually had to bump up the ISO to 100 ( *gasp* ) to get a faster shutter speed ( but not fast enough ). Looks okay; at ISO 200 things begin to fall apart very quickly. Second with GFX50R and Pentax 645 D-FA 55mm, two panels stitched. It is stitched where the flock of birds conveniently finish ( like actually, that's where the edge of that particular flock was; but it does look a bit too convenient). The fourth shot was a bit later when the various flocks joined up and began drinking. Taken with GFX50R and Pentax A 75mm.

Fifth shot is the tail end of a sunrise on top of a razorback ridge. GFX50R and Pentax A 35mm.

Three from beaches near the town of Esperance. First is from a beach whose name I'm not actually sure of, but it neighbours Twilight Cove. Second two are Twilight Cove at sunrise.

All are shot with the GFX50R. First is with the Canon 16-35mm f2.8III, second and third with the Pentax A 645 35mm. Third is shifted and then rotated to get the final field of view. Four panels wide.

Two shots from the Ningaloo Solar Eclipse on the 20th.

I learned about the eclipse a couple of weeks before it occurred, and was thoroughly surprised that I had managed to live under a rock for the last 12 months. It was big news around the country, and I just happened to be in the area.

Largely unprepared, I only had the lenses that I had with me, so I couldn't use my longer telephoto primes due to them being 1,500km away in storage. That left my K-1, Sigma APO 70-200mm and Tamron 1.4x teleconverter and some ND filters. I did my best, not knowing what really to expect.

The eclipse was a total eclipse although I was on the edge of the area where the total eclipse would be seen. It was projected to last for 62 seconds, but it seemed much, much shorter. The experience was absolutely wonderful. On the photography side, I did kinda blunder, as I didn't really know what to expect. These are about the best of what I could shoot, heavily cropped and pushed very hard in post ( +5 stops . . . ). One from just before the total eclipse, and the next from just after.

I do have shots with the sun completely blocked, however the drop in luminance within those few seconds is so severe that in a panic I ran the shutter speed out way too long and motion blur ruined the shots. Better to have dropped the aperture value drastically or to even have removed the ND filter completely. The lens combo is also very prone to flare, but you gotta work with what you have. Still happy that I got something, and I'll be better prepared for next time :).

Testing Pentax 645 35mm - SMC Pentax-A vs HD Pentax-D FA

A forum user going by Gerd made some comments a number of years ago about using the 25mm on a Cambo Actus and GFX ( small tech-cam rig, as you probably know ). He seemed to be content with the results, but also made comments elsewhere that the overall performance fell short of the GF 23mm in comparison ( unshifted ). His comments were brief, and I private messaged him a few months ago to ask for some more indepth info about how it performs when shifted. He never responded, and hasn't been active on the forum for some time now. I might try to dig up the thread later when I have some time.

A shame, as I also am highly curious about how well it would shift, and there is precious little on the 'net about it. His experience would be invaluable.

Hearing this is a bit of a shame, I was pondering about whether the D-FA would be an upgrade over the A for shifting. One question that I have is in regard to the image circle size. Someone earlier in the thread mentioned that the files of view of the A version is slightly wider (by how much, I don't recall being mentioned), and I'm curious as to whether you think the image circle of the D-FA is any greater to compensate?

I use my copy of the A version with some success on a GFX50R and the Fotodiox T/S adapter, and at the extremes of shift (12mm, I think) the image begins to degrade markedly and the corners darken. Mounting a filter makes the vignetting worse, and perhaps that is an advantage to the D-FA for having a larger filter thread?

Recent sunrise from Mt Toolbrunup. Bluff Knoll is on the distant horizon, and is the highest peak in southern Western Australia - the only place in WA that gets an annual dose of snowfall. All taken with Fujifilm GFX50R. First three with Nikon 19mm TS/E, last one with Pentax 645 A 35mm, shifted vertically. All are blends. The Nikon 19mm tends to flare quite significantly, so had to use the 'ol finger over the sun to cut the flare then blend the shots together.

Just below the peak of Isthmus Hill, near the start of the Bald Head Trail, which leads out to the distant peninsula. Pleased to get a decent shot here once the sun was up and cutting through the low clouds. Leaf Credo 60 and Pentax 28-45mm. Blend of 5 exposures, two for sky, three for foreground from about 5 minutes later. Horrible to merge, but worth it! Did the walk the previous day after a sunrise attempt at the same spot. 12 km return with my camera gear in my backpack, and I should have stretched more. Definitely still feeling the effort.

Before dawn, made it to Natural Bridge, near Albany. High cloud overhead, and the eastern horizon was glowing red, with the colour spilling over to the south. Lightning storm casually making its way eastward on the horizon. Taken with Nikon 19mm T/SE and Fujifilm GFX50R, two minute exposure.
