Hello everyone!!
First of all - thank you so so much to all that have commented on this thread with their advice, I really appreciate all the wonderful help, you guys rock!!

I thought I 'd better do a little update with what I ended up deciding to get! *drumroll please*

I settled for the K-3ii :D

There were a few deciding factors, the main one was that I liked how the k-3 felt in my hand whereas the k-1 was an unknown... pretty crazy hey? I guess that's the most important thing for me, how a camera feels in my hand.
Other factors included wanting to have fun without feeling like my camera should work for it's keep (I made the big decision to stop moving towards going pro).
Yes the k-1 was tempting, not for the FF (though I would have utilized that eventually) but for it's other in-camera goodies, but with the money left over (I had the total amount for a k-1 saved up) I lashed out on some other toys such as a good macro lens, stronger tripod and shutter remote...

Very glad to have decided not to repair the k-50, I probably never will because the k-3ii has proven to me what I always suspected (but blamed myself for) that there was something very wrong with it from the get-go (a while ago I posted a thread regarding it's strange colour cast).... using the k-3ii I have discovered that it wasn't me!

Below I've popped in some of the first few photos I've taken with the k-3ii.... I haven't had it long because the bugger got lost in the mail!!!
Quality is a little suss because I linked them from facebook.... aaaand facebook mangles photos grr.
Anywho, this is a few days in my life!!

Mares tail clouds over our dam (pond) there's rain coming this weekend!

Milky way over a southern cross windmill..... this is where I REALLY do not miss the k-50!! I can get away with a better ISO and that colour, yum!! (might lighten it a little bit though)

Gold bunny rose with the new macro lens....

Testing out the in-camera filters....

Horses, dust and sunlight at Kumbia campdraft...

Cattle bedded down for the night at Cooyar show.

Typical outback sunset.... That's "Burt" there, my droughtmaster heifer who is a good model because she's bucket raised and doesn't chase me lol.

Messing with the new macro again....

Messing around with the macro lens for not-so macro things haha.... (Model is "Angus" my beloved kitty)

Ok so that might have been a tiny bit excessive but I love sharing my world! It's why I take photos

:D

Lol yes, Adelaide does have a pension for the spectacular, I think because every time something does happen it's just so out there... I only moved away a short while ago and was pretty surprised

Comparing SA even to NSW, QLD or VIC is probably a bit suss too, I'm sure per capita they would have to be on par...

Yeah its amazing how many people just say no to that because it's "too inconvenient" I kind of get why, it would be a pain in the butt to drive 20k's into town to sell something, especially when my free days are limited too, I've just given up.

---------- Post added 01-19-17 at 09:31 PM ----------

Haha you're probably right! I guess I didn't have anything to compare it with having never left the country in my 20-odd years, I did grow up near Adelaide though..... I didn't realise until I shifted to queensland that it had such a reputation 😨 knew it must be pretty bad when I heard it called a murder capital on an American poscast lol.

Sorry I should have been more clear lol, all the gumtree ones I found that weren't asking for insane postage were pick-ups only, I missed that bit... I don't go to pickups because I'd be on my own and I've been caught out by a creep before... it got pretty messy... yes bad stuff happens even here in sunny australia...

Yeah that's what confused me, the seller heading listed it as being for canon but when i looked it up it said pentax... very confusing, have asked seller to clarify.

Thank you for the links, you're a legend 👍 🙂

Hmm next question... I know absolutely nothing about wireless shutter remotes and such, and I'm having trouble googling it.... is the Hahnel Giga T Pro Wireless Remote for Canon EOS/G11 compatabe with pentax or just Canon as the name suggests? I'm not finding many results for Pentax.....

Yep I'm in Australia... and being a single girl that would be looking at gear on my own I've ruled out Gumtree (our equivalent to craigslist) Postage from the states would kill me too haha.

Bdery - gorgeous image! I've been getting some pretty neat star bursts from that DA* 16-50mm too :) not that nice though lol.

I had initially considered getting a k-1 (because of it's nigttime capabilities) but decided to get the k-3ii so I could spend the $1200 - $1400 left over on lenses and other gadgets (like a flash lol)

rawr - you're talking my language! I've done a few drafts with it and it's been spot on :) It's hard to get advice on the subject - people underestimate how hard horse and cattle events are to photograph I think!

