I suspect you may have just raised the sale value of all the "dead" SDM lenses, for which I am sure many current owners will be thankful.

Pentax SDM Motor

Converted my 16-50 today. Got it used from KEH a year ago, DOA from the SDM not being used in a while. Immediately returned for free SDM replacement, They sent me the old one in a little bag with the same lens, so I know it was a new motor. That one got me through a conference I had to shoot and a trip to Yellowstone, then kaput. I'd love to get the Sigma, but losing full time manual is a big pain for me. Granted that may be because the SDM focus was inaccurate for me. Never a consistent front or back focus, it was all over the place. Screw drive is dead on now, it's just an assault on my ears after getting used to not having it.

30% off used lenses at KEH

I'm surprised that no one has posted this yet, but KEH is having a good sale today. 20% off used cameras, 30% off used lenses, and 50% off used accessories. I just scored a like-new BigmOS at 30% off, so I felt like it was a deal worth sharing. They still have an EX condition BigmOS if anyone else wants to join in on the fun ;)

Glad it came off!

Now that it's fixed and the OP should be less worried, how is it that no one commented on the irony of that pun in the title? Screwed up, because it's... Oh nevermind.

ISO Settings

Oh, I thought that was just for EV metering steps if shooting aperture priority or shutter priority (or auto, but I doubt many k3 users do such a thing). That option actually changes the ISO steps as well? Interesting. I'll have to play around with that after work. I got my K3 Friday and absolutely love it.

How do I take a photo like this?

Generally primes have better bokeh. You could do it with a long lens, but it would (probably) need it to be a macro to focus close to you based on ow far you are from the lights. I just did a web search, and if you search for 'bokeh number of blades', or in your case '7 blade bokeh', you can see some of the shapes.

What is the best remote to purchase to use with my new K-3?

Starting with the GTab 2 in the tablet line and the S4, there is an IR blaster at the top of the phone near the headphone jack. You can download a paid remote app with universal IR functionality if you want to use it for a lot of things, but there is another one I use (don't remember the exact name, just search dslr remote) that works with most major camera brands.

The dslr remote app has timers, intervalometer settings, and lots of things. There is even a night mode were everything goes to red and black to keep from totally killing your night vision (assuming you leave it on the app screen not the lock screen or flashlight, obviously). I really like it. I started using it in a pinch while I was in London and just decided to keep using it. It doesn't have a super long range, but it is great for triggering remote sots and still being in them. I mainly use it for purposes where I don't want to touch the camera and mess up the shot. I will definitely start using it with my new K-3 using the mirror lockup function once it comes in :D.

Plus, if you already have the hardware, you don't have to spend money on a remote, or carry an extra device. There are other brands with this feature besides Sammy, that just happens to be what I use.

Thanks, all!

I did 15 secs between to give the camera a little cool down time, and allow for a little extra star movement. Any space between the stars covered when I stacked them. The better one with the house was stacked in Photoshop CC using the statistics function set to maximum with autoalign unchecked.

Uh... I'm pretty sure it was in the neighborhood of 3.5. Possibly 2.8, but I'm pretty sure it was either 3.5 or 4. It was about as wide open as I could shoot without blowing out the highlights.

After the Rain

Hi all! Thank you for taking the time to read my contest submission.

I am currently a junior in college studying polymer science. Prior to June 2014, I had never owned a camera aside from my smartphone. After saving up enough money to go on a study abroad trip to London, Ypres, Normandy, Paris, and Rome, I decided that I would get a decent camera to photograph some of the sites since I had never left the United States before. I decided on the Pentax K-x because it was quite affordable and my mother had owned one and liked it. I ordered my white “Stormtrooper” K-x used from eBay with plans to resell it as soon as I got back and use the money for school. By the end of the trip, I had learned to use my camera fairly well, as I shot in manual mode the entire time. After taking around 8,000 pictures during the four and half weeks that I was away, I was totally hooked. I discovered Pentax Forums pretty soon after I got back stateside, and it has definitely fed my photography addiction. I have learned a considerable amount from words and photos from the more seasoned photographers on the forums. I feel that if selected, I would get a lot of use out of this lens. The wide aperture would be great upgrade over the kit lens and would allow me greater flexibility in techniques as I continue to learn.

After much careful review and discussion with friends, I have decided against busy, complex long exposure night shots (which are my favorites to shoot) in favor of this sunset after a rain taken from my University’s parking garage, as I feel the simplicity and minimal post processing captures the heart of nature’s beauty.

like crewl1 stated, good luck to all! I am looking forward to seeing what kind of great shots the other newer Pentaxians put up! Thanks to the OP's generosity, we have all (or at least I have) had the chance to learn more about ourselves as photographers, and for that I am thankful.
