Taken at a Hudson/Packard car show this is a 3MP crop of this striking hood ornament, using my Zenit MC Helios 44K-4 58mm f/2.0 lens, with the exception of some minor adjustments to curves & levels this photograph is SOOC, using Matrix metering and the Catch-in focus features of my K-7.

Shot at the 35mm setting, this was little more than a record shot of a modified truck at a recent car show. I wasn't sure what to do with what seemed to me to be a very ordinary photograph until I had another look at the results and settled on this crop. What do you think ?

Taken at an auto show in overcast daylight at my son's school, the cloudy conditions created a huge soft box effect with the defused lighting emphasising the chrome of the grille. Other than some smoothing effects in post to eliminate reflections on the chrome bumpers this photo has not had any sharpening or other work done to it in post. With the exception of the highlights and some colour accents on the hood and skulls, the overall colour of the vehicle lends the photo an almost monochromatic feel, matching the 'mood' of the subject, as it were. One of my favourite detail photos of automobiles from my collection.

Old Pentax Hard Lens Case Codes....

Hi mapguy,

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, I found a list of hard case codes for the SMC A-Series lenses from the early 80's in an old accessories catalog that I had lying around. Unfortunately, I don't have any idea of the difference between "HA" and "HB".

Hope you find this information useful.

Cheers,
Chris

Lens Case Interchangeable Lens

HA-90 24mm f/2.8, Macro 50mm f/2.8, Zoom 35-70mm f/3.5-4.5
HA-90B 28mm f/2, 28mm f/2.8, 35mm f/2, 35mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.7, 50mm f/2
HA-98 100mm f/2.8
HB-90 50mm f/1.2
HB-105 Zoom 35-70mm f/4
HB-120 135mm f/2.8, Macro 100mm f/4, Zoom 24-50mm f/4, Zoom 28-80mm f/3.5-4.5
HB-152 200mm f/4
HD-100 16mm f/2.8, 20mm f/2.8
HD-143 Zoom 35-105mm f/3.5
HD-190 Zoom 70-210mm f/4
HE-120 15mmm f/3.5
HE-169 Zoom 28-135mm f/4
HE-169B A* 135mm f/1.8
HE-189 A* 300mm f/4
HE-330 400mm f/5.6
HF-185 A* 200mm f/2.8 ED
HG-115E A* 85mm f/1.4
HG-140 Macro 100mm f/1.4
Trunk A* 300mm f/2.8 ED (IF), A* 400mm f/2.8 ED (IF), A* 600mm f/2.8 ED (IF), A* 1200mm f/2.8 ED (IF)

FYI I have the HA-90 and the HB-120 and these are both of the round hard-type with leatherette-type finish. Apart from the differences in height, to accommodate the 24mm vs. the 135mm lenses respectively, I see nothing that differentiates one from the other (i.e. the 'A' vs, the 'B' in the designation/ordering code).

Flucard Discontinued?

Hi,

One simple solution that I use (albeit a bit clumsy) is to use a Toshiba FlashAir card that transmits both RAW and JPEG files to my smartphone or monitor. The camera does not have to have any built-in wi-fi functionality as the card generates its own wi-fi hotspot! I find this feature useful for reviewing photographs taken on my Pentax K-7 by using my iPhone as a de-facto monitor, thereby obviating the need for external cables and other ancillary equipment. True, this does not give you any additional means of controlling the camera nor is it really "tethering" in the traditional sense, but provides an inexpensive solution for reviewing photographs taken on the go. For instant review I simply load the photos from the card to the phone which is attached to the camera's hot shoe using a Manfrotto TwistGrip Smartphone Clamp or similar.

Hope this helps.

Hi guys,

So for AUD$2490 I can get a K-1 body, plus the battery grip and an extra battery - for the equivalent of USD$1880 at today's exchange rates.

The wife will kill me if she finds out . . . .

Composite Photo Contest Submission

Hi,

This is a composite of two images, the first being of a Hawker Hunter aircraft (static display) at an airshow I recently attended, the second being a background image of clouds. The steps undertaken to create this image were as follows: 1. Create cut-out of aircraft and paste into new layer, 2. Adjust contrast to recover detail from original image (about 3-5 stops underexposed, to retain cloud detail in the original image), 3. Add motion blur to create sense of movement, 4. Paste image onto cloud layer, 5. Adjust lighting on aircraft to simulate how the plane would look "in-flight", 5. Overlay image with cloud effects, to create a sense of aerial perspective and the exhaust gases from rear of the plane, 6. Create faint "glow" within the airframe, to simulate afterburner ignition (unrealistic, but cool!), and finally, add flare effects and reflections on cockpit canopy to simulate sunlight, etc.

Hope you enjoy my submission !

Chris

P.S. On reflection, the only thing I would change in this image would deb to add some free space on the right for the plane to move in to, but that is easily fixed in Photoshop.

