I bought a used DA* 300/4 from another user here and it's just flawless. It may not have the same reach but it produces better pictures.

I've been using the 55-300 since it came out, and it's amazingly good for a consumer zoom. When trying used lenses and so on, it turns out to be surprisingly difficult to find anything that's sharper.

I used to own an M 400/5.6, for instance, and I've had a Sigma 135-400 and (very recently) a 150-500 "bigmos". Some of these do better than the 55-300 in careful testing, but none could get better keepers in real use, except maybe the bigmos, which could just barely do so, offering a tiny gain in proportion to the huge increase in size.
