I finally upgraded my sling strap to something I can trust more (and it's more comfortable to carry the camera too).
I used a Caden Quick Sling Strap (about $7) and OP/TECH USA System Connectors (about $6). So for $13 total I got a "system" which gives me much more confidence when I have something heavy like 80-200 f2.8 attached to the camera. I plan to replace the connection screw for a tripod quick release plate soon.
Maybe somebody could find that useful.

I got my first Pentax K100D and DA 50-200 at the local camera store where I tested both for a bit. I was really pleased with the "feeling" of the camera, grip, controls etc. I was "converted" to Pentax by one of my friend who is a doctor and still working with Pentax medical equipment. She said the company has a great reputation in making HQ optics so I never looked towards other brands actually (now, how silly is that!) and I still have no intention to try anything else.
I got my second Pentax camera (K-5) at the local store also, because it was a great deal. But I hadn't try it just because I was convinced in Pentax quality.
P.S. Oh, and I love that feeling when all Nikon / Canon shooters around stare at the brand name on my neck strap with a bit of concern :)

I had exactly the same choice few months ago when I decided to upgrade my good ol' K100D (which flash didn't work too). First I thought k30 would be the best choice because it's a relatively new model, can use AA batteries (why do I love them?), has better auto focus, video and some other minor improvements. Then I tried it at the store and only then I found some things make me uncomfortable, like relatively small grip, lack of top display, shiny coloured body plastic. For some it won't be a big deal, for me it was so I recommend you to try different cameras yourself and get a feeling.
I ended up buying a k5 18-55wr kit for a very good price and, after selling kit lens, I am more than happy with my choice. It's "that" feeling :-)

Totally agree! And I haven't got your input wrong - you've got a point, of course.
I wonder if you did those pans with no additional camera support - there is no visible Y-axis shift at all!
P.S. I started to discover EXIF data of your Super GT 2014 pans on Flickr but ended up staring at those team girls... :D

Macario, deep inside I knew there should be someboby who tells me using monopod with those lenses it's not as ridiculous as it seems ;)
Well, definitely it's a bit more comfortable and at least monopode will help to keep the constant height/shooting point plus it takes the weight of the camera so all-day shooting would be more easy.

Does it make any sence to use monopod (tripod) for shooting action at 1/800 and faster shutter speed with some "pancake" type primes like DA 70mm or DA 40mm? Two things come to my mind: 1. The shutter speed is fast enough to eliminate possible camera shaking and 2. The physical dimensions (length) of the lens is so small that little vibration won't cause the front glass of the lens noticeably move (opposed to long telephoto lens that has a decent length from the camera mount to the front glass so little camera vibration could cause a big move of the lens).

I use a sling strap because neck straps give me pain in my back and camera hitting objects every time I bend over. This sling strap uses camera's tripod socket and despite I haven't problems with it yet, I'm very concerned about it's suitability of taking a load of bouncing camera and zoom lens. And it's also good to keep tripod socket for (yeah!) mounting camera on a monopod. I am thinking of getting another "connecting point" to the camera and I I've been watching BosStrap videos that looks nice but again I'm worried (call me paranoid) about the one-lug connection. Do you think the single lug of cameras like K-5 or K-3 can take the weight of equipment without possible damage to the camera body? Anybody has positive/negative experience carrying camera all day attached just to one lug?

@lytrytyr: your picture reflects my situation at best. I do shoot martial arts and combat challenges indoor so the action and level of light are exactly the same. You caught a great moment but to me your picture looks too noisy and a bit blurred (yeah, I know what ISO 6400 could be). I personally took a lot of pics that are noisy and not sharp using a K100D with high ISO settings. But what I really want to get is that "sport magazine cover" shot (sighs) or at least I want to "freeze" action. Prefocusing is great when you can predict the key spot(s) for the most interesting moments. I found it difficult to ask a fighter for doing "high kick in that corner, please" ;)
@bassek and Miguel: I'd try DA 70mm for sure, I think it could do the job. BTW, do you think FA 77/1,8 would be a better option?
@lytrytyr: my distance from the action is usually from 5 to 12 meters (16 to 50 feet approx) so people at that distanse are still quite a big target for focus point. Using center focus point there should be no problems (I hope).
@Miguel: of course, I'm posting a shot to give you an idea of what I am talking about

@reeftool: I am looking towards 70-200/2.8's or DA 50-135 and maybe I'll give it a try if I find not expensive one as it would be the special purpose lens I use not so often. And you just reminded me of my manual 58/2 Helios 44-K lens - I think I could play with it too.

Unfortunately I have no chance to try on this lens, I thought about buying it online. Here, at Pentax Lense Review Database this lens were very appreciated and many people mention fast AF. That made me think I can use it for sports. I have another choice and of course result is very important to me so I would look for something better.

Hello everybody,
Please blame me for thinking of shooting indoor (low-light gyms) sports with SMC FA 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens :D
I've been shooting my kid for quite a lot using the DA 50-200 kit zoom. It is too slow for indoor shooting and I decided to get something more appropriate. Discovering many of my sport shots I've noticed an interesting thing - 90% of all pics were made at 90-110mm range. So I thought I can do that with prime which could give me a faster speed, faster AF and (hopefully) better IQ. Considering all of that, I think FA 100 mm can fit quite well because of it's 2,8 aperture, focus range limiter (they say it helps for faster AF) and good IQ.
Do you think it sounds ridiculous to use a prime macro lense for sport shooting? Maybe some of you tried to shoot sports with that lense?
As a note: I use K-5 with monopod and I usually can choose a good spot for shooting or move around as I need.
All your comments (especially stinging ones) will be very appreciated!

Hello Ron, thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience! I'm going to start "updating" my lens collection with "plastic fantastic" DA 35mm (as a walkaround lens and indoor shooting). For "Sport/Action" I use my Sigma zoom at 90-100mm most of time, so based on that I'm leaning towards
FA 100mm f/2.8 macro "a heavy block of a lens". I've read that focus limiter plays a good role for focusing speed and I think 2.8 would be okay for indoor. I have no doubts about DA 35mm, still need to dig more about FA 100mm though.

Hello everybody,
My name is Sergey, I live in St.Petersburg. I've been playing with my K100D and quietly reading this forum for almost 6 years now, so I finally decided to show up myself :lol:
K100D was my first DSLR ever and I've enjoyed it for a long time shooting family, vacation trips and so on. But since my kid is doing Wushu (it's a kind of Chinese martial arts) and taking part in different competition, recently I've been thinking of changing my camera to be able shooting sport in low ligth indoor conditions. I am quite limited in a budget and I don't wanted to pay a lot but still to make a step beyond with a new camera, at least in shooting speed, high ISO and burst mode. So I've been looking for new K50 or used K30, regularly checking Ebay and local auctions for a nice offer. But last Friday I got a message from a local auction that some company is offering a K5 + 18-55 WR kit in "New, open box" condition for $560... and I just picked up the phone and made a deal ;)
No need to say I am more than happy with what I've got. Maybe it was more of emotional decision and I should have been thinking about the "modern" equipment instead, but anyway... Now testing my lenses on a new body and thinking of some fast telephoto prime for sport shooting.
