Shooting portraits with 35mm prime or kit lens?

Hiya guys, I'm looking for advice for shooting portraits. I have to shoot photos for the officer board of my club, and I was wondering which lens I should use. The types of portraits are the general head+shoulders+torso shots. As of now, I only have the f2.4 35mm prime and the 18-55 kit lens. I like the prime since it has excellent IQ, but I heard 35mm isn't a good focal length because of distortion?
I can use my kit lens at 55mm the IQ wouldn't be as great. Any help would appreciated. Also if you guys can give me any tips or resources in taking good portraits, that would be great too, since this is the first time I'm taking them, thanks!

ALSO would it be beneficial for me to buy a 50mm prime (I can't buy it in time for this shoot however)? It's kinda close to 35mm so I'm not sure if the investment is worth it. Ok thanks!!

Hi Guys, I got my Pentax K-50 a month or two ago and it's been really fun to use. I've been meaning to expand my collection of lenses and the 50mm f1.8 is something that would mean a lot to add to my camera bag. I'm currently a college student at UCLA and a historian for my engineering club, which specializes in transportation. As historian, I want to keep improving my photography and capture what's going on around campus and events in my club. Receiving the 50mm will help my photography tons since it will force me to compose shots more carefully, and it will help me make my club more attractive.

Here is a cool shot I took on my trip to New York City just a few weeks ago. Thank you!

Wow I'll definitely look into getting that one. One thing though, will I be able to use the stock lens cap with that hood?
I'm currently looking at this one: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/41350-REG/Pentax_34260_49mm_Round_Rubber_Lens.html which looks promising since it can leave the lens hood on when not in use. It's just that it's a bit pricy for $15. Does anyone know of a similar hood that where you can leave your cap on?

Hey guys I got this lens a week ago and it's working great! I was just wondering, do you guys use a lens hood with it, and would you recommend getting one?

Should I be waiting for the potential k-60 or just buy a k-50 now? It's a really good deal but I feel like I would be missing out if the new one comes out soon...

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm actually now considering just getting the WR kit lens and the 50mm f/1.8 since it would give me everything I need for now :P. Is the kit lens generally good? I only mentioned getting a 35mm f/2.4 since people seem to really like it and the IQ seems leagues above the kit.

First prime lenses?

Hi Friends, I was thinking about buying my first Pentax (the K-30) and skipping the kit lens. I'm planning to get the 50mm f/1.8 along with another prime to bring on my travels. Which lens would be better for general travel and landscapes? The 35mm f/2.4 or the 28mm f/2.8? My dad recommended me the 28mm since he said that it would give me a wider range of focal lengths, but I've heard a lot of good things from the 35mm. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi friends, I signed up since I'm getting K-30 soon and wanted to ask some questions. I'm currently just using a Canon G12 so I'm pretty excited to finally get a DSLR :D
