Got the results of the service department and they say the camera is not repairable. $300 down the toilet.

Warning to all other relying on Pentax cameras to be waterproof - they are not once the warranty expires.

I have been loyal to Pentax since my ME Super I got as a graduation present in 1981 but this really makes me question my next camera purchase. I want another weatherproof camera to take backpacking, kayaking, or to take pictures of the kids but I may have to look elsewhere.

This really makes me think twice about ever buying another camera from them again.

I looked at those options but $1200 for a DSLR case is a bit much for the pool. The Ikelite stuff looks good also but they don't have cases for the W-90 because - well its waterproof.

I have a housing that I used for those disposable box film cameras and it cost $10 and worked. $300 for a W-90 and it fries the first time it goes under water.

I to have a Pentax W-90 and used it on all types of rainy campouts and originally bought it to take on a Mt. Rainier climb. It did great in the freezing rain and snow.

Last week I took it in the pool to take photos of the kids underwater. Of course it died right away. I called Pentax directly and they stated that it is out of the 12 month warranty and will have to be fixed at a cost. I said that they sell the camera as a waterproof product and their response was that it is only waterproof while under warranty. That’s right - it is only waterproof while the warranty is active - otherwise 12 months.

I am questioning whether to send it in and I am seriously questioning whether to buy their products again. I have a Pentax K-100 that is nearing its 27,000 photo and I am waiting for their K5 replacement but this doesn't sit well with me.

Unless the camera is in a waterproof housing - I don't trust any of the manufactures claims of being waterproof.

I really hope this isn't a replacement for the K-5 and I am hoping that they come out with a pro level DSLR like the Nikon D3 series. Please tell me this is a joke. I was waiting for a real camera to replace my K100 and they give us this?

Sorry but this may be the end of the road for me with Pentax.

Neebie Lens Questions

Here is a question that may have been answered before but if someone could help me on this I would be grateful.

I have a Pentax K-100D. I have the 18-55mm kit lens, a Pentax 10-17mm wide angle zoom and a Quantaray 70-300mm. (Believe it or not I have had decent results with this lens)

I like to photograph scenery, nature, birds, macro, and once a year the Formula One cars in Montreal. I’m not looking to do portrait work but do take lots pics of my kids with the 70-300mm while they are playing. I would keep the Pentax 18-55mm and the Pentax 10-17mm.

What would someone recommend as a good mix of lenses to cover these subjects? I am open to Sigma, Tamron, or Takina lenses. I know I need to look at a dedicated Macro but that can wait for now. My first priority would be a good telephoto that is fast – for the June F1 race in Montreal. But like everyone I can’t buy them all at once and would like limit it to less than $1300.

I appreciate any input.

Camera Plate Question

Hello,

I have a K-100D camera that I am trying to find a camera plate that mounts to a Acratech Ultimate Ballhead. This uses the Arca style quick disconnect plates. Checked Acratech, Arca-Swiss, Kirk, Really Right Stuff, and Wimberley for K-100D custom plates.

Everyone sells K-10D plates but I cannot K-100D plates. Are the two camera bodies dimensionally the same? The technical support person at Really Right Stuff sent me a PDF of the L-Bracket Dimensions but Pentax does not or will not give me a drawing showing the tripod mounting holes.

Any suggestions or just use a universal camera plate or universal L bracket?

Thank You.
