Need a new lens for my K5

I think I want to keep the lens costs down, due to the fact that this is my first step back into DSLRs from mirrorless (M43, my OMD EM5 decided to start doing pure black shots randomly and the Olympus engineers couldn't find anything wrong, AND charged me to fix a lens that wasn't broken!) and the body was so cheap. When I sell the M43 stuff (OMD EM5, 12-50mm, 45mm, 20mm) I can use that to go towards any more expensive lenses, plus, trying to slide a £300+ purchase past the missus when we're saving for a garage conversion might be dangerous to my health!

The 18-135 sounds like a good walk-about lens, and I'll look into the 21mm. I do like primes! As for LBA, I've already got Warhammer Buyers Addiction (stupid bits of plastic!), to go with Video Games Buyers Addiction, so what's one more addiction between friends?!

I do have manual lenses from my days with a cheap Pentax SLR clone (Centon), which includes a xx-270mm, and a 135mm pentax SMC, but it seems... difficult to manually focus without say a split circle to use to focus with, and no focus peaking either to help out.

135 sounds good. It's about £200 which isn't too bad. The 35 sounds good too. I'll give it a try. Shame there's no shops that sell pentax by me otherwise I'd give it a try out!

Hi, bought a cheap K5 body and a 50mm SMC DA 1.8 lens which is nice but I am missing the shorter end of a kit lens at times. I want to get a new lens and am not sure what to go for, is the original kit lens ok or do a third party make a better lens? Is there a go to lens people go for when they grow out of the kit lens?

Phew. I can swap out my camera for this one now and carry it around with me. And buy some new lenses. And a strap. And and and and....

Thank you for everyone's help with this, I do appreciate it.

Ok, that sounds re-assuring.

it just seems that I nailed the focus when aiming the shot, but it doesn't seem right when I look at the picture.

That's three more, I've taken today after the firmware update.

Is there anything I can do, to test or make sure that I'm not missing the focus?

Here's some of the shots. The lens is a 50mm DA, these are firmware 1.01.

Not good at linking them it seems. Tried to link but they came up as question mark boxes.

Hi, sorry about this, I've been so busy at work I've not had chance to do anything. I've now got some shots, which I'll upload and hopefully it's just my eyes, rather than the camera.

I've not updated the firmware on it yet, will do that, and will upload the shots, (comparisons between manual and automatic focusing) too.

I don't know if it's my eyes, or the camera. If it's the camera, I need to fix it, if it's my eyes, hey no-one can fix them!!

Just picked up a k5 from the Photography Show at the NEC on Sat, second hand from London camera exchange. No charger so the price was £99. Seems to have a 14k shutter count too.

I bought the 50mm prime too so I could try it out (only have a few manual k mount lenses and none with me at the show!) But after looking at the images it feels like they are a tad blurry when zoomed in. Just not sharp as I would expect from my old OMD em5. This could be down to user error (most likely) but i do wonder why the camera was so cheap, the person trading it in at the show must have got maybe £20 max for it!

The other thing is there seems to be dust on the sensor and in the viewfinder. Ive given the mirror a quick flick with a lenspen brush so i think its on the focusing bit or the pentaprism.. How difficult is it to clean this?

I suppose lastly is there any checks I can do to ensure its all ok? The item has probably only had a quick check to ensure it is ok before going out to sell.

Ok one more questiom... are there any must have accessories for the k5?

I have an OMD em5 which is not reliable due to shutter issues and had gone to the show to look for other cameras. I ended up heading to the LCE stand to look at a KS2 but saw the K5 and bought that instead. Hopefully i made the right decision!

Shooting in Norway (northern lights) equipment help!

Hi, we are heading on a cruise around Norway to see the northern lights and after research I'm thinking my current kit* might not hack it.

I guess I need WR on the camera which is why I am looking at pentax, their range are normally weather resistant. Im now trying to work out the best yet cheapest way forward, as unless I replace all of my existing kit (is an option!), I want this to be a temporary camera for the holiday and sell on, unless I fall in love with it. Because of this I'm trying to get a really cheap body and kit, and maybe an older manual fast wide lens.

I'm not seeing any cameras that cheap in the UK, the k50 new is around £299 (red with kit lens) second hand is not much less. The k30 is stupidly priced on eBay, is it really worth £700- £1000+?! Past that, I have no idea about pentax or what cameras are decent, hell my film camera was a pentax clone, a Centon k10!

I guess I'm looking for three fold advice here. Is there a pentax worth ditching m43 for, in which case I can expand my budget, but I want wireless and spinney rotatey lcd panels. If not what is a reliable, cheap pentax dslr that will withstand the arctic circle? Also if we do just get a cheap camera for the trip, what would be a fast wide lens recommendation?