Haha!! I know right? it doesn't happen often! basically I got my nest-egg selling off some critters, we're suffering a pretty bad drought at the moment so I offloaded some hay-burners.

I've hit a bump in the road - I decided to get the Pentax k-3ii..... and spend what was leftover on gadgets and to stash in a high interest account and put towards a computer upgrade down the track, now I went to my choice of retailer who is giving me a nice fat 5 year warranty because I'm a chicken after what happened with the k-50 and I noticed that in their specs it said "NO" to weather sealing.... I thought the k-3ii had weather sealing? some places says it does and others say it doesn't.... Can anyone clarify please??
This, above ANYTHING else is something I cannot compromise on, and I would not hesitate to take a punt on a k-70's possible dodgy bits if it got me weather sealing if the k-3ii doesn't have it.......

Yeah kinda in a hurry to replace it, my back-up also died so looking at a k3-ii.... I'm a bit windy on the k-70.. I can't find a definitive answer on what aperture setup they used on it... once bitten twice shy...

Full frame isn't a drawcard at all for me, just the nighttime capabilities.

I'm really liking the thought of getting a macro lens... it would save a bit of work doing product photos for sure lol... this is what I currently manage with the lenses I have (just the handmade pages and not including the fly swat)

Murgon Saddlery

Macro would be handy for the leather jewelry I make and sell.

Most of the time though my photographic pursuits can be summed up here - Penny Kittel | Redbubble

So whatever I get is going to haveto be a bit of an all-rounder lol.

Awesome, thankyou 🙂

---------- Post added 01-17-17 at 10:49 AM ----------

To be honest I wouldn't get another k-50. Ever.
Getting the old one fixed is something I'd consider later and use as a back-up but I can't be without a camera that long - I'm in rural QLD and the last time I had something sent from VIC it took 6 weeks express post and cost a small fortune.

It's funny because I'm in the position where money is an object but it isn't.... when I say "can't afford" I mean I have a little nest egg that would allow the expense of a k-1 body (but no more) but I also have horses and they have a habit of eating nest eggs lol.

K3 sounds like it's the go though, thank you 🙂

---------- Post added 01-17-17 at 10:53 AM ----------

Lol no offense taken here 👍 I knew what you meant... it's just a matter of priorities 😉
If money were truly no object I'd just get both, I mean, who wouldn't lol.

Interesting.
Yep the LED's would be a godsend (I'm clumsy) but what I'm reading is that the k-3 is almost a bit of a must-do to appreciate the k-1...

I'm getting a bit of a plan here.... 2nd hand pentax's bring good money around here on buy/swap/sell pages and shop notice boards, I could easily sell a k-3 and my current lenses for a few good dollars and use it to fund a k-1 when the price comes down a bit... or once this big announcement comes though.... by then k-1 may be far outstripped by something else lol (and We'll be having this conversation again, k-1 versus 2020 supercamera lol)....

---------- Post added 01-17-17 at 04:23 AM ----------

Awesome! It's so nice to see it put simply!
I really do appreciate everyone's help in this... it's helping me find a plan and know that a k-3ii isn't too much of a compromise 😆

Not so interesteed in more megapixels... I was eyeballing the K-1 because I'd heard it was ideal as a nighttime camera with low noise for high appeture, I've just started delving into astro photgraphy so that's been the main iterest for me... as has the color range I keep hearing about.... the preview screen at the back also interests me because I get into a lot of tight spots at ground level taking photos so no mor bug-bites on my belly would be appreciated lol.
I hadn't heard a thing at all about how the K-3's handle it at night....

---------- Post added 01-17-17 at 03:40 AM ----------

Well that would be alright to live with... I only have it beyond 200mm when taking photos at campdrafts (I'm now aware most people here are american and probably haven't heard of it lol, campdrafting is an aussie horse sport a bit like cutting) so often end up cropping a bit anyway..... food for thought....

