I do not use flash ever as I do not want to blind my subjects. Additionally, to those that recommend the use of the pop-up flash it carries a restriction of 1/180 I f I am not mistaken. shooting at 1/180 would be almost impossible considering the shutter speed for this image is 1/2500. I would have had to raise the aperture significantly to shoot at 1/180 which would not produce the blurred background effect (result of the shallow DOF), and I think this would prove detrimental to the image overall.

I think you are right what I have to clear here is the concept behind the photograph. I think I am going to go with the edit I posted except I will lower the contrast a bit. It seems that now a day the default setting for candids is that high contrast black and white you posted with out consideration for the subject. Thankyou, you helped a lot

Hmmm, Thankyou wildman. Normalizing the image does lose drama and it gives the image a kind of over processed look that I try to avoid. I think I will aim for a happy medium, so I can retain some of the drama, but the mans skin goes well against the rocks in the background.
@Johny To an extent that is the problem I have with all the photos I take as I take street candids. I try to avoid flash as I dont want to burn anyones eyes out (or alert them to the fact I am taking their photo). Also, the sun the the Peruvian highlands is incredibly intense (this foto was at 1/2500). Shooting anything less that 1/1000 (f 8 1/1200 ish if towards sun) is very hard unless you step into the shade in which case 3.5 1/160 is what you should aim for (for a portrait) . It makes life very hard when shooting in the city where you constantly changing light because of the buildings. I shoot in Tav to give me the control I need in terms of aperture and shutter speed. I used to shoot in A mode but I cant stand it when the camera opts for iso 100 and makes a picture blurry when it could have been comfortably shot at iso 500. Normally I try to expose in my head aiming for aperture ~400.
Thank you all for your help. I will keep editing (posting here and on flickr https://www.flickr.com/photos/41511062@N02/ if anything worthwhile comes up)
I take very few pictures less than+- 200 pictures is my batch from august 16th to present, so I am almost done.

I ended up raising the EV +.5 to expose his face properly as it seemed a little under exposed. I think that gives his face a nicer color.
Then I lowered the brights.
The problem being that the background is a bit blown out but I can live with that as it draws emphasis to the subject.
I sharpened a bit digitally outline emphasis. Not detail as it was causing problems with his face (dry skin on lips reflecting too much light.
then I raised contrast.

I took this candid picture of the guide at incahuasi. I was curious to know how you (people of pentaxforum) would deal with such strong light contrast especially when the face is shaded. I have been traveling a bit in the highlands so I have been dealing with this in a lot of images. I hate raising the darks on the tone curve then I lose shadows. I think what I would do in this case is lower the darker 75% of the tone curve. I think I like to keep the background over exposed. Then play with the tone curve to raise the area corresponding to his face.
Thank you in advanced

Good call Vinni. I should have composed so the post isnt growing out of her head. I suppose being able to consideer things like that the moment you are shooting is what makes a good photographer. That is what I like about street photography, it keeps you thinking. Im constantly changing my aperture and shutter speed (I shoot in tav) and positioning. The challenge is that you only get one chance.

Hmm, I see what you mean. However, the highlight also indicates where her neck is. When you loose the highlight it is harder to see the direction in which she is looking.
As you said ultimately it is a matter of taste.

What do you mean by heavy reworking? I don't have photoshop if that is what you mean. The only thing I did to the image was put it in monochrome and play with the tone curve a bit.
Thanks for the advice, but I deliberately blew the fire works. I wanted it to look kind of apocalyptic.
I can't retake the picture because the fire works are gone and the woman is gone too. A man who was presumably her husband came over to her and told her she was getting in the way of my picture.
Thanks for the help

Ok. Thank you that means I did a good job getting rid of it. I can kind of see it still. It sticks out to me, but I suppose it is apparent to me because I know where it is(around shoulder height on the hair).
Thanks

I get the same feeling from photos that I shoot (even from my drawings) and I shoot candids. So I don't think it is entirely because you know the subject. sometimes I think the camera (or at least the way I use the camera) can make people look alone. Either way, nice picture it evoked the same sort of feeling in me.
I'm with Mprince quality images don't need image quality to make them good. (also I like the current DOF)

I was finishing up a day at the beach when I saw some fire works. I got out of the car set my camera to bracketing and shot. I remember my dad always tells me tat he doesn't like fire works because he grew up in tough times with terrorists setting off bombs. I shot/edited with that in mind. It becomes more relevant now, with the current Israel/Palestine escalation.
Regardless, This picture came out the best, but there was like a strange oval glow on the woman's hair (don't know what that is called). I edited the best I could. Is it noticeable when you look at the image? I don't really want to scrap this picture.
Any other advice is appreciated (particularly editing advice). |

I just saw this lens in a store for 120 USD. Does anyone know anything about it?
I have seen info on a 70-200 but nothing on 70-210.
It was f3.8 if I remember correctly.

Lucky contest theme. I have been working on a set of pictures focused on shadows and shapes in black and white. I doubt I will shoot anything better than this so here goes my entry 12800 ISO.

Been browsing this thread for a while. There is some great stuff here. I got out a bit today and thought I would post here. I was shooting with my 35mm f2.4 wide open at high ISO cause it was dark
I like the expression on her face. I cropped this one a tiny bit because a persons hair got into the lower corner. I feel kind of sketchy taking pictures of kids from that close, especially being Hispanic male in the US, but I couldn't help it.
that was the first shot I took today. I didn't have my camera settings right (big no no as far as candids go) so I had to shoot it like 4-5 times. The couple was so into each other they didn't notice.
This one really suffered noise... it is the only picture I cropped significantly I feel like cropping is kind of cheating I should have stood up and shot the picture from close. |

Thanks, on my older superzoom I found that I was only using it at about 20mm (after equivalency) or at around 50-60mm so I figured I didn't need anything else.

Hello I am 18 (going on 19) years old I live in the US, but was born in Peru and visit frequently (I will take my camera)
I have been browsing the forum since I decided that I wanted to get a pentax dslr.
I recently got a "used" (it was never opened so new) pentax k50 body for around $419. Instead of opting for the standard 18-50 zoom I bought a da 35mm f2.4 and a super-takumar 55mm f1.8 both for about 200.
prior to my k50 I owned a fuji hs 25 exr
I like to shoot at night after or during rain when you get the nice wavy reflexions on the street, and I like shooting nature quite a bit. I would like to save up for an FA 100mm f2.8 to shoot some macros (I am an entomology student).
I hope you can help me get better at photography
thank you
-Nicolas
