I hear you -- after finally picking up a Canonet, I've found that I like rangefinders in theory, but I'm just not in love with them in practice. Someone who will love & use it should have that beauty.

Oh, it didn't, and I'm sorry I wasn't more clear! Previous body was a K-500 that developed the aperture control issues common to K-500/K-50/K-30, and I talked myself into getting the upgrade that I was already thinking about, rather than spending more than the old body was worth on a repair. The K-70 is obviously brand new, but I've been very happy with it so far.

These are all from my K-70's first 24 hours at home, all JPEG's straight from the camera (except for a bit of brightness/contrast adjustment on the shed photo). I picked up this body because my previous one crapped out, and needless to say I'm thrilled with the upgrade:

K-70 + DA 50-200. Some day I'm going to need to paint this shed, and then what will I do for black/white/gray in sample shots?

Thanks! (And I absolutely don't mind about the rotation comment -- you're right on target, now that I look at it again, so thanks for that as well.)

One of those lucky accidents: I was wandering around town shooting today, and I stopped to capture this alley because I was struck by how the light at the far end was so much warmer than the mouth of the alley where I was standing. I shot a few shots and didn't even notice until I pulled them off the camera later that this man had come out of a doorway and was looking right back at me in the last shot. He makes the composition, IMO.

Welcome, fellow film fan! I suspect you've probably already found them, but just in case -- we have a Film SLR subforum in the cameras section, as well as a Film Processing subforum under Photography. Pentax and non-Pentax welcome -- we'll happily ooh and ahhh over your old toys either way.

Hope you'll forgive the intrusion of a digital body, since this was set up to be a family portrait of all my 50's :)

Thanks! The next time I find something this wonderfully creepy in the garden, I definitely plan to play around with a few more exposure/lighting options.

To set up this little story: I finally made the DSLR leap a whole 4 days ago, and I'm making an effort to shoot a lot of different styles, lenses, exposures, subjects, every day while I get to know the new toy. I don't normally shoot proper macro, but I have one manual macro lens that I adore, so today's challenge was to pair it with the new body and see what I could do with it. I found a bit of dried-up wasp's nest in the driveway on my way into the house, and I figured that with all the different textures and angles, not to mention its total lack of any desire to run away, it was a perfect subject to play at macro with.
I have no studio lights, but rigging up a white paper backdrop lit by my desk lamp seemed to fit with the spirit of playing with what I have to see what my new camera can do.
I have to say, I'm always impressed with what that 50mm macro can do: IMGP0114 by greenchick, on Flickr
However, I didn't count on having a studio assistant: IMGP0117 by greenchick, on Flickr IMGP0113 by greenchick, on Flickr

I'm sure I'll get around to trying it just to check it out, but yeah... not the reason I bought a camera, and I'd happy buy one without it.

There's very little difference between your 18-55 and a 16-50 for the effect you want to get -- instead of new toys (and I know -- it's ALWAYS tempting to get new lenses!!) you should experiment with your exposure. For the soft-focus waterfall look, you'll need to use a slower shutter speed, and then balance that with a smaller aperture (Which is denoted by a larger number. Confusing at first, I know.)
There's no substitute for experimentation with this -- pick a day when you have time & good weather, take a tripod out to your favorite waterfall, and shoot a whole lot of shots, making adjustments as you go: In Tv mode, adjust your shutter speed and observe how the camera compensates by adjusting the aperture, then compare the results. You'll have a good day out, you'll learn a lot about how exposure works, and hopefully get some shots you like in the process.

I posted this one in the Film subforum the other day, but I figured it could use a wider audience.
