That's not much of a rule nowadays. Unless you're talking high-budget movie and commercial work. I'd say we do over 90% of our (professional) video productions using DSLRs like EOS 5Ds and such. Most customers just won't cough up the budget for a RED or ALEXA anymore. Their quality is indisputable, but for most film work you really don't need it.
Just as one uses multicopters for aerial takes nowadays, rather than helicopters. It's way cheaper, more flexible, and for "getting it done" it's usually good enough.
In food terms, if you will, a spork might not be perfect for either soup or spaghetti. It doesn't have style either. But it will get the job done without ruining your new tie. ;)
I love Pentax. But as I work in film, I find it quite annoying that it's not much use for it.

There's no uninstall routine like in Windows. Just putting the application into the trash works well enough.
But I use AppCleaner to find all these little configuration, library files and whatnot. They're usually rather small and shouldn't get in the way, but I like it tidy. ;)
Just drop the application you want to remove into it and you can delete it, and everything associated with it, in one go. Has served me well for years.
/edit: oh, since you deleted the application already the cleaner won't be of much use. But next time, maybe. :)

So it just stops the record after 7 minutes? Sounds rather silly, that it doesn't continue recording while just creating new files once the size limit is reached. Like other systems do. One still needs to combine the separate files later on, but you get a seamless clip out of it.
But, I guess, that Pentax really isn't meant for video enthusiasts. :hmm:

A big majority of EU parliament just voted this down, so freedom of panorama doesn't get more restricted for now.
But laws in EU still vary. Right now one isn't allow to take/publish photos of the Eiffel Tower at night, because its light installation is copyrighted due to French laws, even if the tower itself isn't. Will be interesting to see if the copyright reform in fall will change any of that.

Well... that was money sent down a drain. :mad:
In the last update they announced a delay due to some manufacturing issues and such.
Now they pulled the plug. App developer doubled its price (during campaign there was no mention at all, that app was still in development! All they asked was for production funding) and some other troubles.
They're down to 40% of their funds by now and decided to reimburse backers with what is left, rather than using it all without seeing a realistic chance of releasing a product in the end. Hats of for that, I guess. But since their stated biggest risk was a delivery delay, this came as a true shock.
Sadder than for the money lost I am about this product not getting released. :(
They made a deal with Cinetics for 25% off. But having it sent from USA and the exchange rate makes it way too expensive for me for, what seems to me, an inferior product.
What a bummer to ruin the weekend. Could have gotten some fine glass with that...

I attended an award ceremony of my nephews skiing school once. 200 kids from 3 to 13, plus their parents and grandparents. With a huge collection of DSLRs, albeit no Pentaxian as far as I could tell. I was sent there as my sister couldn't attend and wanted me to take a few pics of her kid. As soon as the ceremony started all them DSLRs jumped up and rushed to the stage. It was truly a mob of paparazzi, and no one else was able to see a thing anymore with all them cameras raised into the sky. I didn't bother joining the ruckus and didn't take a single photograph. :hmm:
Luckily my little sis was quite understanding in how I did not want to fight them over-competitive, flesh-eating helicopter parents.
But the school learned from this and placed a bunch of tables with seating in the following years, as well as calling the kids on stage one after the other. It got way more relaxed thanks to this.

You can use one flash to do flash composites.
For product shots it's not too hard. You have a fixed camera and take several photos of the object while moving the flash around. In post processing you add those single images together to relight the scene as you wish. See here (in German, but the slideshow should give you the idea).
Here is an example of a wedding shot. Not sure I like the results, but hey, it's about the technique used. This takes a lot more planning and care though, since the models can't move (too much) for it to work: GLO Photography Houston | Photography Techniques | Flash Composite |

I guess it's like one of these optical illusions. It depends on what your brain first settles with, which optical clues it picks out to make the image "click":
But there's so much going into how we perceive colour. It even depends on if you had coffee or not or you got a cold, because that impacts how perfused your retina is.

The project now reached its funding goal... and I pledged for the full system. :confused:
There's some extras one could add, slide extensions, gears and such, but that's getting a bit too pricey for me. Maybe something to add another time. The smallest gear will move at 0.04 mm/sec at slowest speed (regular gear from 0.07mm up to 47mm). So it should be nice for macro work, too.
I just hope July comes fast! :D
In case you are interested: funding ends this Sunday, so you could still pledge for it.

Can't say I ever had people yelling at me. I don't get into their faces, they don't get into mine. Maybe they just don't know that "Pentax" is a real camera? :confused:
But for some reason one recent shoot made drivers step on their brakes all the sudden, causing a minor traffic jam behind us.
Couldn't think of any reason why... people are just so very odd sometimes.

