Clackers' Beginners Tip 93: Broad lighting - a go-to method for male subjects
Posted By clackers

Good morning, all. I think I've got a pretty dysfunctional workplace. On the fourth floor there's a colleague we all call 'The Computer'.

Nothing to do with intelligence. He goes to sleep if unattended for 15 minutes.

There's another we call 'The Golf Ball' - you look for them around the office but they're hard to find.

And in the cubicle next to mine is 'The Hostage'. Whenever we need him to help with a task, he's always tied up with something.

In a previous tip, we noted that many female subjects can like their portraits more if they appear more petite by the pose and by short lighting.

However, there are male subjects who like their subjects more if they actually appear bigger and more imposing by the pose and lighting. Fine, we're photographers, we can roll with that, flattering and enhancing is what we're good at.

This means males can more frequently be posed facing the camera more directly, and more often with broad rather than short lighting.

Broad lighting is where the side of the face closest to the camera is hit by the sun or your flash. Another photographer is providing the fill lighting on the right hand side holding silver foil. I am using the K-1 with my Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art, so this is a wide angle portrait.

Being head and shoulders, there are no hands in this shot, but in others, it's a good idea to make them less awkward by doing something with them - holding or leaning - or put away into pockets or part of crossed arms (which make your subject bigger - popular for photos of athletes). A lot of guys will kind of unconsciously put their hands over their groin like a soccer player defending a free kick, and this gives a real uncertain/defensive feel that undermines any vibe you're trying to get.

To finish with this, there's the story of the boss who walks into the office one morning not knowing his zipper was down and his fly area wide open.

His assistant walks up to him and says, 'This morning when you left your house, did you close your garage door?'

The boss told her he knew he'd closed the garage door, and walked into his office puzzled by the question.

As he finished his paperwork, he suddenly noticed his fly was open, and zipped it up. He then understood his assistant's question about his 'garage door'.

He headed out for a cup of coffee and paused by her desk to ask, 'When my garage door was open, did you see my Jaguar parked in there?'

She smiled and said, 'No, I didn't. All I saw was an old minivan with two flat tires.'

Clackers' Beginners Tip 58: Blue Hour

Good morning all. Question for the community - anyone want to buy a broken barometer?

No pressure.

I'm also in a bit of trouble - I got the words “jacuzzi” and “yakuza” confused.

Now I'm in hot water with the Japanese Mafia!

This week I want to talk about the Blue Hour.

We all know about the so-called Golden Hours, which of course are not an hour but a varied length of time. But preceding sunrise and after sunset are similar periods of what seem to be darkness, but contain low levels of blue/violet light, which is bent and scattered the most if you've ever seen a prism, so is first to appear or last to disappear, and is the reason why clear skies are blue ("Rayleigh scattering").

The potential is there for very moody shots, if you're equipped for long exposures. The pic below is from my K-30 with the Sigma 35mm Art. I think it was 30 seconds.

To finish with, there's the story of Amanda’s dishwasher which quit working, so she called a repairman.

Since she had to go to work the next day, she told him , “I’ll leave the key under the mat. Fix the dishwasher, leave the bill on the counter, and I’ll mail you a cheque. Oh, by the way don’t worry about my dog Spike. He won’t bother you. But, whatever you do, do NOT, under ANY circumstances, talk to my parrot! I REPEAT- DO NOT TALK TO MY PARROT!!!”

When the repairman arrived at her apartment the following day, he discovered the biggest, meanest looking Rhodesian Ridgeback he had ever seen.

But, just as she'd said, the dog just lay there on the carpet watching the repairman go about his work.

Her old parrot, however, drove him nuts the whole time with incessant yelling, cursing and name calling.

Finally the repairman couldn’t contain himself any longer and yelled, “Shut up, you stupid, ugly bird!”

To which the parrot replied, “Get him, Spike!”

