I agree that the size is very useful and a refreshing change, i'm looking forward to travelling light.

I do have a little niggle in the back of my mind about clients on shoots and wondering why I'm using such a small camera. Sounds ridiculous but I'm pretty sure it will happen.

Good to hear you liked the post.

I rarely print anything larger than A4. The only thing I can think of that I have printed larger than A4 is a landscape of beautiful Glencoe, which was 3 frames shot on the 5d III and stitched together. It looks great A1 size in my office. So I'm really in no position to comment on large prints from the 645Z or the A7RII I'm afraid.

In terms of the cost/weight balance, if I personally had to choose one or the other - a Sony body and a three of the Zeiss primes seems a more attractive proposition, especially given what I predominantly shoot (portraiture). That is a difficult choice to make, they both offer so much. Are you able to hire them both for a weekend? I think it would be worth the outlay.

I've seen a lot of complaints about the user experience on the Sony A7r II, as echoed by Danielduarte above. Personally I've not really noticed these. For the most part any niggles I've had I've put down to the usual switching from one system to another. Although the over sensitive EVF eye shut off is a real nuisance and something I hope Sony can patch through firmware.

I've recently taken hold of the new Sony A7r II and thought i'd have a go at a little side by side comparison with my Pentax 645Z. Also threw the Canon 5dIII in for fun.

Pretty interesting results. It's no double blind precision trial, but if you were wondering how the Sony compares in real world applications have a look - Sony A7r II vs Pentax 645Z vs Canon 5dmk III ? | Photographer Gareth Iwan Jones |

That's fab, thanks Royce. I don't seem to have the 'ring that threads onto the body' that you've described. I probably lost it whilst switching between the eyecup and a right angle finder. You can't see a part number on the thread ring can you?

Many thanks,
Gareth

I've had the pleasure of trying to deal with Pentax support again. 1 year almost to the day since last years problem, good to see they're still as useless as ever. I'm astonished at how bad their support is....

That's the moaning out the way. Anyway....

I'm hoping a good samaritan who owns a 645z could help me out with an eye piece problem. For some reason mine has stopped attaching securely and falls off with the slightest brush. Is anyone able to look at their eye piece/suction cup attachment and see what's holding it in place. All I have is the suction cup which seems to just sit on the viewfinder. I feel as if there's something missing so hoping someone can look at their camera and see what' what.

any help would be massively appreciated.

Thanks.

645z hot shoe is turned off above 1/125. As Darryl says above, the only way to overcome this is ND Filters. It's a huge pain but I've learned to live with it. I hope Pentax might release a firmware update and undo the hot-shoe off problem.

I had this problem. I went for a next day delivery from Clifton Cameras (UK). The next problem is that my laptop like most modern laptops does not have a cd drive. It's bonkers that no one has this as a digital download.

I've emailed Thomas separately but just to keep everyone updated - After a lot of complaining and about a week after the initial malfunction I was sent a replacement camera which In the end I was told to keep rather than switch back once my faulty camera had been fixed. This was all organised through the retailer but I did speak to a service rep at Pentax who i believe helped remedy the situation quicker than had i not spoken to him. I hope Pentax can arrange some sort of professional level service in future.

Yes, I completely agree. Pentax have clearly aimed this camera at the pro level and so they need pro level customer service to go with it.

Fingers crossed this problem may well be resolved promptly through the supplier but I sort of expected Pentax to offer a premium service to resolve these issues quickly.

Yeah I'm based in UK,. Spoken to both Pentax support and Supplier. Supplier proving more helpful.

I've written a blog with a little praise and a little moan about my experience with the 645z so far. There are a couple of portraits on there and I'll probably tweet it to Ricoh Imaging UK tomorrow and see if it sparks any sort of response.

My first point of contact was with Pentax because I need a replacement/loan camera urgently and thought they might be a better start point. This is the experience I'm moaning about, I was a bit taken back by how bad it was.

I own a Fuji x100 which costs less than a tenth of the 645z but as one of Fuji's 'premium' products they have an appropriate customer service for faulty 'premium' cameras. Replaced quickly whilst they sort the fault out. Canon Professional Service offer something similar. As the Pentax 645z is one of Pentax's premium products and likely to be used by professionals I was hoping they might offer something similar.

I'm now talking to the retailer who are talking to the Pentax rep so I'll keep the post updated as I progress.

Sorry bad choice of phrasing on my part, I didn't mean the actual financial price one pays but more the relative detrimental customer experience. It's a new and comparatively small venture for Pentax and perhaps they don't have the customer support expected by the photographers that are using their MF products that Hassy and Phase One have.

For example I've had issues with a Hassy H4D before on a shoot and their tech department arranged for a new body to be couriered the same day. Hasselblad and Phase One are used to dealing with professionals on jobs using their equipment whereas it seems Pentax are not.

I'm in the middle of shooting a reasonable sized jobby and to be told to post the camera back at my own expense and convenience with no replacement/loan in my opinion is not acceptable.

The joy of early adoption...

Spoken to Pentax tech support today and it seems I'm going to have to return my 645z. The rear wheel is not functioning at all. It stopped a few days ago and started again but now it's completely non functioning. Anyone else experienced this? I've tried every button combination to get it going plus resetting the camera but so far nothing.

Hugely disappointed with Pentax support. They've asked me to post the camera at my own expense and convenience back to them? No mention of replacement cameras. That is terribly poor customer service, especially considering the cost of the camera. They could take a leaf out of Fuji's book who arrange couriers and replacement cameras very quickly. I guess that is the price one pays for buying into a Pentax MF over a phase one or hassy.

Not a happy customer.

I think you are correct Dreamsong. I've been playing around with the camera and flashes this morning and it all points to that being the case. A little frustrating to not have the option fire a flash at shutter speeds faster than the native sync speed.

---------- Post added 08-04-14 at 07:31 AM ----------

Also looks as if it's a hardware limitation so no hope of a firmware fix in the future. Back to ND's it is.... If anyone knows a hack around this I'd be interested to hear.

Hi,

I've been playing around with external lights and the 645z. Am I right in thinking the 645z shuts off the hotshoe at shutter speeds faster than 1/125? I cannot get a flash to fire above 1/125. It's as if the signal is not being sent from the camera. I hope this is not the case, or at least there is a way to disable?

Any help is appreciated.