Thank you for those links. The screw driven rail would mean a lot better and tighter control, especially for macro work. But I'm rather doubtful that I'm handy enough to do the control board myself. I've been looking around for some alternatives, but it seems such motion control systems don't get cheaper than that kickstarter. Not if you want three axis movement.
Well, I still got a week to think it over. If I'm lucky my boss will just get one for his shoots, or possibly rent it from me. :D

Some while ago I barely resisted backing the Genie motion control project. Just couldn't afford it at the time. Now I checked back into Kickstarter to see what time lapse or motion control projects might be out there. Discovering this interesting piece:

London based company offering a tempting one to three axis control system. Starting price ain't too bad, but the full thing does cost a grand. Just thinking off the possibilities it's oh so tempting. The app looks nicely done as well, don't like the modules built-in batteries, though.
Recording motion data to use for post processing could be sweet, but I wonder how accurate the results will be when using smartphone sensor inputs.
What do you think about such equipment? Or do you know anything available already? Possibly cheaper or better thought through?

I don't know about the K-50, but I found camera manuals to be pretty useless. At least for the newcomer. Just explaining, barely, that there is this and that setting. I spent years on automatic with my first DSLR due to this (and for not joining this board ;)). Purchasing a book specific to my new camera was an eye opener, and I can but recommend it. Besides camera specific knowledge it taught me so much about basic techniques I had no idea about.

Congratulations to the winners. Great to see how the big prizes went to some well-contributing members of the community. :)
At the start I was compelled to do my best to enter into the contest. But I just didn't have enough meaningful things to say, nor photos to share. And, so very quickly, every single post I made felt like a chore, always part of the competition. Even just welcoming new members, which I love to do otherwise.
And, where the forum is very active anyways, the blast of new posts was... well, too much for me to keep up with.
In the end it made me stay away from the boards completely for pretty much all of November and half of this month. I just didn't like this feeling of competitiveness it created at all. It still feels a bit weird to be browsing here again, even if that does sound rather silly.

So it does seem rather philosophical after all. In the end you pick the tool for the results you want.
At first crop factor was declared to make the digital move easier for analog users. Whereas someone purely digital like me sees it more like extra focal length for less money. Not because manufacturers advertise it as such, but because I don't have any comparison to the old age and interpret it that way.

I used to have a Samsung GX-10. Crossover is a good way of putting it. :lol:
Back then I tried to save a few bucks but, even though it was almost identical to its Pentax sibling, it always felt that Samsung was lacking support in just so many ways. A few months back I finally made the move to the original and am greatly enjoying myself.
(and picked up so much by starting to browse here)

What happens when comparing a smaller 12 MP sensor to an (older) FF sensor with only 8MP? You'd get the longer reach of the lens and more pixels. Or, more likely, what if the pixel count is equal on both?
Of course, there's a limit to the MP-race, as adding more pixels to an ever smaller sensor diminishes quality.
And I'm sure, that a FF 24MP will be better than the K3's equal amount. But would the difference in IQ be so grand, for me as a hobbyist, to justify spending thousands more on a FF camera and FF lenses with 1.5 times higher focal range?
Not even counting increased size and weight into it.
I think I do get your point, and so it is great when there are choices for everyone. Thankfully for Pentax' medium format and soon FF there will be a plenty of them. But for me as an enthusiast I feel like I got a good balance with an APS-C and it's crop factor. :)
Who'd want to lug a 900mm lens around to go birding with their 6x7, no matter the IQ? ;)

Hope you made the right choice for your type of shooting.
I found the manual a tad useless. Yes, it tells your there's this and that setting. But not what to do with it. :confused:
You could check the PentaxForums K3 review, it has some advice on recommended settings, that ain't bad. And a more recent one I found helpful "Pentax DSLR shooting modes explained".
Anyhow, have fun with it and share some photos if you like. :)

As long as you enjoy your medium there's no reason to change it. Using film is just a different style to paint your pictures.
(Even more so for the ones doing the whole process and develop it themselves. Always found the darkroom work immensely impressive.)

Maybe I misunderstand the process but isn't that like cropping afterwards? Only using a smaller portion of the film/sensor sensitive area?
Ah, it seems any forum or hobby has at least one hot topic like this.
But in some ways this sounds like either a very technical or philosophical question. MP count rises, but pressing them on too small sensors and you still lose image quality (while "gaining" focal range). Technology keeps improving but, of course, at some point physics will get in the way.
Too many variables for me to understand. :o
But that's what reviews on PF are for... :)
