This is fantastic, what filter did you use?

An hour and a half away in MS here. I'm pretty sure we had nearly the same maximum. What did you use as a filter?

Converted my 16-50 today. Got it used from KEH a year ago, DOA from the SDM not being used in a while. Immediately returned for free SDM replacement, They sent me the old one in a little bag with the same lens, so I know it was a new motor. That one got me through a conference I had to shoot and a trip to Yellowstone, then kaput. I'd love to get the Sigma, but losing full time manual is a big pain for me. Granted that may be because the SDM focus was inaccurate for me. Never a consistent front or back focus, it was all over the place. Screw drive is dead on now, it's just an assault on my ears after getting used to not having it.

Just did this with mine after its second SDM bit the dust. Pretty annoying. I had noticed it being sluggish for a few months and needing to warm up. Left it sitting for a month for school, and it's dead. None of the usual wake up tricks did a thing. I want to go to the sigma because it has less flare/fringe/other aberrations than the 16-50, but I'll lose weather sealing and full time manual capabilities. What to do....
After an hour of trying to get to the debug menu of my K5 since I'd read that the K3 couldn't be used for lens rom edits, I gave up and switched the to KX. Found the MODSET.492 file name easily, took me forever to find a thread saying I had to hold the AV button down on boot to get me there. The 16-50 actually focuses much more accurately and quickly in screw drive now. The noise is just weird for my now, I've got the Sigma 70-200 HSM II, the DA 18-135 WR, and the BigmOS, so focus noise was a thing of the past when my 16-50 was functioning. Alas, it is back. Like an itch on that one part of your back that you just can't quite reach.
Anyway, rant over. Thanks for the guide, OP! Much appreciated. Good to have a working lens again.

What maltfalc said. Based on the noise in the top shot, I'd say your ISO is way too high. That looks like ISO 8000+ by the standards of my K3. Try your ISO in the triple digit range with exposures that long.

I figured it was fixed by the newer lenses, but as krazykat said, there are issues with Sigma and CDAF. My 70-200 HSM II just bounces back and forth on live view and won't lock focus at all on my k3. Sigma said I could send it in for a firmware flash because the issue has been fixed, but that's a sports and headshot lens for me that I never use for tripod work anyway, so no need.
Since your 10-20 would likely be exclusively landscape, I see where cdaf would be useful. Call Sigma. Best I recall, you only have to pay shipping both ways for the fix.

Since my BigmOS came in last week, I can highly recommend it with the k3 for a cost friendly solution out to 500mm. The new OS HSM version is an entirely different monster than the original bigma.

The excellent results you mentioned are the reason I decided to send it.
Also, goldenarrow my plan b is to use a 35mm prime or a 50 prime if it doesn't come back in time. Not as prime of a situation (pun intended), but it will do on my budget.

good to know. Just bought a 16-50 from them, sdm was doa. Sending it out Monday for a repair. Glad I haven't needed my extended k3 warranty with all the terrible things I've heard about precision.

touche, sir. I will call then back and see if I can get it pushed though in time.
On the bright side, for bargain cosmetic condition, it looked brand new. I'll be sending it in Monday in hopes that they can replace it, otherwise they'll repair it. If they can't replace it, I'll push for the expedited repair.

True. If I hadn't bought it for a a functioning sdm lens, then I would be happy at that price. Keh offered to do the repair, but it would take 6-8 weeks and I needed it for an event in January, so it would cut it close.

the bag said tested and working, which is why I'm really surprised. Any other tips? I've tried the whole spin the focus ring to unstuck the clutch trick and cleaning the contacts, no luck.
It was listed as bargain, but no defect listed that I saw. Edit: they aren't closed for the week yet, I'll call them back now!
Well, there are no more that grade in stock. Now the question is return, repair or replace with one that requires me shelling out more cash for a higher grade. Or convert to screw drive, defeating the purpose of silent focus. Decisions...

well, just tried this on my 16-50 from keh and the sdm is still dead. I suppose it will be going back next week then. Sad day, I thought it was a good bargain. I could convert to screw drive, but I wanted silent focus. I guess I may get the Sigma instead now.

I also just found out that for all items excluded from the black friday sale (such as the overstocked DA* 16-50), you can apply code AF44196 at checkout for 10% off and free shipping over $49.99. That being said, I just snagged a bargain condition DA* 16-50 for right at $300 USD shipped. There are several better quality ones left for anyone interested, I figured I could afford to take a chance on the bargain one. Worst case scenario I end up converting it to screw drive or sending it back.

I'm surprised that no one has posted this yet, but KEH is having a good sale today. 20% off used cameras, 30% off used lenses, and 50% off used accessories. I just scored a like-new BigmOS at 30% off, so I felt like it was a deal worth sharing. They still have an EX condition BigmOS if anyone else wants to join in on the fun ;) https://www.keh.com/
Use coupon code BLACKFRIDAY. Does not apply items with existing overstock discounts.

awesome, I'll keep that in mind if I make it past the Rockies. I'm from Mississippi, so I haven't decided if I'll be making the southern route to California or the northern route back to Yellowstone. 27 hours to Yellowstone and 28 to Bishop. Given that I will be with my family, going back to Yellowstone is the likely option. I guess that's just the excuse I needed to buy the BigmOS. ;)

Excellent shots!! I'm not familiar with the characteristics of that lens. Was that vingetting post crop or the result of the lens/cpl? Either way, I think adds a nice character to the photo. I'm looking forward to going back out west a rockier climate this summer with hopes to see some sights like this. Thanks for sharing!

well guys, thank you all for the information. I did some more reading and read that most stadium lights are wired in three phase systems so it isn't too big of a problem. Either I'd just never noticed the problem in that particular stadium or they've rewired everything into the same phase for some reason. I know it isn't an issue in my college stadium and some of the high school stadiums I've been to, so they all must be wired in offset phases.
Also, excellent shots, Brooke.

Yeah, makes perfect sense, I understand the electrical principles of it all, I am just shocked that I've never encountered this issue before, or at least noticed it.

that wasn't the sky. It was a wall in a room either fluorescent bulbs.
And I'll be a son of a monkey's uncle. You nailed it, BrianR and Adam. I've never had that issue in that stadium before, but I just shot 1/500 under incandescents and it's totally fine. Shot again in another room of my house under fluorescents and the band is there. I guess it's possible that the other times I'd shot there I just got incredibly lucky, or the different sets of lights were all somewhat out of phase and lit evenly. I knew those light sources were all based on waves, but I guess I had never encountered this issue with them all being in phase.
Thanks again guys! I can stop being mad at my k3 now. I'll shoot daylight tomorrow to make sure, though.
Will
Well, thanks guys!

Here they are. I just realized the ones of her are at 1/500, but the ones of the wall are at 1/320. The following set was also at a stadium with the same lens at 1/320 shot the first weekend in September. No issues with these.