Fotolux Remote (IR) Trigger for pentax

Hi all,

Came across this great deal for an accessory that replaces the OEM Pentax Remote Trigger. Have tested this on my K-7 and it works perfectly, the only issue being that I had to replace the the battery as they have obviously been sitting around for a while. Seller is based in Sydney, Australia (see link) and the have around 50 or so of these in stock - the price ? AUD5.00 each (that right, $5.00) !

They have them for Canikon also. Just letting everyone know as these are small, handy and useful enough to throw into your camera bag.

Fotolux Infrared IR Remote for Pentax

Cheers,
Chris

Pentax K-7 Front e-dial in Manual Mode

Hi sterretje and Adam,

Thanks for the quick responses. I will try a factory reset and then go through my customisation options, hopefully this will help. Will report back on whether this has fixed the problem, although I am inclined to agree with sterretje, as the camera should work according to the manual straight out of the box (I have been using Aperture Priority mode 99% of the time during which I had the camera).

Regards,
Chris

Pentax K-7 Front e-dial in Manual Mode

Hi everyone,

Just writing to inquire as to whether anyone else has experienced this issue with the front e-dial on the Pentax K-7 when used in Manual metering mode. Basically, this is what happens – according to page 107 of the instruction manual, the front e-dial can be used to adjust the shutter speed after a metered reading is taken by pressing the Green button. When I attempt to do this on my K-7 (irrespective of which way the dial is turned), the shutter speed values change in one direction only (e.g. from 1/80s > 1/125s > 1/250s, etc, all the way to the maximum shutter speed).

No matter which way I turn the front e-dial, there is no way of going back to a slower shutter speed and the value indicated remains on 1/800s or whatever. I have come up with a work-around using the AE-Lock button (and adjusting the rear e-dial until the desired shutter speed is attained, after which I disengage the AE-lock button, change the aperture setting to the desired value using the rear e-dial, then use the AE-lock button to lock these settings).

Please tell me that it shouldn’t be this hard !

Thanks in advance for any advice/feedback on this issue.

Midnight Procession

A column of ethereal beings beckons us to join their midnight procession as an otherwise ordinary Service lane in Sydney's Chinatown comes alive during the Vivid Festival in September 2014.

On seeing the final result, I was happy to see the faint blue light from the "creatures" spill onto the adjoining walls of the lane-way, and how their design is mimicked on the adjoining brickwork.

The photo is a straight JPEG conversion from the original RAW file as I was pleased with the colour palette straight out of the camera, the only post-enhancement performed was some minor cropping to remove distracting elements from the edges of the frame. Exposure information is as follows - 30s @ f18, ISO 100. Note that no additional sharpening was performed as again, I was happy with the RAW file capture from the kit lens.

Any constructive criticism/critiques most welcome.

Enjoy, and good luck to everyone entering the competition !

Hi Uttam, the lenses have not come back from the importer - I checked with the dealer on Friday and at this stage there is no word as to whether they got them to work. I will update the post when i hear from the dealer, hopefully later in the week. Regards, Chris.

If anyone is interested - New/Old Stock of Sigma 14mm f/2.8

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to advise that I have located 2 x units (NOS) of the Sigma 14mm f2.8 from a camera store here in Sydney. I tested both lenses with my K-7 and the store's K-30 and both refused to autofocus (although manual focusing was possible with one of the units - the other was jammed solid). I have read of focussing issues with these lenses in other threads on this forum. The list value of each lens is around the AUD$1300 mark, however due to their age (have been sitting on the shelf since 2007 !) the store is prepared to let them go for AUD$550 each, assuming they can get them to work. I was able to change (albeit sluggishly) the aperture using the rear thumbwheel of my K-7 (the lens has an aperture ring with the 'A' setting), but that's about all. The store has arranged for both lenses to be sent to the local distributor (C.R.Kennedy & Co), if they can get them to work then I will certainly purchase one of them. I am expecting a call in the next few days and I will definitely advise the forum members of the outcome. Physically both lenses are in as new condition, and come complete with all (slightly aged) packaging, case, lens hood (2-piece) and rear cap. So if anyone is interested in one of these, keep an eye out for my follow-up or alternatively feel free to contact me via the forum/this post.

P.S. Note that, despite the lens having the HSM designation (see tags), I believe that only the Canon and Nikon mount versions have the HSM motor.

Cheers,
Chris

It's official the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 is no longer!

Hello everyone,

I managed to snap up one of the few remaining Sigma 70-200mm lenses in stock, after checking with a number of local and online reatilers. I purchased my copy through Paxtons Photographics in Chatswood, NSW and a cursory call to some their other branches indicates that they still may have some available. FYI Paxton's stores are located in the Sydney metropolitan area only, although you can purchase online, here is the link - Paxtons |[name]=Sigma-70-200mm-F2.8-EX-DG-OS-HSM-for-Pentax-Lenses---SLR-%26-Compact-System&catalog[product_guids][0]=753362

No movement on price I'm afraid, so I am paying mine off in instalments.

Hope this helps !

Regards,
Chris