So far it looks as though a k-3 or k-3ii is in front.... as much as I'd like to wait the longer I wait the more money it's actually costing in a way, even though my camera isn't a source of direct income it is an important tool in our business so every day it's out of action we don't have products making it onto our online store..... and it's storm season haha pretty pictures not being taken!.... yes a lot of reasons why I cannot wait (and yep I had a backup but it's died too)

So I'm figuring so far go budget wise....be patient and see what comes up down the track... maybe pick up a k-1 when the shine wears off a bit.... or when I come across an unexpected windfall and don't have to find ways to justify it to myself lol

Yes, I'm in a bit of a bind indeed lol!
If I get the k-1 I won't be able to get any lenses for a very very long time... so I guess I'll have to keep my fingers crossed that the k mount lenses will play the game.... I had been wondering if it would be some kind of sacrilege to get a ff camera and whack an ordinary lens on it....

---------- Post added 01-17-17 at 01:01 AM ----------

Awesome!
It might be worth hanging onto then... will still need something in the meantime though, my new lenses are less than 12 months old and I worked pretty hard to get them so it would ve a shsme to have them mouldering in the cupboard...

The wait is going to kill me... we are just coming into storm season here in northern AUS which is when I take most of my photos for the year, already I've missed some one-in-a-lifetime photo opportunities and it's killing me lol.

Cool thanks :) I'll see how I go with the wait lol... I'm currently completely camera-less and rely pretty heavily on my camera for my parents business so given that Australia gets things light years behind everyone else I might still end up running with either of these...

Hello everyone - long time no see!!
It seems that the only time I ever post on here is when I'm in a pickle of some sort lol, though I do "lurk" a lot and enjoy looking at everyones photos... I learn a lot too 🙂

Now a while ago I upgraded from my beat up lite k-x to a pretty red k-50 which I was never entirely happy with (I never did overcome that green colour cast even in RAW and with manual setings & white balance) yet I was still heartbroken when my little red rocket did it's typical k-50 thing and the appeture motor completely karked it (died).

So rather than repair I have decided to upgrade (she's out of warranty) and it's left me with a dilemma.... big upgrade or little upgrade?

My natural instinct was to go for the k-3 or k-3ii (depending on availability locally) but then the k-1 caught my eye with all it's coolness... and I wondered if it was worth justifying the extra $1,200 (AUD) or so... I mean I can't really afford a new camera anyway so in for a penny in for a pound right? Lol.

My main argument is that the k-3 feels familliar to me, I borrowed my uncle's k-3 for portraits once and liked it, yet the k-1 is an unknown.... yet I fear making a step that is too small like last time if there is such a thing... I rued the day I'd bought a k-50 instead of a k-3 almost as soon as I had the k-50 in my hands and I seemed to demand more than the poor little thing could give yet the traitorous k-3 of uncle Tom's would willingly do so much for me putting the k-50 in the bad books....

Anywho.... if it's any help my lenses (well my main 2) are a Pentax DA* 60-250mm F4 and a Pentax DA* 16-50mm f2.8.... my other lenses are pretty shoddy and hardly worth a mention... nothing I own is FF anyway....

My main subjects are animals (usually horses) and natural stuff (you know, tweety bird and the vast queensland countryside) I also have a pretty active lifestyle and do take my camera everywhere I go (yes even horse riding)

I have just started to get iterested in night photography which is why the k-1 peaked my interest....

As for workload/where I'm heading well I'm definitely (obviously) not a pro but do make a small income from my photos (just about covering expenses) I rely heavily on my camera for product photography (my parents own a saddlery).

Basically in this post I'm not asking anyone to decide for me, but I'd like to hear people's thoughts on both cameras, what they like and don't like and anything else they know about them..... once bitten twice shy I don't want to get caught out again with another dud.

Ps. Apologies for the long winded post, it's late and I've had a few....

Well it took me a while to get back here!!
I did get those lenses eventually and ended up getting 2 new lenses and I love them both, one was the Pentax DA* 60-250mm F4 and the second was the Pentax DA* 16-50mm f2.8.... thank you so much to everyone for the helpful advice, you all taught me so much about lenses and it meant I was able to make the perfect choice.
Also happy to report that the new lenses have not copped nearly as much of a beating.... unfortunately my K-50 did do it's typical k-50 thing and die so in the market for an upgrade now lol....

Thank you :) all good! I really appreciate you taking the time to help!
Given that portaits are low 9n my priority list (I hate doing them but get conned into the occasional one by friends) I'll probably be a little less inclined to spend big bucks there.
With campdrafting I probably won't go below 200 as I find with the distances involved that even with my current 200 I have to crop a lot to get rhe horse filling the frame nicely.

Hiya!

