Housebreaking: Pentax equipment stolen

For anyone who wants to set up a database on your camera equipment, you can use this form as a guideline. Yeah, it's an ATFE form for listing firearms but page 2 is easily adapted for all your photo equipment. Put a copy in your safe, or firebox or safe deposit box or anyplace you know it is protected.

U.S. Veteran's Day

While we celebrate this as Veteran's Day in the U.S., thank you to all the veterans of all countries who took the torch and held it high.

And this for those who cannot be here.

In Flanders Fields by John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

ROFL Been a lot of fights between Navy and Marines there. Of course they were mostly in bars.

I remember some of the things we talked about in my political science classes in college. While she wasn't in office back then, one of my professors considered people like Bachmann as dangerous. When you get to a certain point on the spectrum, either liberal or conservative, people start getting hurt and I'm talking physically. Bachmann is very near that point. She scares me.

I could not agree with you more. Guns are NOT toys and yes, many people do treat them that way (but many do not). And many people mix alcohol with guns just as they do cars which is stupidity in either case. Everybody raise your hand if you've ever had a DUI or even driven drunk. I admit I've done it but thankfully I didn't get caught or hurt anyone.

Unfortunately the "eat the bullet" is way more common than it should be among LEO's but carrying a firearm is part of the job so it's kind of a Catch-22 situation there. Even if you make him/her turn in the weapon at the end of shift, what about when they are on shift and have eight or more hours armed? And what about the personal backup that most officer's, including my brother, carry? How do you keep a LEO from suicide by firearm when carrying a gun is integral to the job. Unless something can be done about the stress of that job, that's still going to happen.

I still go back to my earlier post. We're not going to change each other's minds on the subject so why are we beating our heads against the wall. Yeah, ok I've been laughing and having fun baiting a couple of people but we are still way off subject as far as the OP goes.

If you feel insecure photographing in an area, then di di mau out of there and photograph at the zoo or something. The main thing is to know what is going on around you at all times or as my brother says, "Stay tactical."

The doors were locked but maybe you didn't know the simple fact that car windows will break. lol

Actually the bit about not leaving witnesses comes from a law enforcement source I happen to know. Yes I'm a member of the NRA and quite proud of the fact. Paranoid? I'm not paranoid...wait, what was that? Be back in a minute, I heard a noise. {wanders off muttering about people out to get me doesn't mean I'm paranoid}

Quote your source?

For goodness sakes people, it's simple. If you live in a society that doesn't allow weapon ownership, obey the law. If you live in a society that allows ownership of weapons and you don't want to own one or don't want to stand to arms if threatened, then don't. If you are allowed ownership and you are willing to protect yourself, then do so within the law. Nobody here is going to change any other person's opinion on an issue like this and we are so far off the OP. Just buy a pepper spray and hope if you use it the wind doesn't blow it back in your face.

And anyone who thinks they are in mortal danger when out photographing here in Atlanta hasn't driven on I-75 or I-85 at any time of the day. That will make an atheist pray.

Varkie,
It depends on the state. Most states issue some form of permit for a concealed weapon (Illinois excepted). In some states this means only a firearm and in other states it can be any form of legal weapon. Vermont does not issue any permits and all citizens legally allowed to own a firearm are permitted to carry it. At least one state allows open carry of a firearm without permit but if it is concealed you must have a permit. As to the permit process, it generally requires being fingerprinted and having a background check run at both the state and federal levels. In other words, you are checked out by the state police and the FBI. I have had concealed weapons permits in both Florida and Georgia. In Florida until just recently if you were carrying a concealed firearm, say under a jacket, and the wind blows the jacket open so that others could see the firearm, you could be arrested for openly carrying a firearm in public. This was just changed. Also some states have a "shall issue" policy which means if you apply for a concealed carry permit and you pass all the background checks, the state must issue you the permit. Other states like California have a "may issue" policy. This means that if you apply for a permit and know enough important people, are a politician or Hollywood star, you can get a permit but if you are the average person on the street, good luck because you "may" or "may not" get a permit. Only Illinois denies it's citizens at least some avenue of self-protection with no process at all for any concealed weapon.

Now for the really screwy court ruling. In any city/state that requires registration of firearms with the police, convicted felons are exempt from the registration requirement. This is because a convicted felon cannot, by law, own a firearm and if he/she were to register it, they would be incriminating themselves which is a violation of the 5th amendment.

Oh and regarding Tazers, again it varies by state law.

You can go here for more information.

I understand that Florida has a similar law but it's mainly aimed at scrap metal. Bring in a/c coils, manhole covers, water meter covers or anything like that, you show ID and get paid by check. That would make sense as much copper is stolen these days but sounds like Louisiana passed the law without anybody reading it....kind of like Congress does with most everything they do.

Yes, but is your existence today the same as it was yesterday? For that matter, did you even exist yesterday in another reality? Ray Bradbury may have been on to something when he wrote "A Sound of Thunder."

