Pentax KX and Astronomik CLS for astronomy?

Here is a single frame, about 61 seconds at ISO6400 and the CLS filter. This is with no post processing but in camera balance settings shifted away from blue. The problem with this filter and an unmodified K-x, when the temperature gets warm in summer it can suffer from red clipping making the red channel very noisy. With a full spectrum modified camera it's much better.

Pentax KX and Astronomik CLS for astronomy?

I have the 48mm (2") CLS. Yes it does produce a blue colour cast that can be difficult to balance. Two stops sounds about right. In general I prefer the Baader Semi-Apo filter. Virtually no colour shift and only 1 F stop dimmer. Or you could go for the Astronomik UHC-E which also claims to have little colour shift.

The 48mm filters are designed to be used inline down the optical path of a telescope. With most telescope to camera adapters they just screw in.

M16 is a tricky one for an unmodified camera so you've done well.

IR remote problem

Thanks guys. Yeah these remotes are really expensive ones at $1 each lol. The funny thing is, with the one that works for other camera models, it still works with the Nikon long after it's stopped working with the Pentax's. My old D70s must be more forgiving of dodgy remotes.

IR remote problem

I do most of my astrophotography with the IR remote to avoid vibration when actuating the shutter. Every now and then they stop working. They use those flat CR2025 batteries. Battery voltage is okay, I think, at least according to the multimeter. IR LED flashes as seen on IR camera. Twisting the remote sometimes brings it back to life for a while, then they die again. Actually die is the wrong word. They keep working, just that they don't trip the shutter. I have 4 remotes, different brands (but cheap Chinese) and they all do the same thing. What's going on? Cheap Chinese rubbish?

Awesome shot Stephen!

I've been nibbling at the Orion nebula for a couple of nights. About 4 hours of data. It's a bit soft as the atmosphere was wild! Skywatcher ED100 at F7.2, unmodified Pentax K-5, no filter for about half the data and Baader Semi-Apo filter for the other half.

Nice images Mike. You gotta be happy with those. I can't quite get an angle on M31 from my setup point. It's directly behind a street light.

The comet has now moved away from the Rosette nebula as it heads towards perihelion.

Comet C/2013 V5 (Oukaimeden) has been scooting past the Rosette nebula over the last couple of days. This is from last night with the ED100 at F7.2 and Pentax K-5. Didn't get as much time on it as I would have liked due to cloud and me screwing things up. It's only 7 minutes. My special interest in astronomy is comets, or at least photographing them.

Original internal filter, no cooling. About half the shots were taken at ISO1600 and the rest ISO3200 for the darker CLS and deep sky filter.

Thanks IO. The K-5 does seem to be performing a step above the K-x, but it is winter here with cooler temps no doubt helping. I have retired the K-x for astro work now and am just using the K-5 as it's a delight to use. I have yet to get the GPS unit for portable work, but have had too many letters from Bill lol.

Wow that's a spectacular image Seti... I like that you used an achro narrow band.

Comet 2014 E2 (Jacques) is in the morning sky at the moment. Imaged with a Skywatcher ED100 at F 7.2, 59 x 30 seconds, unmodified Pentax K-5.

How long an exposure before sensor damage?

Now you tell me....

Astrophotography is 99% of my photography these days. I haven't killed a camera yet, but now that I have autoguiding setup, the exposures will be getting longer, probably to 10 minute max.

Glad you figured out the problem Bill. That's a nice shot you have.

This is my longest total time I've spent on a single object. This is galaxy NGC247. It has very low surface brightness so needs lots of time. This is 327 x 1 minute subs through the ED100 at F9, Pentax K-5. In the bigger Astrobin upload, lots of tiny little galaxies in the background start coming through. I find it quite amazing. I really want to take more galaxy shots now.

Hi Bill, I don't have my histogram much past the far left hand side. Maybe you are overexposing causing the image to be washed out?