1) Pan focus lenses are your new best friends.
2) location location location!
3) Forget that fancy ETTR, Sunny 16 all the way!
4) Never… EVER… lick a lens to clean it. They taste bad!
5) see number 4? Film is worse than lenses.

Hi all,
My lovely 2 yr old daughter has recently gotten into photography - film photography of all things!
However, her images seem to not quite be in focus and I think her framing is consistently a bit off... is there a problem with her camera?
Related picture attached.
Any tips I could pass on would be appreciated!
Thanks and take care!

The extended warranty wouldn't cover damage anyway. A warranty provided by a credit card company or insurance might. Since it is out of warranty you could send it to a repair center such as Advance Camera in Oregon rather than Precision.

Pentax Repair Facilities (Wordwide listing) - PentaxForums.com

DIY repair may be as simple as re-seating the switch in the proper orientation on the switch shaft. If you need parts probably will have to send it in for repairs. USCamera.com might be able to get you parts and sell them to you. DIY depends on if you have the proper tools, patience, skill and experience. Note: once you open the body or remove dieals the weather seals are compromised.

I'd say send it off... pure guess but maybe a $75-$125 repair. I know a shop close to me, but there are probably a lot of places you could send if you call ahead and talk to them. I'd recommend against USPS right now. UPS or FedEx plus added insurance above $100 coverage. Or take a vacation where there's a camera shop :)

Are you shooting straight-out-of-camera JPEG, or raw?

Given the level of body you were and are considering using, I'd heartily recommend you shoot raw and use a good raw converter / processor to work with your files. If you do that, you can profile your camera and lens combo to achieve colour chart accurate rendering, after which you can make any additional tweaks per your preferences. Lens colour and contrast reproduction can have a significant impact on JPEG files, but with profiling and raw files you really can normalise output to a significant degree...

My three amigos

MY THREE AMIGOS

From my film photography days, I have come a long way. My journey could not have been more pleasing an experience. Photography is so much fun as I continue to learn more every day. When you combine my film photography and digital cameras that I have owned, the list is not too long, but respectable. I have owned the following cameras - Kodak, Polaroid, Vivitar, Contax, Ricoh, Zeiss, Minolta, Nikon, Fujifilm, Sony, Olympus, Canon and Pentax cameras.

I have had good experiences with all of the above-mentioned products, both film and digital, learning so much every step of the way. What is so cool about photography is that the learning process never ends and continues to be fun. I truly love photography.

So much has changed and is changing all the time in the world of photography, especially since digital came along. Each year we see new things come on the market. I am pleased with my gear now and have put together cameras and lenses that allow me to have all kinds of experiences with my photography, but my three favorite are My Three Amigos, a K1 Mark ii and two K1s.

The secret of the joy of photography is that you do it in a way that works for you and not based on the expectations of other people. Make it personal and pleasing to you and turn it into a wonderful way to bust stress and create times of peace, fulfillment, and joy in your life.

I use the Pentax K1 mark ii with the HD Pentax-D FA* 50mm F1.4 SDM AW and one K1, wears a HD Pentax-D FA 15-30mm F2.8 ED SDM WR, while the other wears a HD D FA 24-70mm F2.8 ED SDM WR. These are my favorite working cameras for landscape and stills. I also own a Pentax KP and Sony a7iii.

The lenses for my cameras are as follows:

HD Pentax-D FA* 50mm F1.4 SDM AW
HD Pentax-D FA 15-30mm F2.8 ED SDM WR
HD D FA 24-70mm F2.8 ED SDM WR
31mm F/1.8 FA Limited Lens*
HD FA 150-450mm F4.5-5.6
DA* 200mm f/2.8 ED (IF) SDM
ROKINON 85M-P 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens
HD Pentax-DA 20-40mm F2.8-4 Limited WR
DA* 300mm F4.0 ED (SDM)
Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 Ex Dc Hsm Lens*
DA 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR Lens
Sony - FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM Wide-angle Zoom Lens
Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM Lens.