Well this moron has had three occurrences where carrying a weapon kept him from being mugged or worse. One of the three was partially my fault since I was at a place where in daylight I would have been fine but just after dark was a different matter. Once I was simply going about my daily business and once when I was going to pick up my son I made a wrong turn ending up in one of the worst areas of Jacksonville at that time (he tried to open my car door and I ran the redlight while he was backing away from my 9mm). I'm one of the rough people who stand ready to visit harm upon those who would threaten us, our family or friends but if you want to be one of the sheeple who hope they get out of the furball unscathed, be my guest. Oh and by the way, it's becoming consensus among criminals that leaving a witness is not a good idea.

For those who don't want to carry a firearm, there is this little item called an Asp. It is a expandable steel baton that opens up with a flick of the wrist. Check your local laws however as in some areas this is considered a concealed weapon and would require a permit. I wouldn't attempt to use one against a mutt with a gun but applied to the knee or arm of someone trying to intimidate you, they can be quite effective. Plus breaking a mutts kneecap or arm usually won't get you into near as much trouble (without a permit) as a firearm will. And for goodness sake people. If you are out shooting (photos), think about how much damage you can do with a monopod. Batter up!

CW

I really had to laugh at this entire thread as at another forum I belong to, there is a debate over whether to concealed carry with permit in church.

If I remember correctly, that year at Atlanta was the last time they ran Indy cars here. With the use of restrictor plates at Talladega and Daytona, Atlanta is actually the fastest track on the NASCAR circuit although Charlotte and Texas will argue about that. But you are correct. You can run a Sprint Cup car at Indy and on other tracks meant for open wheeled cars but those open wheel cars have no business on high bank super speedways meant for Cup cars. This type of "big one" is expected at Dega and Daytona in NASCAR but the frame and roll cage of those Cup cars probably weighs almost as much as a complete Indy car

Yep, Brian doesn't have Tony George around anymore to protect him from his own stupidity. After the New Hampshire restart in the pouring rain that wrecked a bunch of cars, Will Power gave Barnhart the double middle finger salute.

Either that or detune the engines to reduce horsepower for these 1.5 mile tri-oval tracks. Las Vegas, Chicago, Kentucky, etc. were designed for NASCAR type stock cars and a 3500 pound full bodied car flying up into the catch fence like that will suffer much less damage than composite, open cockpit car. Carl Edwards went in to the fence that way at Talladega a couple of years ago as did Brad Kesolowski at Atlanta (payback from Carl). Both walked away cussing the other. Indy cars have been too fast for several years now and something needs to be done to slow them down. I'm sure that will happen now. When Dale was killed at Daytona, the HANNS device was mandated and NASCAR began requiring tracks to install SAFER barriers. When Scott Kaletta was killed at Englishtown, NHRA went from 1/4 mile down to 1000 feet to give racers more shutdown room. Sad that it takes a death sometimes to wake up the governing bodies in car racing and from what I've heard, Barnhart has taken a lot of criticism from drivers, fans and owners lately about decisions IndyCars has made.

My sister-in-law has a new crossbow for deer hunting so we are all set there. She can get them close and with a 16 power scope, I can get them at long distance. The attack last night on AMC's "The Walking Dead" happened on GA State Road 20 right by the Atlanta racetrack so I don't think they have spread as far as Savannah yet. BTW, it's a .22 so ammo is about $15 per 500, I've got four twenty-five round magazines and yeah, I got enough. ;)

I've told it before but the class I took was where the instructor asked what we were using and when I said Pentax, he said "Oh, you bought an Edsel." Told him no, I bought a camera, not a myth like his Nikon. We never got along after that although he did borrow my AP with preset lens to demonstrate a point he was trying to make about f-stop. First class I was the only Pentax user. Advanced class I was one of three. Several of the Nikon buyers were complaining about how expensive the VR lenses were compared to the ones they bought. I ask why they needed VR lenses and they explained that. OF course i knew what they were complaining about and then I pretended to be amazed that Nikon and Cannon didn't put their shake reduction in body like Pentax does. Told them how I could use late 50 and early 1960 lenses and still have SR. I did hear a lot of muttered curse words after that.

We've had a really bad zombie problem here in Atlanta for about the last year. In fact, there is an attack being shown on AMC right now that happened about 20 miles south of me. So in anticipation of the zombie apocalypse, here is my latest purchase. It's a Smith & Wesson M&P15-22 with a flashlight on the left rail, green laser sight on the bottom rail and a 4-16X50 scope with either black cross hairs for day shooting and green lighted cross hairs for low light. Only thing lacking is a bayonet lug. Zombies beware!!!!:D

According to an Indy Car spokesman, his injuries were "unsurvivable." From the video it looks as if the car went up cockpit first into the catch fence.

Dario Franchitti said he had driven stock cars (NASCAR) on that track and that Indy Cars should have never been allowed on it. That it was too fast and allowed the cars to run too close together.

Mike, have you read Varley's latest trilogy? Red Thunder, Red Lightening and Rolling Thunder. The first one was described as the novel Robert Heinlein would have written had he lived in George Bush's America under Homeland Security. The second was decent and the third, even though I liked it, was just finishing off the trilogy. Also, they are older but if you haven't read them, Titan, Demon and Wizard are great.
