I LOVE my KP. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy one if you understand the risks. That third control wheel is amazing. The tilt screen is wonderfully useful. Built in WiFi is great. The accelerator is better tuned in the KP than the K-70 but the difference is slight. I’m not sure if the KF wipes out that delta. A battery grip can be nice - but while I’ve owned at least five, I’m pretty sure I’ve used them a combined total of perhaps a dozen times in the field. The KP grips are different and take getting used to. Don’t dismiss it without trying it for a few days or even a week.

Wait. I’m not saying raw is required. I’m saying make the most of the color by underexposing some and set white balance to maximize the colors you do get. Raw is useful in this situation but hardly required.

I don’t understand - you can turn off the screen. It isn’t as simple as hitting info alone. Hit info and then move over to the option to turn off the screen. At least that’s how it’s always worked on past models. It can be done by accident (I know from personal experience).

Raw vs jpeg

I will point out that when I first joined The single in group. I was unable to process RAW because I had a Chromebook so everything I processed was from JPG. This was not an unsatisfactory experience. I find both not processing JPEG‘s and processing from JPEG or raw to be worthwhile depending on the photo. Most of my photos I try to shoot, SOOC, but not everything is possible to do that with.

Since that time I have moved onto using a traditional laptop, and I have found that many of the tools that I used on the Chromebook have become less useful not because they have changed the Chromebook, but the software itself has been dumbed down. I did have some tools for raw processing towards the end at worked on Chromebook, but those tools either no longer work or require monetary investment that I’m not willing to make since I have alternate tools to use now.

Payboo is B&H’s dedicated card. Adorama offers Edge. The Edge program offers either 0% interest over a time period that varies based on the equipment OR 5% off. I’ve done both at various times. They actually sent a physical card to me but online purchases simply know your profile from the account and there’s no entering of card info required. The card isn’t usable anywhere else.

I assume the physical card could be useful in person?

The only concern I’d have on a drop in filter is excessive heat in the part of the lens ahead of that filter.

I would expect that with your lens you have the luxury of using either the K-1/K-1ii or the K-3iii - the latter will put more pixels on the subject at a given focal length assuming that the entire frame isn’t filled on the K-1 bodies. But, given the length of your lens, the corona may fill a lot of the frame even on full frame. Tough choices. In your tests how large is the sun at max and minimum focal length on each? Looking at others past results, what would the corona look like at that size? Given that you have a zoom, the ability to zoom out might suggest you use the lens/camera combo with nearly frame filling during the lead up to the max coverage, then zoom out a touch to grab the shots of the corona. Does the lens perform better at any part of the range than the rest of the range?

Same camera - different lense = HELP!!!!!!

There are a several minor errors in the original post. Lense rather than lens, ml rather than mm, that suggests that the user is less familiar with the gear and might be a non native English speaker. I think perhaps, rather than the DA 50 f1.8 they might be talking about either a manual focus 55 f1.8 or an autofocus f or fa 50 f1.7. If that’s the case, the use aperture ring fix might help as might setting the lens ring to “A” if it is one that has this option.

On the other hand, if this is the DA 50 f1.8, then there could be something wrong with the lens or the camera. I would suggest cleaning the contacts on both.

I would advise you to buy the KF. I own a KP and while it’s wonderful - recently Precision Cameras posted that several cameras cannot be repaired any longer and the KP was listed. I love my KP - and I would have advised it as the choice to make prior to the announcement by precision. I still think it’s a better camera than the KF - but I would be remiss if I didn’t warn you of the situation.

Are you sure the settings are identical? The most common culprit for slower performance is lens correction settings. Try resetting the k-1ii to factory defaults and see if it’s speedier. Make sure you check both cameras setting with respect to this.

As for the screen - is it possible that you hit info and then got into the screen off mode? That’s tripped people up numerous times.

Monochrome filter vs Monochrome sensor

I shot an original k3 and a monochrome converted k3 (same older model) side by side. I used both camera digital filter and DXO to convert color files to mono. The differences were real but subtle. There was more detail in the true monochrome files. There was also additional subtle shading. However, DXO is a poor tool for use on true mono files. It won’t actually process a true monochrome dng file. I had to use darktable and raw thereapee to get real monochrome files and then the subtle differences were a bit less subtle but it wasn’t night and day. In general I found the gains made in my converted k-3 mono were similar to those I converted from my color shots made with my 42mp ff Sony a7riii.

I know that’s not the exact comparison you’re asking about, but I think it summarizes the situation. Digital filter b&w is good, dedicated mono is better. How much that’s worth to you is up to you. You should be able to download sample raw files and play with them.

Examples of both sunset and afterglow shots, click through to see exposure data. Most are 2-3 stops under exposed from what the camera suggested. This is normal as the camera doesn’t have a dedicated sunset mode and doesn’t know what we want to optimize in the exposure.

Post some images straight out of the camera here or on a hosting site. Full EXIF DATA (metadata about the way the camera was setup at the time of the shots will help us understand)

F16 is well into diffraction territory and would soften the image compared to something like f8. But when at f16 I wouldn't expect 1/4 second. That seems far too exposed to get any real color from a sunset image. Also, sunset to me means the sun is visible in the image, afterglow means after the sun is below the horizon. So if you mean afterglow, then maybe the exposure is closer to rational but it still seems off. I definitely wouldn't expect f16 unless there was a foreground element you needed to be in focus on addition to the sun.

Not exactly, but perhaps close. The trinity is the D FA 15-30/2.8, D FA 24-70/2.8 and D FA* 70-200/2.8. Only the D FA* isn’t a Tamron design, but it’s also the only * lens of the bunch. The D FA 70-210/4 is also Tamron but not a part of the f2.8 trinity.

That makes sense. I have the Pixma Pro-100 - make sure you examine how the trays/feeds work. Mine takes a lot of space BEHIND it when the paper feed is opened for use.

Great advice. Also consider how you can quickly acquire the sun in the lens framing. If wearing solar glasses it is possible to use a rifle sight mechanism or a red dot finder attached to the setup to make aiming easier.

I don’t own that printer, and there aren’t instructions on precision u inks website; so I could be mistaken. Generally with other brands the refill process requires using a chip reset device, drillings refill hole, using a stopper in the hole after refilling and thus the OEM cartridges are reusable, albeit not the intended use by the manufacturer. There do appear to be chips and cartridges listed by other brands still available, but I can’t attest to their efficacy. I wish I knew more but there’s less info about your printer than expected.

Raw vs jpeg

I’d disagree with that. There are shots you can’t get with a single exposure. Your eye automatically adjusts as you scan a scene with more dynamic range than it can take in (or the sensor) at a single pass. The same was true for photography using film. You can use it to correct errors - you can use it to expand barriers - you can shoot iso invariant where nothing appears as it will in the final product. Raw is another tool - not using it doesn’t make you better or worse. It’s like deciding to shoot with one focal length for a period of time. The restriction can lead to creative choices that might otherwise be lost. The same can be true of jpg.
