Hmm funny, I have both lenses and haven't really have the time to test it out ... but looking at Mike's photo, make me want to go outside and shoot with that 55mm DFA :)

Thank you, LaHO ... I switched the image to a larger version for your viewing pleasure :)[COLOR="Silver"]

Thank you, LeRolls ...
I found it odd that since using straight from the camera DNGs from Pentax, I've tweaked the color less and less in Post.
Now I wish I can shoot DNG straight out of my other cameras ... :)

Thank you, Thomas ...

Well, I tend to go telephoto then wide-angle & I shoot mostly portraits so I've found this lens is the best in A/FA line-up in term of sharpness & bokeh. I'm lucky that I got a good copy as well ... to me, this 150mm is my lens of choice for portrait, better then 120mm, 135mm LS, 200mm and 80-160mm (I have never try the 90mm DFA yet).
I really recommended this one ... :)

Rob,

Thank you for sharing your experiences on the 645Z with us.

Have you ever tried to shoot with a flash/strobe and using the 2nd curtain sync on this body ??
I was wondering since there is a very little information about this and was wondering if you've 'been there, done that' with it after 10K clicks.

Nice image, Mike ... as always :)

A question to you ... I know you have DFA 25mm as well, why you choose the 35mm instead for this image?
Just want to steal some of your brain, I guess ... :)

I think he might pick the new Hasselblad H5X since he just need to replace the body and keep the Digi-back.
Another thing is, for his line of works (Portraiture & such) Leaf Shutter lenses are always good to have and PhaseOne/Schneider LS lenses sync higher then those of Hassy.

I shoot lots of portraits as well & I choose 645Z and I still use those old Pentax 645 A 135mm LS ... It's a great portrait lens even when the Leaf Shutter only goes to 1/500.
Love it ... :)

Not to hijack the thread ...

Dan, why go to 645Z instead of upgrade your P40+ to an IQ1 or IQ2 backs ?
Seems more reasonable, no ??
The price of 645Z plus lenses (especially those of DFAs) are around the ballpark of IQ140 (with P40+ upgrade), I think ??

I'm just curios ...

Thanks, Mike ... but this one is an old photograph ... I wish to do more landscape now that I have 645Z ... :)

btw, you're in Bay Area right ? ... we're neighbor, I guess :)

Thanks, grhazelton ...

This photo was taken in Bristlecone Pine forest in White Mountains in Inyo County in Eastern California.
The fact of being in high altitude area, clouds also forms differently, same with the sky color. it was deep blue.

It was almost mid-day where the light is less interesting. The tree itself hold less interest in me ... not until I saw those beautiful clouds formation. Winds move the clouds really quick, I made a dash to this spot, knowing that with my 165mm lens, I could frame the tree just enough to include the beautiful clouds.

It was a very difficult negative to print, specially the highlights but I managed to get this one, slightly alright .... :)

itshimitis,
I think you might be right about the price of the new LS.

And having read the other thread about the 'not so very good/fast' customer service from Ricoh/Pentax ... I hope they will step it up a few notches on that matter as well ... :)

My Wish List for 645Z

I have the Z for about 4 weeks now and so far, I really enjoy the camera & it's performances for the kind of photography that I do (Outdoor Portrait & Landscape).
It produces beautiful files with dynamic range that I've never seen before from shooting 35mm FF. Shooting with lenses ranging from FA 120mm, A 135mm LS to FA 150mm so far, the low sync speed hasn't bother me at all as I always carry a set of ND filters with me on every shoots.

However, there are some knick-knacks that I wish I had in 645Z ... or future generation of Pentax 645 Digital bodies for that matter.
Here are few from me :
1. Higher sync Speed or some set of new Leaf Shutter lenses ...
2. Touch screen back LCD (like Phase One IQ series) and shorter time delay when viewing the image in the back LCD.
3. 2nd Curtain Sync (is it the same with 'Trailing Curtain Sync' in the Z? if 'yes' how to activate this mode ?)
4. Accurate exposure & data when switching Aperture and/or Shutter Speed with the Aperture Ring in most FA lenses.
5. Better placement of back button AF for Portrait orientation.
6. When I shoot with Nikon 35mm, while using flash, I could disable the flash by simply press of a button - I wish the Z had this neat feature.

