K-7 Noise at High ISO and Firmware Update

I just purchased from Ebay a K-7 with 9k actuations with the 18-55 and 50-200mm lenses in excellent condition.

I bought it because of the many glowing reviews that it received but I came across one afterwards that talked about unuseable images for anything above ISO 800.

The review mentioned that Pentax intended to improve noise reduction above ISO 800 with a firmware update to make images cleaner and more useable. However, none of the firmware updates that I found indicate that this was addressed or improved.

Does anyone know if this was done or is this still the K-7 Achilles heel?

Aside from this limitation, the camera in construction, and features, seems to have the best of some of Canon and Nikon's semi-pro or pro cameras combined.

I do not feel I made a purchasing mistake but wanted some of your insights. Thanks.

Well to make all of you k100d lovers feel a little better, I just sold my Sony A700 semi-pro and bought a used mint k100d because of all the good things I read about it in regard to photos out of the box.

The A700 just could not accurately render reds under its standard settings. My photos of red objects were rendered as more of an orange color. Kept having to tweak the settings to render red close to what I was seeing in the viewfinder. By the time I made the adjustments, the Kodak moment was gone.

I find the k100d renders reds very close to what I am seeing in its viewfinder. I know I can adjust Saturation or do PP if necessary but I have been satisfied with the default.

So the lesson here for me is that it is not always about MP or 1/8000 shutter speed or 40 segment metering but the algorithms that a camera uses for color rendition and white balance. You do not find out about these little idiosyncrasies until you are out in the field playing with settings.

Kudos for the Pentax k100d!

P.S. The only thing that is annoying me now is what looks like a hair or small scratch protruding from the lower left of the viewfinder above the display. No dust specks just the hair or scratch. Tried blowing it out but no luck. Have to learn not to be so picky since this does not effect my images:) lol.

Thanks for the suggestions. Do you happen to know the model numbers of the focus screens for those cameras by chance?

If not, I will look them up.

Good that you still have a k100d leftover being that they seem to be scarce.

K100D, Red, and Color Accuracy

I just bought a mint k100D from Ebay, and overall very happy with it. So much so, that I sold my SonyA700, also used, because it had a lot of trouble interpreting Reds and Greens in my images. The standard setting always yielded more orange than red. This resulted in my having to constantly tweak the settings to get red or close to it for red subjects By the time I made the camera adjustments, the kodak moment was gone.

I know that all digital cameras interpret colors as close to what their software allows. Some better than others. For me, I was on a budget.

In regard to the K100D, I noticed that on the standard setting, it interprets red almost 90-95% as close to what I am actually seeing in the viewfinder. Maybe even more. Just so I am not going crazy, would most of you who used this camera agree. that as far as color accuracy, the camera is pretty good without tweaking the settings?

Can anyone tell me the correct model number for the original focus screen in my k100d?

Is it L-60 or LL-60 or L-80 or LL-80? Cannot seem to find info on it in the manual.

Secondly, have any of you used one that is more effective or helpful?

I heard of KatzEye but they are expensive.

Thanks

P.S. I am asking because mine, which I bought used, seems to have what looks like a hair in the lower left rising above the info display. Probably a small scratch. I tried compressed air but it does not remove it but aside from this, there is no dust specks, and nothing appears on any images that I take.

Would you leave it alone or replace the screen?

K100d Firmware v1.02 snd SDHC Card

I just upgraded a newly purchased used k100d to v1.02 of the firmware which is supposed to allow SDHC cards up to 32 GB.

When I inserted an 8gb Lexar Professional SDHC card into the camera, the image counter remains at 999, and never changes.

However, when I insert a 2gb SD card, the counter decreases each time I take a photo.

I thought the new firmware was supposed to allow you to use higher capacity SD cards, especially SDHC.

Any similar experiences or suggestions? Thanks.

My real name is Marc. I am an amateur photographer hobbyist. I just bought a mint Pentax 100d DSLR with lens, and external Pentax flash from Ebay having read so many glowing reviews about it as far as results right out of the box. I used to own a Pentax Super Program, SF-10, and SF-1 but then sold them to get a Canon, Nikon, and ultimately a Minolta SLR which I still own.

I had several Sony DSLR's but they started to annoy me as far as they could never handle reds and greens well unless I adjusted settings, and by the time I made the adjustments, the moment for the shot disappears. The lesson I learned is that one could talk all day about megapixels, and shutter speeds, and internal processor speed but the key is the ability to process, and interpret what the eye sees. Usually, they do not talk about this in the literature.

I am very happy with the K100d but I just recently noticed some dirt, and a hair fragment in the viewfinder, I always like my viewfinders to be clean so I am not distracted. I tried blowing out the dust with compressed air, which seemed to work, as I did not notice anything further. The next day, I noticed some other specks, and then that hair again. I was going to leave it alone but knowing that it was there, started to annoy me again. So, what did I do? Removed the focusing screen, and blew that out with air. Reinserted, and now all the dust is gone but that scratch or hair like mark is still there at the lower bottom above the info display. No dust or hair marks appear on any images. I know, you will all tell me that I am crazy, and should just leave the focus screen alone. I guess, too much pride in my equipment. I even started to think about buying a new focus screen. I need to keep telling myself, this is not a perfect world:)lol.

Anyway, you have my confession. Redeem me(lol)!. Thanks.