Above all else, I consider the most important thing when it comes to my photography (note I said my photography) is the IMAGE QUALITY of my photos. The best quality comes from my Pentax K1-mark ii, and the Pentax K1s, followed by the Pentax KP (yes the KP slightly outperformed the Sony a7iii in image quality and had less noise and better color rendering). Now that said, I do like my Sony a7iii for events needing a lot of frames per second to capture motion or for video work.
I use my “Pentax KP DSLR” for walk-arounds, not my “Mirrorless Sony a7iii. The Pentax KP truly is a good rival to the mirrorless-camera concept for being smaller, lighter, and compact, while at the same time delivering the image quality I expect - and the icing on the cake is an awesome “Optical Viewfinder” Pentaprism, 100% coverage, 0.95x magnification.

Image Quality - Yes, image quality is where the buck stops! You can have all the bells and whistles, fast everything, priciest, best looking, and all the stats in your favor, or most of them, and in the end, you don’t end up with the best image quality, and if you don’t, what do you have? A bunch of statistics that you can brag about, but not the best photo quality!

When I was 19 years old I had a VW Beatle that I put a Porsche engine in and set it up for the local drag races at the track. It did not have the looks, the specs and not a lot of horsepower that would impress anyone compared to a V-8, but I beat a Road Runner at the drag strip one night. It was all because of the attention I gave my VW to get out of the hole and off the starting line real fast, my acceleration constantly increasing, and reaching top end well before the finish line.
No one thought I had a chance against a V-8 Road Runner. When I lined up to run the race I would get the green light just a little before the Road Runner, because I was in a lower class. When the light turned green and considering how I set up my VW to launch me out of the hole perfectly, and even though my top-end speed was not near that of the Road Runner’s top end, I won the 1/4 mile that night by 1/20 of a second.

Just because some cameras have the specifications that yours does not have does not mean they will produce better images. It is how the specs are used and put together to accomplish a purpose when manufactured and how you use what you have that makes the difference. That is why I use my Pentax K1s and K1 mark ii for stills and landscape and not for sports-events but will use my Sony a7iii to capture fast action. You see, I won with less horsepower and torque, but in actuality, it turned out to be more than enough to win considering all of the other aspects I gave attention to when putting it all together and driving the race.

Is your photography only about getting the approval of other people liking your work, therefore seeing yourself as valuable and a good photographer based on their expectations and positive responses? Or is it because you love photography for what it means to you and your own creativity and do not allow the opinions of others to cause you to set boundaries on your work, therefore locking you into views and expectations that are not yours? Don’t, be yourself! Let photography become a part of your creativity and not a gauge of your value as a person or photographer. Enjoy it because you love it!

I love all five of my cameras and the lenses I use with them! They fill my stable with all I need to meet my style, my expectations of my photography.
The most important element of good photography to me is not the equipment, but it sure helps the photographer if he or she finds the camera and lenses that lets them express and do their thing! One of my best all time photos, was taken with a digital camera that had only 8 megapixels. It needs to be about what has made your journey in photography such a great experience. Photography needs to be an expression of you, not someone else! It is all about how you want to express your photo work with great image quality and being satisfied with the end results while having fun as you travel on your photo journey.

That is why I love my Three Amigos, my Pentax K1s, they have truly become my best friends when I push the shutter button and I like having them around.

It will be here probably early 2020. Wait and see what comes out.
You don't necessarily need really new tech. Most cameras these days have far more features than you need.

I actually think Pentax is outsmarting some of the other players, while also taking advantage of its relatively small size (and therefore lower operating costs) to avoid losing money in a shrinking core market. The company has realized that releasing new bodies every year (or even 2) is not the way to go these days, and it's skeptical about mirrorless, which in Pentax's case doesn't bring anything to the table that a DSLR can't do.

