My "new" (to me) K-01

I love my K-01 and use the collapsible HD PENTAX-DA 18-50mm F4-5.6 DC WR RE zoom on it (the HD version with the hood, not the standard kit version). The results are far better than with the 18-55 DA zoom, and the compact nature of the lens when collapsed is more in keeping with the K-01

A traditional past time of mine at this time of year is to scour eBay looking for bargains, and I certainly found a good one for fellow Q owners.

SRS are selling the 05 Telephoto lens for just £15 delivered. I already have more cameras and lenses than I really have time to play with, but at that price it's impossible to resist!

Pentax Auto 110 lenses for the Q

I love the lenses. If you want manual focus lenses on the Q they are perfect - they are tiny and they are smooth to focus with a decent throw (unlike some fo the AF K mount lenses). Full size Pentax K mount lenses may ultimately get better results, but to mind the tiny Q is no longer tiny and balanced with them in place. Better still, if you look out for a full Pentax 110 kit you can pick up the lenses for buttons as for some reason the lenses seem to make more on eBay sold individually than as a full kit with the camera.

You'd need to use a step down ring, but looking at the sample images any vignetting you might expect probably wouldn't show up.

As far as I'm concerned it's a bit academic really - at £170 there's not much danger of me hitting the 'Buy It Now' button!

Stumbled on easy way to add apertures to 110 lenses!

Holy thread revival BatMan! I've just picked up another set of Pentax 110 lenses including the 70mm and a Soligor 1.7x teleconvertor. Rather than play around with the ring binder reinforcement rings that I used on my other set, I'm going to try a set of these aperture rings to see how the lenses respond to stopping down. The thing I like about the 110 lenses, apart from their size, is the long smooth throw of the focus ring which is ideal for fine tuning the manual focussing.

Funny you should say that because I took a look l ast night and came to the same conclusion, but then I noticed an option at the top right of the screen to display in English (there's a little drop down arrow next to some text at the very top right) :). I still couldn't see what the shipping was though. Having said that, other sites I've bought from recently show the shipping as the next step in the checkout process. Shipping from most Hong kong eBay sellers is very cheap but personally I'd rather know what I'm going to have to pay before committing to buy.

Anyway, a quick look on eBay found a set in blue from a UK seller for £15 including postage. I would have preferred white to match the Q, or black to match my DSLRs and Canon G9, but for that price I live with the colour.

Why the pricing inconsistency

Many sellers will raise their price to a totally unrealistic level if they are out of stock - their price then returns to market value when they get more stock in. A bizarre practice at first glance, but it saves them the time and effort of writing a new listing.

My two tips would be get a decent tripod and get a wireless remote. You can get an aftermarket wireless remote for a couple of quid/dollars on eBay.

You can use two CRV3 bateries as an alternative to using four AA batteries, and of course you can use rechargeable versions of both types of battery. My K-100D came with an aftermarket battery battery grip that has a built in rechargeable battery. I've not had it long emough to comment on battery life so far, but if it proves to be poor I think I'd go for a pair of rechargeable CRV3 batteries rather than rechargeable AAs.

I think you'd get a better response to this question over on the DLSR section of the forum - there are quite a few K-100D users that post there, and other older Pentax DSLRs aso use AA batteries.

There is an excellent thread pinned at the top of the Q forum for adapted lenses - click here It's well worth a look and there are lots of sample images.

As far as a DSLR is concerned I guess it depends on your budget, the features that are important to you and your expectations. I have a K500 and love it, although some critics berate it for missing one or two features. Moving up the range there is the K50 which is well regarded for the money. HOwever, you don't have to go to to the expense of a new DSLR if you can't afford one. For example, I wanted a backup camera to my K500 so I recently bought a secondhand K-100D with the 18-55mm kit lens for well under £100 from eBay. It's only got a 6mp sensor, doesn't have live view and doesn't shoot video, but none of that bothers me and I think the results from it are excellent, especially for what it cost me! The big advantage I find with the DSLRs over the Q and other compacts is the lack of shutter lag. Obviously DSLRs will have a much bigger sensor than the Q and that, in my opinion, is far more important in terms of image quality than the number of megapixels a sensor has.

I would go for the fisheye to start with - it's relatively cheap (I got a new one for about £70 on eBay), and way cheaper than getting a decent proper fisheye for a DSLR. See how you get on with manual focussing (because the fish eye is a manual focus lens), and if you're OK with it you can start looking at adapted lenses.

As far as adpated lenses go I would recommend the Pentax 110 lenses with suitable convertor - they are small and light and give great picture quality when you do the very easy 'ring binder' mod to stop down the aperture. They're also cheap, as is the mount adapter.

Alternatively, or additionally, get an adapter to use SLR lenses on your Q. Something like a 28-80mm zoom, or similar, will effectively act as a telephoto zoom on your Q. They are cheap and in plentiful supply oneBay. With any adapted lens you will have to focus manual, but I found manual focus lenses easier to focus than using the small manual focus rings on autofocus lenses. I would recommend you stick with Pentax for your DSLR if you start up a collection of manual focus lenses. Other camera makers have their anti-shake systems built into the lenses themselves but Pentax has it built into the body. This means that you can benefit from the antishake with older manual lenses.

I would guess one has an aperture control and one doesn't - if you want to post links up to the adapters you're looking at somebody should be able to confirm.

Non-Q Autofocus Lenses/Adapters?
Posted By 35millimeter

As far as I am aware there are no adapters that let you retain autofocus, or even automatic control of the aperture for the exposure, so you will end up with manual focus and manual exposure. I have a PK to Q adapter that has a tripod mount and an aperture control. The aperture control allows you to focus with the lens wide open and then stop down to the aperture selected on the lens manual aperture control ring. If you're going for DSLR/SLR lenses I would personally recommend that you choose one that was designed for manual focussing in the first place - I find manually focussing autofocus lenses less satisfying, and there is no way to accurately select an aperture on the DA lenses.

Don't forget the crop factor due to the small sensor size - take your focal length and multiply by approx 5.5 to get the equivalent 35mm focal length. For that reason you'll find a standard full frame zoom equates to a pretty powerful telephoto zoom on the Q.

If you're looking for new lenses to try (as opposed to looking to utilise and DSLR/SLR lenses that you already have) then I would recommend you try the Pentax 110 lenses via a suitable adapter - I find them more in keeping with the ethos of the Q and have been delighted with the image quality in comparison to the standard 02 zoom, especially when stopped down using the ring binder reinforcement technique.

You'll also find a 'sticky' to adapted lenses at the top of this forum that is particularly useful. The only downside is that it will do your wallet no favours when the bug bites and you end up shopping for new glass!

If autofocus is important to you a few members have bought the 06 (15-45mm) zoom and have been very pleased with it.

The Holga arrived today so I had a quick play with it. The focussing ring is rather stiff making focussing quite dificult as each attempt to twist the focussing ring twists the camera body with it! I imagine it will probably loosen off with a bit of use. This picture was taken into the light which is not ideal - the leaflet with the lens recommends having the light source behind you. The picture is quite soft and I think it gives a nice effect.

Nice looking lens, and quite unusual in that pushing it forwards zooms out rather than zooming in. Among the 110 lenses it was also unusual in that it was made of metal rather than plastic (as was the 70mm lens) which, apparently, put extra stress on the mounting flanges due to the weight (in some cases of clumsy mounting/dismounting the flanges actually broke off).