Those are some of what I can think of right now ... few of them could be fix thru Firmware Updates and I've heard rumors that there are some new Leaf Shutter Lenses coming our way. Let's pray that they are not cost us an arm and a leg ... :)

What your Wish List, folks ??

Well, this is not a street photography but I think it could be a portrait indeed ...
645Z is a great camera for portraiture ... even without lines of Leaf Shutter lenses.

What do you consider to be the sharpest Pentax 645/67 lens in your kit?

Like most folks here, I agree, I think 120mm is the sharpest (in my system). I do like the quality of images I've good from from it.

Since I like to shoot wide open for that shallow DoF, I also like the fact that 150mm can go to F/2.8 ... now I wish 120mm could go that wide ... :)

note;
I have no fund for DFA 90mm - that is the new king in town so I've heard ...

The wait & also the repair price are just too much for me ... specially that lens is a new gen. Pentax DFA/DA. Unless I dropped it or stupid stuff like that, it should stay in great working condition for long. And also, if it's less then a year, repair/exchange should be free, IMHO.

aeros,

I'm so sorry about your mishap with your 25mm DFA. I bought 645Z a few weeks ago. Pair it with a few FA lenses (75mm, 120mm, 150mm and 80-160mm), the Z is great (so far ...).
However, reading about all these bad rapports about the system, lately I'm starting to doubt the system myself especially their Customer Service.

I hope you'll find a more suitable way out for this unfortunate event with your system ... I hope with a good amount of 645Z sales, Ricoh Pentax will provide us with better, more professional Customer Services in year to come ...

This is correct ... but there are other advantages to Leaf Shutter lenses that can sync to faster shutter speed as well (using in combo with those fast duration strobes)

I watched that tutorial too and was bumped when they switched with 5Dmk3. Otherwise, it'd be the first tutorial using 645Z. CreativeLive should do better logistic prep. on that ... oh well

So, why are new pentax lenses so expensive?

normhead,

Maybe what OP means is the price of all these new DFA lenses (25mm and 90mm) and those soon to be announce zooms compare to the available & affordable FA lenses on the market right now.

To OP - even though I agree with you of the hi-price DFA lenses but actually they are in-line with the other MF lenses of those Hasselblads & Phase One/Schneider.

Have you ever check the price of Zeiss Otus 50mm for FF 35mm camera ? :)

645Z oddity

Hey folks,

I got my 645Z a few days ago and now I'm trying to familiarize myself to it's layout and menus.

So here are my newbie questions;
First, using back LCD - I can't seem to get the zoom-in and out to work in Live View mode. It works during image preview via Rear e-dial but nothing in LV.

Second, the body that I've got uses AWB as default. When I change the WB to something else, it always goes back to AWB when I turn the camera ON again. I have a very limited knowledge with Pentax's menu. Do I need to put this WB selection in the User mode or else ?

I hope someone could help me shed some lights on this ...

Thank you,
Alfie

Hi everybody,

After few weeks of tinkering in & our Pentax Forums, I decided to join in. Seems like a good environment to learn & grow with a lot of great folks around here.
As of now, I'm waiting for my new 645Z to come (on-transit) via UPS. Tell you the truth, I can't hardly wait ... :)

During film days, I used & owned Pentax 67 & 645Nii for a period of time and really enjoy both cameras. I have drown to the aesthetic & look of Pentax 67 and came from 35mm, 67 seem an easy jump.

Now, I can't wait to go back to Pentax again. Got some of the A & FA lenses thru Ebay already. Selling a major part of my 35mm DSLR gear to fund the move and ready for the new beginning with 645Z ... :)