It's been a while since I last visited the forums - every time I do it seems I'm in some sort of dilemma needing help lol! :o

Anywho, now that I'm acquainted with my k-50 I'm chasing new lenses as the old kit lenses that came with my k-x have had a pretty hard life and I'm looking to retire them (to put it nicely)
I had intended to get all new lenses when I got my new body but a few minor disasters meant I had to can the idea at the time.

Currently I have a Prime 35mm which is quite new so no need to replace that little sucker (I find I don't use it as much as I should, I keep going back to the next lens I list)
My favourite lens has been the kit 18-55 which is still going pretty good but it's done some hard miles in the outback so it's a little tired.
Last and least is the kit 50-200.... I'm not overly fond of it but use it to get that 200 zoom which I often need every little bit of with active horses, it's pretty well buggered.

I'm only looking at getting a couple of lenses for now, these will have to last me a fair while as I am on a budget.... I chose to mitigate this by getting a few good lenses rather than a lot of not so good ones, I'm aiming for the best aperture I can get my hands on within reason and weather proofing is a bonus.

Now, what the new lenses will be used for.
I love getting out and about in the bush, so a landscape lens is a must, for this I've been using my rather tired 18-55 as I love the versatility of the zoom and play with effects a lot, but I am open to suggestions or strong recommendations :)

Campdrafting.
If you haven't heard of it, it's a horse sport which is very fast pased, dusty, starts early in the morning and finishes around dusk, the subject will be 10 metres away from you one minute then across the arena (60 metres away) within a matter of seconds - weather proofing at campdrafts is a must... I'd like more zoom than I have but it's not essential, less than 200 zoom is a deal breaker.

I have just started to tackle portraiture after persistent um.... "urging" from my friends! This isn't high on my priority list though as I'm not a people person lol, I prefer to photograph animals!

Something I'm REALLY getting into is nighttime photos, this is a newly discovered obsession. so this is something I'll be keeping in mind as I select new lenses.

Obviously I dream of a big ass lens to make sneaking up on little birdies and wild animals easier, but it's not urgent....unless I win lotto or forgo getting the other lenses I'm looking at lol.

My main bug bear is where to get them from! I know there are a few really dodgy sites around, and I absolutely don't trust ebay for anything more than a few bucks..... plus it's a nightmare to navigate lol, I've been snooping around Ted's and Pentax Australia so far.

Any help is, as always, much appreciated, I guess what I'm asking is if there are any really bad ones to avoid, or any particularly good ones to snap up, it's difficult to track reviews for everything out there...
If anyone is after pics that better explain what I'm trying to say when I mention playing with effects or campdrafting, sing out and I'll post them :D

Cheers, and thanks for reading,
Pen

Bruce I could hug you for that!
Like I said in my initial post I had tried many many different settings, combinations, manual, auto, RAW ect ect and still kept getting undesirable results but with your suggestions it's giving me somewhere to start - as I was flying blind trying to find a solution.
I completely understand that different cameras would produce different results, I mentioned it to kinda illustrate the point that what I was seeing actually cold be captured if that makes sense (in other words what I was seeing wasn't just a figment of my imagination lol)

---------- Post added 06-26-15 at 11:49 AM ----------

Thank you Max, unfortunately I can't do the comparison as I don't have both cameras to hand at the moment, I have had problems with the colour in both RAW and JPEG and even in RAW it's taking extensive post processing to correct the colour.

I'll have a go at the snipping though, it's most noticeable on the horse so I'll pick him out :)

---------- Post added 06-26-15 at 12:04 PM ----------

Thanks guys :) like I said in my original posts, I was getting the same results when shooting in manual, I only had shots I'd taken on auto to hand when someone asked to see what was happening.

I'm trying out some of the suggestions stated in the thread though, hopefully I'll get some nice golden light to try them out again soon and see if the nice gold goes green/yellow again :)

Thank you :)
Monitor is correctly calibrated, I have also looked at them on another monitor, my phone and even on the preview on the camera....
The thing that's bugging me is that I take a photo with the k-50 and something's off.... then I put the same lens on my busted up old k-x and it captures the colours perfectly (so does my phone)

Admittedly it's not terribly noticeable.... but it's there where it never used to be and it's driving me crazy lol

Maybe I just got too used to how things turned out with my old camera and I'm just expecting the new one to behave the same way?
