Getting Better Flash Bursts: Godox li-ion vrs external battery pack

I got the response from Metz. Sorry for the delay.
They proved that it is a Pentax problem instead of a Metz problem, as the AF540 also slows down the burst rate of K-30 to about 1.5 frame per second. It's a pity.:hmm:

The response from Metz:
AW: AW: 52af-1 slows down the burst rate on Pentax
Dear Mr Xun,

Thank you very much for your email and for your reply.

We checked now our sample of Pentax K-30 with our flash unit 52 AF-1 and also with our original Pentax AF540FGZ II.

Camera Pentax K-30 runs in manual camera mode M (1/100 sec./ F4.0).

Both flash units Metz 52 AF-1 and also Pentax AF540FGZ are running in manual flash mode M with partial power level P 1/128.

In both cases (with Metz 52 AF-1 and also with original Pentax AF540FGZ II) the camera Pentax K30 slow down the image sequence to approximately 1.5 frame per second.

Faster image sequences are not possible.

So it seems to be a special characteristic of the Pentax K-30 to slow down the image sequence as soon as there is a digital data exchange between camera and flash unit.

As this camera characteristic is not a technical problem of the flash unit 52 Af-1 we fear that we can't change this respectively we can't help you.

We guess the only way for you to prevent the slow down of the image sequence is to insulate the three small additional contacts in your camera's hot shoe.

We regret to have no better information for you and remain

With kind regards

One guy reported a similar problem in China, which has been repaired by replacing the sensor (gyroscope I guess) for SR. In the video he posted, the sensor just shakes about 3 times per second as long as the shutter is slower than 1/5, even when SR is disabled.
So I think you should get your camera repaired by some experts.
Good luck!

I updated my k30 from 1.06 last night and it works perfectly. No obvious improvement has been observed. I don't have a PLM lens or a eye-fi card.
Thank you for the modification!

Yes, I have informed Metz this problem on their website. I hope to get a reply, especially a reply with a firmware update to solve this problem.

K-30 / K-50 Aperture Block Failue - Repair Solution available

I think it is aperture block on my k30. I can get live view on the screen even though it is very dark due to the minimum aperture.
Now my k30 works perfectly with AA batteries, again.:) The aperture block is really a strange problem.

Do you mean that the shutter block leads to the aperture failure? I can confirm that the aperture shrinks to the minimum. And now it only occurs with a fully charged lion battery. If the shutter also fails, I will just leave it:(:(.
Thank you!:)

K-30/K-50 Aperture Control Problem/Black Photo Repair - How I did it.

Bad news, the aperture problem comes back when the Lion battery is fully charged, while it does work well when the battery is not fully charged. However, the aperture problem is slightly different from that before I repaired it using the Russian method, the following are the details.
When I switch to LV mode, the aperture shrink to the correct F stop first, then after a very short delay (maybe less than 0.1s), it continues to shrink to the minimum. So it seems that the solenoid fails to hold the aperture in correct position when it should do. This problem occurs at about 20% probability when I switch on/off LV mode. BTW, the aperture always works fine with depth of field preview button.

I think it is a voltage-related problem since it only occurs with a fully charged Lion battery. This agrees with the fact that AA batteries can help solve the aperture problem. AA did work on my K30 for the last year until it got worse.

Perhaps I have to pick up my AA batteries again. I wonder whether it is because I sand the "horse shoe" too much. However, it is very strange that a fully charged battery causes the aperture failure.

I did try with manual mode on the Metz flash, and all the other function off on the camera, including lens correction. I will try as you suggested, to restart both the flash and camera or block the communication between them.

Thanks for your kindly advice!

Well, only with the digital contact covered can I shoot at Hi speed continuous shoot. You are right. It seems that the Metz is too smart to have a pure manual mode. Even on M mode, all the parameters except zoom and output power are received from the camera and cannot be manually set. Metz should add it a fully manual mode.
Thank you!

Hey there. I have some problem on continuous shot with my K30 and Metz 52-AF1. I cannot get a FPS higher than 1.5, even at 1/128 output and every option set to manual on both the K30 and Metz flash. I tested with manual focus, M mode, 1/180 shutter speed, Hi continuous shot mode.
Is there anything wrong with my setting?

Yes, you are right.
I had filed a bit and tested the force by trying to pulling it out by hand again and again, before I got this. I know my hand is not accurate...

I'm afraid not.
The magnet is too powerful. Both solutions, including filing the shoe and enlarging the space, are aimed to weaken the actuation between the shoe and the magnet.

It took me about two hours from removing the first screw to assembling everything back, including about one hour to file the "horse shoe" and test the actuation force again and again.
But I have spent many hours to search solutions, search how to disassemble the body, and decide to do this by myself.
By the way, I printed this as a screw map to keep all screws in their position. Transparent double-sided adhesive is very helpful in case you move the paper by accident.

Thank you for the detailed disassembly instruction.
I tried to repair my K-30 last night and it looks I did it. The aperture works normally with both AA batteries and Lion battery, at least till this moment. Cheers!
I filed two ends of the "horse shoe", following the advise from our Russian friends. https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/151-pentax-k-30-k-50/321871-k-30-k-50-ape...ailable-2.html
I prefer the Russian solution because in this way the magnet can still hold the horse shoe reliably while the actuation between them is weaken.

Please forgive me for my poor English.