I am asking a lot, and I am sorry, just I'm panicking about what to take, and I know if I take my current camera in its condition the shutter will stick on all the good shots. It doesn't help that I kind of want to start fresh too.

Current kit:
Omd em5 with a shutter issue, (black images every so often) some m43 lenses (20mm, 10-50mm kit, 45mm) a fuji x20 and a pentax q (01, 06 and some manual k lenses)

i noticed in a youtube review of the various Pentax Q bits, that Blunty had a custom black and white setting. Does anyone know what it is, or failing that, have their own custom black and white settings they would like to share? I have one space left on my quick dial for something, and while I love the black and white contrast setting, sometimes it's a tad harsh for what I want it to do.

From a quick play, it seems all good, needs updating (firmware 1.0), and looks like the LCD screen is a little sluggish when moving the camera around, but so far so good. I need to do the firmware update, and then set the camera up.

Are there any setup guides? Suggestions for the front dial, etc?

I'd imagine the original Pentax Q in a sock would make more impact than the Pentax Q10/Q7 :P

Hi, Just wanted to update the good people who gave me advise.

I have a second hand Pentax Q with prime winging it's way to me tomorrow. Looking forward to using it on my lunch break! (must remember to take an SD card!)

I was between an Fuji X10 (I love range finders) and the Q, but the thing is, for £110, it is (I guess! *gulp*) throw away money for what seems like a very fun camera. If the worst gets to the worst, I can pass it to my GF to use, or sell it back on for the same price I paid for it (£110).

Now it's a mad dash to get accessories. Case/screen protector/several hundred batteries etc! :P

Is there any difference between the one in the original post, or one for a different camera mount, used with an adapter?

I have an EM5, and was tempted to pick one up for that, if I can slap it on the Pentax Q too, that would be a nice two-for-one purchase.

Be interesting to see the price, and how it affects the Q7. It is beautiful though, something about the red/black one appeals to me more than the coloured Q10/Q7 models I've seen.

So to verify, the camera is exactly the same as a Q7 in all respects, but is now 'symmetrical'.

On that page, there's a part under news saying PENTAX Q-S1 Color Simulator. If you look, it looks like front panels are interchangable. Would the "knob" be a way of locking them onto the camera?

I am still reading into this and researching, but it's just getting over the top. There was an article about psychology (and camera purchasing), with two camps identified, a maximiser, and a satisficer. The Maximiser is someone who will constantly compare, research past the norm, and then compare after purchasing, never feeling happy with the purchase, whilst the satisficer seems, I guess (based on the name) satisfied with a bit of research, walking into a camera shop, and walking out with a camera.

I'm guessing from it, I'm a maximiser. Not good.

I'm trying to keep my budget as low as possible, and as I want an 01, I think I might try and pick up a Q, as the cost of a 01 lens is around £120, while a Q with 01 is around £130-ish. £15 for a body that I can then eventually resell, if I get the Q7 abroad, plus I have the 01 (and the later Qs come with an 02 lens).

I think that's the best route. If it goes pear shaped, I imagine it will resell for the same amount.

Wonder if it allows the front dial to be swapped over, from left to right, for single hand action?

This is the one worry I have. I love the idea of having a fun camera, but if it's not going to take that great an image, or the OOC shots need considerable work (I can't PP to save my life, I suppose it's a skill to learn, but I've always wanted to be able to get away from the whole "take ten shots, spend ten hours to make them presentable" feel), then I'm a little unsure.

I'm not an 'pixel peeper' (I think that's the correct term) or some image snob, but if this is to be my everyday camera, I don't want to think "gawds, I wish I had taken my other camera instead) each time I take a shot.

Still, the pictures I've seen on this forum (on my phone, and on a 11" chromebook screen) all look very good, if not excellent.

The Q7 and a lens puts it over my original budget of £200 a little, which the MX-1 still fits into.

Thanks for the replies. It all seems positive so far. I am going to try some hands on with the MX-1 today (no shops by me stock the Pentax-Q) just to take that out of the equation.

If the Q7 really is head and shoulders above the Q/Q10, then I'll try and chase that body up from Ebay. I know that there was an 02 that was the same colour (yellow/black) but not sure where to pick them up from, I'd rather have my angry bumblebee in one piece if possible!

I think the thing I'm worried about is the quality of the results. Most of the shots from this forum look amazing, but I am not sure if they are OOC, or PP'd. I intend to either use JPEG OOC, or learn to do PP, because I am dire at it, and have no idea what I'm doing.

Suppose it could be a learning experience too, but not one I'd rather have forced on me.
