Well, the teacher is a bit a of a strange duck. I think he's a bit of a conspiracy theorist by some of the things he's driveled on about... But the question is a little out of context without my overall topic to go along with. But that's the point ;)

Poll: Poll for College COMM Class

As the final assignment for my College Communications Course I have to write a research report on the topic of my choice. I am looking for some data for my report and as such am asking the members of Pentax Forums -- as well as a few other online forums -- to participate in a simple poll.

The question is simple:
“Do Macintosh Users belong to an exclusive subsection of society?”

The available answers are:
Yes - And Mac Users are the only computer users to whom this would apply
Yes - And Mac Users are not the only computer users to whom this would apply
No - Using a Mac is a simply a personal choice

***

I would also ask that if you do happen to find this poll on other web forums that you please refrain from voting more than once. Discussion is invited and encouraged! Thanks again.

two questions about raw with my k100d

When you choose RAW you effectively ignore all other settings regarding the image. Choosing sRGB or Adobe RGB in addition to RAW changes nothing. In RAW, the camera actually captures more colour than Adobe RGB. From everything I've read ProPhoto RGB is the best choice of working space but there isn't a monitor in the world that can show that much colour.

For some more information take a look at this site.

I don't know about your RAW conversion discrepancies. It probably has something to do with the fancy algorithms or some other big words I don't actually understand! :o

Help selecting first lenses

I can't really make any recomendations on the lenses, as of yet I have three. I do use the 50 (not the f/1.4 one though, just f/2) and the 77 for portraits (The FA 77mm f/1.8 Limited is fantastic) but I will answer your questions.

I would think that the 40mm pancake would be pretty unobtrusive and for tighter shots you could use the 70mm (which is smaller, but slower than the 77). You'll need something wide for landscapes too.

1. A fast lens is a lens with a wide aperture. Most things I've read peg a fast lens at or below f/2.8.

2. When you read your lens name the f1.4 (I always type f/1.4) is the widest possible Aperture.

3. A constant aperture means that a zoom-lens maintains the same widest aperture throughout its focal length. On the kit-lens it is f/3.5 - 5.6. That means the widest aperture is different across the zoom-range.

4. A Macro lens has increased magnification compared to other lenses. A true Macro has a 1:1 ratio. That means the image will be projected onto the film/sensor exactly the same size as it is in real life (I believe this is dependant on how close you are...minimum focusing distance...someone else can clarify I hope).

5. A teleconverter increases the focal length of the lens. All you do is multiply the lenses focal length by the teleconvertor factor. That way you can greater reach without buying a more expensive telephoto lens. The downside is that they reduce the amount of light entering the camera (in other words change the widest aperture). And you must either use a slower shutter speed (harder as you increase focal length and don't use a tripod) or increase the light on your subject.

Hope that helps,
Sean B.

My Art teacher (being an Art teacher and all) got two free tickets but won't be able to go. He asked if I wanted them, so I have to convince my parents to take me - it's the weekend of my sister's birthday party but I'm swinging for Sunday. Hope Pentax has some "Promotional Prices" as I'm interested in investing in a flash.

If I can't convince them, I'm gonna try and get my dad's "photography business on the side" friend to take me.

K10D, Shake Reduction & Tripod

Before the Shake Reduction mechanism can work, it has to find camera shake. When you mount to tripod you eliminate the camera shake. The Reduction feature however, still looks for this shake by oscilating slightly; thus, causing it's own version of something like Camera Shake Reduction Shake :p...

Copyright Symbol.

On your Mac, in any Cocao application, go to Edit > Special Characters. The copyright symbol is found under Symbols, in Letterlike Symbols. If you can't find that, there is a search bar at the bottom of the window and type copyright into it, it will come up.

If in any non-cocoa app (ie. Photoshop) you must activate the pallette from the Finder. The window will "float" over any app and you can press the "Insert" button to insert the symbol.

Alternatively, you can go to System Preferences > Internation > Input Menu and activate the Unicode Input Method to use the Alt codes. You have to press the Option key on your Mac as the "Alt" key.

Oh, we went here on our schools Art's trip to New York a couple years back. I really loved that statue but most of the inside was blocked off (and my camera at the time sucked so I got no good pictures ). I really like your last one, of the high cross, it's really cool. I'd love to see it with the bright spot cropped out and both side brought in a little. I'm going on the New York trip again in October...hopefully we can go back here!