We've seen new tech developments emerging through the GR III and Theta Z1, and it's only a matter of time before we see a substantially updated DSLR to replace the K-3 II. On the other hand, re-spinning the K-1/KP's tech into a K-3-like body would probably not sell well enough to be worth it.

So, to sum up, Pentax isn't going anywhere- but if the slower pace of releases isn't keeping up with your individual needs when it comes to camera/lens hardware, then I'd say it might be reasonable to jump ship. However, this might be a short-term thing, because I think the industry as a whole will follow suit and slow down camera releases in the long term.

Nope, I have no intention of moving away from Pentax. We always think the grass is greener on the other side of the fence; but in reality no.
If anyone is dissatisfied with Pentax, by all means move to another brand; but I've used Canon, Nikon, Panasonic (all top of the line); and am quite happy with my Pentax.

And no; I don't see Pentax fading away. Churning out new models constantly, does not make that brand any better than one that puts thought into a new model, before releasing it.

So, best of luck. We will all still be here, if you decide to return.

Misleading Firmware Upgrade Instructions

I downloaded the v1.5 firmware some time ago, but have put off installing it because I use Linux, and the instructions say "For Windows/Macintosh : k1_v150.zip 8,598Kbytes, zip type. I can shut down and dual boot into Windows if I have to, but it's a chore that I kept leaving till "tomorrow".

But yesterday I settled down to it, and realised from reading the instructions in more detail that the upgrade itself has nothing to do with your PC - the upgrade executable runs in the camera. All you need to do in the PC is to put the executable onto an SD card first. I was a bit annoyed about that, why do they say these misleading things? Reminds me of those bad old days when some websites moaned that you had to use Internet Explorer, and even turned you away if you were not, when actually they worked fine whatever browser you were using (spoofing the browser version if necessary).

The upgrade went fine, straight from v1.0 to v1.5.

Be happy with the equipment you have, and use it to* the best of your abilities.
Camera envy is for others.
Cut down your visit to the forums as unfortunately there is too much negativity there, use the forum for what you registered for; for advice , exchange of ideas, and inspiration.
The "mirrorless revolution" will continue without you , it is ok to dislike evf.
Therefore, bless Ricoh for their commitment to explore and better DSLR.
When YouTube bloggers going crazy about a feature on a new camera, it might be very different,* when experiencing it first hand.
Photography is very diverse, hope is will stay that way.
A camera is a tool, develop your abilities.
Go to see as many exhbitions of photography as you can.
Gr III is tiny 😉
I love my kp even more then before, and thats a good thing. 😊

Bashing Pentax based on a very wild rumor while knowing absolutely nothing about any actual facts. Not nice.

The XT3 is 26MP by the way, while the Samsung sensor from 4 years ago that someone said they are using, is 28MP. So I don't believe these rumors at all.

Also, with each generation of cameras, Pentax is always on the leading edge for stills image quality so I don't think they are not customer focused. As a small player, they are doing the best they possibly can with the sensors that they have access to.

Philosophies/Musings Of Improving As A Photographer

Read, but not too much. Go out and take pictures. It doesn't matter of what.

Photography is not about the subject, it is about the light that falls on the subject.
(This would make a great sig. line.)

Make prints and look at them.

Take your best pictures and file them away and don't look at them for a year.
Look at the ones you think fail and ask yourself why they fail. You will have some obvious answers: out of focus, motion blur, bad exposure, that sort of thing.
I discard them. Off to the trash with them!! Don't worry about technical issues beyond resolving to not do that again.

Soon you will have your failures winnowed down to the ones that take a little more thought to see through. They are in focus, the exposure is reasonably correct, there is no blur except where it should be, but they just don't work.
Ask yourself why they don't work and give an honest answer. And resolve not to do that again.

Eliminating what doesn't work eventually leads to what does work, and you will learn loads by doing it.

After a year, look at the pictures you filed away and compare them to what you are now shooting.

And smile.
