I like your list because I am also an NX shooter and I love the NX60 and NX30. I'd like to get the NX85, but that's just a ton of $$$ to spend on a focal length I don't use often. I was also wondering if you've shot the PL 45/f2.8 on m43? I own and shoot it on a Panny G2, and I feel as though it picks up slightly finer details than the NX60. On the other hand, it gives less DOF control and its bokeh is not as nice as the NX60 bokeh. My opinion is that color rendition between the two lenses is dead even.

Cheers,

TTC

Best Buy selling Pentax

I hope this is true. The last time I was at my local Best Buy Canon, Nikon, and Sony all had huge displays and there was nary a Pentax body or lens to be found.

Sony really, really seems to be pushing hard to get the NEX in front of people if one can judge by the scale and elaborate nature of their display.

woof-

Those are some terrific shots!

I strongly considered getting the LX5 before picking up my EX1, but for me the slightly faster lens on the EX1 won out for me.

I vote for keeping the K10D and investing in new glass. You can go to Flickr and see the remarkable shots that people are still getting with their K10Ds in this day and age. Thankfully, one of the beauties of the Pentax system is that you can get a tremendous quantity of good glass for your $1000. You simply cannot do that in Canikon land. The huge optical bang-for-your-buck that you get with K-mount is why I got into Pentax and why I will continue to stick with them.

I noticed the OP mentioned low light shooting, so I would recommend at looking into one of the fast 50mm lenses available for K-mount. I went with the Sigma 50/1.4 because it is sharper wide-open than the Pentax FA50/1.4. The obvious tradeoff is the Sigma's size.

Purchasing either one of those lenses would leave enough left for the DA55-300, and that would be an excellent compliment to the kit lens. It would also provide better quality at the long end than the 18-250. If one found the right prices on the 50mm and the DA55-300, they could probably move into the DA 16-45/4 to give better image quality in the wide and standard zoom ranges.

Handling Differences between Pentax and other brands

I own a Kx, K10D, and a K20D, and I can state unequivocally the handling of all these bodies destroys that of the Canon Rebel XS I am stuck using for macro photography at work. I find it completely awkward to make the most basic exposure changes on the XS without lowering it from my eye. Based on the awkward handling and poor build quality I cannot fathom how reviewer after reviewer has given the XS and its siblings such high praise.

On the other hand, I will say that the Canon 60mm EF-S f2.8 Macro is a nicely built, fast focusing, easy handling lens, though a bit largish in size compared to the D-FA 50 f2.8 Macro.

Personally I'm getting tired of all the irrational hype surrounding Fuji. I'm sure their new sensor will be very good, but I doubt it will be some kind of world-beater. The claim that they have some magical insight into sensor production over Nikon, Sony, and Panasonic also does not ring true to my ears.

Low-cost Sigma Lenses: Stay away? Or go ahead?

Get the Sigma 50-200mm. It is a terrific low-cost lens, and it blows away the Pentax 50-200. My Sigma was destroyed by immersion, but I got some fantastic shots from it before that point.

I would stay away from the NX system. Samsung talked a good game about being a serious player in the mirrorless space, but their actual conduct has turned the otherwise promising NX system into a joke.

Look for "AccuEvolution" low-discharge NiMH AAs on eBay. They offer similar performance to the Eneloops at a lower price. I've shot them in my Kx using live view at temps around 35F with no trouble at all.

I've had great luck with low-discharge AAs bearing the "AccuEvolution" brand name. I get them no problem from a terrific eBayer in WV with the handle of "bearwobble".

The AccuEvolution AAs seem as solid as the Eneloops, but they don't seem to have the same brand name markup (yet)!

Wow...that is an impressive looking piece of glass.

I really hope that Olympus is able to stick around and figure out a way to release their awesome 4/3rds lenses in other mounts. I know you can get an adapter for m43, but it would be so cool if they could convert those monsters...

I've heard that Nikon's dSLR plants are in similar straits.

Agreed.

The DA* lenses should be much, much more prominent than they are. Pentax should also open the lens section with a single page that lets you navigate to any of the lens families on offer without having to scroll down a ton of pages.

OTOH, I did like the prominence of the 645D on the index page. Pentax should take a lot of pride in it and let people know they have a big megapixel body on offer.

In Samsung's favor I'd also add their terrific AMOLED screens and beautiful, well-organized, easy to navigate, legible, and understandable menu system. Compare the NX menus to the Panasonic MFT menus...Samsung's are significantly better in every respect.

Well, I actually like the 18-135 WR a great deal. It is constantly on my Kx or K10.

As for Samsung, B & H just emailed me to let me know the NX 60mm Macro is in stock, and that is very welcome news!

Yes, that is true.

My personal preference is for underpromising and overdelivering, which is what I hope Pentax is able to do.

I can't stand overpromising and underdelivering, which is what Samsung has done with their 2011 lens roadmap.

Sigma 50mm f1.4 EX DG HSM ?

Alright, here are the promised Sigma 50mm f1.4 samples. The subject is something of an unusual event since it was a trail lit by 700 jack o' lanterns carved by local schoolkids. That means I shot my Kx with the Sigma at f1.4 and ISO3200 with shutter speeds ranging from 1/15 to 1/350. Autofocusing worked surprisingly well under the conditions, and live view saved my bacon on a couple shots. Post-processing in Aperture was extremely minimal. I don't feel as though there was much to fiddle with in terms of NR, sharpness, or contrast.

Terrific post!

I do have to disagree with regarding to the idea that Samsung "gets it" when it comes to lenses. Yes, they have put forth tremendous roadmaps for 2011 and 2012, but it is frustrating and disappointing that they have delivered almost nothing on their 2011 lens roadmap. Only now, 10 months into 2011, are we seeing limited availability on the 16mm, 60mm, and other items.

As for Pentax-Ricoh, I really hope they get back on the horse when it comes to lens production. The DA* are all impressive pieces of glass, and I am quite enamored with my 18-135 WR.

For me, it is probably the Takumar 135mm f2.5 I got for about $20 or 30. You can stick a 1.4x TC on it and still get ridiculously sharp, nicely contrasty captures. Second is probably the "plastic fantastic" FA 28-70mm f4 zoom. Third is probably the Pentax A 50mm f2.8 1:2 Macro which I got for a song in 2004. You won't find any deals on it these days because people have realized what a stunning lens it is.

This is an absolutely incredible opportunity for Pentax/Ricoh to make hay in the dSLR and MILC market segments.

Let's also not forget that Olympus appears to have some critical financial issues that will keep it from bringing much to the table in the near future. Panasonic seems alright, but they also seem unable to produce any m43rds sensors with improved noise and dynamic range performance. Canon seems to be out of new and exciting ideas, but they are still in very good financial shape. As for Samsung, I feel as though their NX system is a bad joke in that it has huge potential, but they are completely failing to deliver on it. Exhibit A is their complete inability to deliver any of the lenses on their 2011 roadmap. Exhibit B is their relentless pimping of the idiotic, over-priced, high-noise, small sensor hell known as the MV800 over the NX200 and new NX lenses.

I think there is at least one Sigma 105 on KEH and one on eBay right now.

I have one, great lens. It's very sharp and I like the handling and build quality a bit better than the D FA 100 Macro I used to own.

It gives me no reason to try the similar Pentax or Sigma lenses.