I put a regular UV filter on my lens (just for protection) and the cap does fit a little loosely now. I found that if I pull the cap out overtop of the filter then it fits tightly again.

Nice shots, I like the contrasty feel of the warm light and cold snow! Lightroom v1.0 will be relased soon and the betas will expire about 2 weeks after that. As for layers, I doubt we will ever see them in LR, that would compete too much with Adobe's own product; Photoshop. A clone/heal tool is present in v1.0, it is not a powerful as the one in Photoshop, or other graphics programs. I also hope that a better sharpen tool is implemented sometime, as long as its better than that stupid slider -- I can never seem to find a point between not sharp enough and too sharp.

'Lightroom' question.

I agree that the sliders can be jumpy but borno has it right, pull the drawer to widen them for better control. However, in the v1.0 release there is a tool for many adjustments called the Targeted Adjustment Tool (TAT). It allows you to click on the colour or area you want to adjust and drag up or down. It can be more precise as generally more than one colour is involved but we may not be able to perceive it.

BTW: v1. is released Feb 19. and 2 weeks later the beta will expire, but you can download a 30day trial to evaluate the release. It will cost US$199.00 til April 30, then price goes up to US$299.00. Edu pricing is US$99.00

I LOVE Lightroom :D

I agree with pretty much all of this. However, on the site I purchased my K100D from it lists a Pentax AF-140C Flash. It is a macro ring flash. I don't know how old or how good it is, but I thought I would point it out. Oh, and its expensive :o

Here's the link Pentax AF-140C Flash

full photoshop raw support for K10 on Feb 19

I agree that Photoshop is an indispensible tool, but I feel that Lightroom really cuts back on processing time. Lightroom is built to make global edits. The clone/heal tool is not as robust as the one in Photoshop but I can live with that. I have been using the beta since 2, and they work close to seamlessly. Also, I have never used Bridge as I'm still on version 7, but reports say that Lightroom is better tailored for organizing photographs than the Bridge, which is built to work with the entire Creative Suite.

As for Slipchuck's example, I have a feeling something similar could be done in Lightroom. I would probably adjust the fill light slider, black point, and then the tone curve. I would also have to adjust the denoise slider a little as fill light can and will bring out shadow noise. Nonetheless, this type of edit is probably still better done in Photoshop.

End of Production of FA lenses?

Well, I ordered the FA 77 1.8 a couple weeks ago, but nothing yet. I have been in contact with Pentax Canada and they said they "should be getting some shortly". This was about a week ago. I've also been in contact with Henry's (from whom I ordered) and they told me that according to their supplier (likely Pentax Canada); they are waiting for shipment from Japan (I think enough have accumulated but not yet shipped).

As long as they have it to me before my trip to Italy (March), I won't have to maim anyone ;)!

I would love to get the 31 also, but that's gonna be a long time coming 'cause their are a few things I want more. I really hope they don't discontinue them. Or they could bring the design back...:D.

My two favourite subjects are people and flowers. Since its the middle of winter, flowers sure aren't in abundance. My candids are a little lacking and need improvement but one thing I would love to try would be Studio Fashion shots. Don't have a studio though...

Poll: what's your main post-processing program?

My most used program is Adobe Lightroom. I use it for almost anything I have to do. If I need to do specific touch-ups (cloning, Dodge and Burn, etc.) I export and use Photoshop (version 7). But Lightroom, especially if they added a better sharpen and denoising algorithm, would suffice for 90ish% of my editing. I will be upgrading to CS3 upon release and most definately be purchasing Lightroom.

I have tried some of the others (Aperture and Bibble for RAW stuff, PSP as a Photoshop alternative) but always come back to the Adobe products. CS3 looks good, although I only got 2 days because I lack a CS2 code. The new B&W conversion tool is absolutely ingenious I think and will be taking full advantage of it.

Also, for those who may be interested, NAPP will be releasing a magazine dedicated to Lightroom. You can sign up for notification of its release at http://www.darkroommagazine.com/. And for all those PhotoShop users, be sure to download the Photoshop TV Podcast (real good watch!).

RAW converter, what do you use (K10D)

I don't know if you've tried it, but I just love Adobe's Lightroom! I still need PS for some things, but most of the stuff I do is right at my fingertips in Lightroom. I'm not sure if it supports the K10D's .PEF files, but it does support my K100D's. I will be purchasing it along with CS3 (also upgrading from 7) upon their releases.

If you wanted to send me a .PEF I could check it out for you.
