The lens database here tells a story for each lens. I wouldn't say the K300 4 is not well regarded: it actually gets 9s & 10s in the reviews. It is splendidly built, very sharp, wide open even, & has nice MF ergonomics. There are lots of complaints concerning a lack of tripod mount, but the Ca issue is not consistently experienced by reviewers. The overall mean score is unduly affected by two, very low scores of 1 & 3. In both of those reviews, words like "terrible ca" and "bad fringing" abound, which leads one to believe sample variation must exist to a large degree.

It is worth adding that DSLR sensors play a large role in "blooming" issues. Particularly with the CCD sensors found in many DSLRs does blooming become an issue, whereas CMOS sensors handle the issue much better. The subject can get complex, but there is some good discussion here, with endless more to be found in a Goolge search: OK1000 Pentax Blog: Reducing Purple Fringing and Sensor Blooms |

You really need to decide how much subject isolation you want. I've gotten some great kid shots with my Tamron 90mm, but they are nowhere near as special as ones that can be gotten from faster glass, or from longer glass of the same 2,8 aperture. Good luck

I owned several M-series lenses & shot them on my K20d. As Steve says above, the 50 f/1.7 & 200 f/4 were no problem. However, the most fringing/CAs I"ve ever seen on digital were with the M 300 f/4. It was a beautifully built lens, & I had a mint copy, but could not deal with the fringing/CAs. If you used it selectively, excellent shots were possible.
JT EDIT:My apology, I left Pentax a couple of years ago & all my efforts have been in Nikon ever since. I made a mistake---It was not the M 300 f/4 which was so poor--It was the K 300 f/4. My experience with the M 50 1.7 & 200 f/4 is accurate. |

I like the Sigma 12-24: with version II out, you can pick version1 up in the $300 range. It is virtually distortion free & evenly sharp to the edges on crop sensor. From about 15mm to 24mm filters can be used. It does a nice job with flare though Ca can be a problem, however, the latter easily PPs out. Oh, icing on the cake is that it is splendidly built. :)
I love it because it works on my Fx and Dx bodies. If Pentax ever gets an FFer, you are in business. Here are a few on crop sensor--Good Luck Btw, the Sigma 15-30 is good n' sharp & in this price range too. 15mm 12mm

Okay, for added clarity I will post this shot too. This shot did not have a polarizer on the lens, nor a UV filter. I suggest avoiding UV filters on digital for optimum quality--my 2 cents. Anway, this shot is done on Full-frame sensor, with the 17mm Tamron f/3.5 Adaptall lens. Look at the deformation of color uniformity, ie, the left side of the frame has a much lighter blue than the right side. However, this has nothing to do with a polarizer; rather, it has everything do so with the composition's proximity to the Sun. In other words, the Sun is directly to the left of the composition, just outside of the most left portion of the shot. 17mm on FF is close to 11mm on APS-c.

This shot is @ f/3.5, or wide open on the Tammy adaptall. |

Hi: want to offer my experience with this lens and a polarizer. I used a B & W (not cheap) Linear Polarizer &, even @ 10mm, never had deformations of color uniformity. The sky, especially in areas closest to the sun, will obviously show less intensity of the color blue--but this is visible to the naked eye alone. This discussion was already handled here in the club, with examples provided. I'll post 1 more example here for simplicity.
Sorry, about my late reply. I left Pentax over a year ago, pullled to the Dark side by the allure of full-frame and more lens options. I now have responsibilities to other forums, and I'm still trying to learn all things Nikon, even after a year. Feel free to ask more questions if you feel I can be of help--BEST!

Bumping this amazing piece of glass, with legendary credentials. I've got one, in Nikon mount, and it is made like a work of art, with half stop detents on the A-ring an superb manual focus ergonomics. Do a Google search to learn more about this little baby.

That is much higher than here, where I see new ones going for $2199, though they can be tough to find in stock. However, used ones (particularly given the 150k shutter lives) make a great choice too.

Won this lens on Ebay--was not sure what to expect. Got a chance to do some shooting with it recently and am impressed for what my $12 and 50 cents is doing for me. Here are some shots, following the Ebay screen shot. All shots on D700--No crops Wide-Open @ 185mm

Hi Amama:
I so much miss my days shooting with this lens. When I was active with it, I had good knowledge of all the major, as well as subtle differences between the 2 versions, If you carefully sift through this thread, you'll find discussion on the differences--in depth at times even. Off the top of my memory, so please do not quote me here, I'll try and quickly review some differences, aside from the obvious ones: price--speed--fixed aperture
3.5 version reported to handle flare a little better, though the 4-5.6 is no slouch for UWA. 3.5 versions has an extra A-Blade, given it an odd total, which makes for nice sun flares--distinct points. Reports (I believe SLR, for example) say 4-5.6 is sharper at the long end. Also, @ 10mm (according to Photozone) I believe the 4-5.6 version is better in the extreme borders while the lenses are close elsewhere @ 10mm. 3.5 version reportedly a little better with vignetting and with distortions. Feel free to Google subject and report back here anything you can add tot he discussion. Thanks and Happy Shooting!

Ah. music for my soul Tamia! The ADKs are so beautiful & I have so many spectacular moments spent there. The pics are splendid, as always. BTW, the native Americans believed Jewelweed had medicinal properties, specifically for Poison Ivy--if I'm not mistaken. I think it is still marketed today as a natural remedy. I really hope to make it back to my beloved ADKS soon, but am glad I have you shooting there and showing images here in the meantime!!! :) Thanks Tamia. :)

Hey there Tamia--I haven't been in the ADKs since Foliage time of last year, so this is a real treat for me--thank you! I probably will not make it up there again until this coming foliage season, so PLEASE keep posting when you can. I've always loved your work! Best!
