Bent Power contact. (DFA* 85 but may affect others)

I think we'd all acknowledge the aperture block and SDM failures are well-known and widespread Achilles' heels of some now-discontinued products. I never experienced the former because I didn't own any of the affected bodies, and my only DA* SDM lens - the DA*60-250 - was seldom used and eventually sold (it never suffered from the problem, though... perhaps because it was a later production run).

The SDM tabs on Pentax lenses are definitely a potential weak point. Using members here as a reference, I don't believe it's a widespread issue, but it certainly seems common enough to take extra care (and frequently inspect) when changing lenses.

The gears cracking on FA Limited lenses also seem to be a potential weak point, as we've had a few users experience the problem - but again, it doesn't seem to be widespread. Same with the tripod foot on the 150-450.

I can't comment on the F*300 other than to say it's a pretty old lens now, and things don't last forever...

Your experience seems to be a combination of fairly heavy use and bad luck :o I'm not such a heavy user as you (though my K-5 and K-3 are rather well-used by now, as are several of my lenses), but aside from the dead backup battery in my Q, and an occasional mirror flop on my K-3 in the early days, I've been very fortunate.

Personally, I don't think general reliability is a significant issue with Pentax gear... as in, I don't believe it's any worse - nor necessarily any better - than the other brands, on balance; but Ricoh certainly hasn't excelled in customer support for affected products (especially with the aperture block and SDM issues), and the inability to source spares is a perennial frustration. Relatively minor issues become bigger ones when it's impossible to get hold of simple parts...

FA 200 or DA 200?

I have to say... I really love the look of all F lenses. The F* look like indestructible but elegant tanks, and the regular F lenses have that Star Wars vibe that I dig.

Woo hoo! Rare "get", glad some of my discussion in the reviews helped in some small way! The extension tube was the solution for me on the crop sensor.

A system like this is the only way I could envision a "hundred thousand" image copy session. Be careful to retain the Kodachrome color palette if possible. Your digital settings will almost certainly alter the colors and I'm not sure that shooting RAW and batch processing will prove to work well since color cast in the images will vary depending not only on the film but on the light conditions when the originals were shot. To work with hundreds of thousands of images means trying to individually "massage" each image as a RAW capture would require decades of your time! Experiment a bit with the neutral Kelvin settings which could retain atmospheric conditions--like sunsets--in the originals without too much change.

Good luck with your project!

Additionally, you seem to be planning for the highest resolution RAW files you can possibly get on all the copies. Since max resolution would likely only be of value for images selling to a publisher or for extremely large prints, I can't believe that even a tiny fraction of those hundreds of thousands of images would merit such treatment. I'd copy the 200 or so images that might be sale-worthy with large RAW files if you are so inclined but with various film emulsions all shot presumably in differing natural light you will not be able to batch process for color cast. This makes adjusting for color cast while shooting the far better option to save you a few decades of post processing time. And note that though I'm not a true professional photographer I have sold more than 1000 images for publication including full page glossy images and cover photos and I'm 'fessing up here--I'VE NEVER SHOT A RAW IMAGE NOR POST PROCESSED A SINGLE RAW IMAGE. I've sold 30x40" prints for several thousand dollars and shoot primarily for support materials for my articles and books and nowadays paid blog content and I've never been able to come up with a single reason to even consider shooting RAW. I don't shoot snapshots but all well planned and dialed in JPEG's (I select color rendition through several methods provided in our cams--often through choices like the Reversal Film option or Kelvin scale). Sorry to ignore the truth about RAW offering more range for change, but I'm only interested in saleablility and shooting RAW has absolutely nothing to do with the marketability of images! But though not shooting RAW I go overboard to make in-camera settings work for me...I go so far as to bracket white balance on key images to avoid having to do it in post. But that's my bent. The fun of photography is we all get to choose our own "bent"

---------- Post added 01-08-22 at 11:57 AM ----------

Couldn't resist doing a little math.
150,000 images at one minute per copy equals a year and a quarter of full-time 40 hour work weeks to copy them all. And that's at a blazing one minute per image for the copy and processing.
At a more realistic 3 minutes per image that would be 4 years of copy work at 40 hours a week!

If you don't push and take your time and choose to post process each RAW image and it takes a reasonable 5 minutes per image you are looking at over 6 years of working 40 hours a week!

Probably forced to batch process and lose the individual color cast of each image to ever complete the project?

B&H Used Department has this extremely difficult to find item: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/802286036-USE/pentax_slide_holder_1x_...981&

I adore mine and it works really well. I wrote up a sample of my experiences with the item and it's in the reviews here on the forum: PENTAX Slide Holder 1x, K reviews - Pentax Camera Accessory Review Database

If you have slides or negatives from the film era, in my opinion, this is the best option to digitize them!

Irix Dragonfly 150 2.8 Macro 1:1 $299

Hey,

I was just seeing that Irix announced an Dragonfly 45 1.4, and then on the Pentax In-Depth Lens Reviews I saw one recently for a similar 150 2.8. I have a Tam 90 2.8, but I have always thought about adding a 135mm at some point... so it seemed kind of similar. Never had an Irix, but I've heard really good things. I do really like the look of them (kind of like a Samyang/Rokinon, but the next step).
Irix 150mm F2.8 Macro Review - Introduction | PentaxForums.com Reviews

On Amazon they have the same lens, from the same retail/manufacturer in 'Good' condition for $299 (listed $495). You have to click the other sellers option... but if you look, I think you'll see that its from the same company/location as the 'New' full-price. Not sure what 'Good' means, but figured coming from the actual company seems like a good sign... and a pretty good deal!!

Listed at $500 plus actual shipping but the seller said the Make Offer option is set to auto-accept at $475.

Seems to be in excellent condition with original case, hood and front cap. Rear cap appears to be Pentax (which is better IMO).

Sigma Art 35mm f/1.4 HSM DG Lens For For PENTAX/RICOH

This is one of the sharpest and fastest 35mm AF lens available for Pentax at the moment. I absolutely love mine.

15% off Pentax gear at KEH

Re: that FA*300, I bought and returned a bargain-graded copy of that lens from KEH a few months ago and returned it because it was grinding and displaying odd focus behavior. A similar graded copy showed up for the same price a few weeks later and was purchased. Now this one shows up with the same grade and price. I don't know if it's the same lens or not, but if someone here bought it, make sure you put it through its paces during the return period.

Likes . . .

1. Everything but the button customisation.

Dislikes . . .

2. Button customisation limitations.

I wish ALL the buttons were marked, A, B, C, D . . . and you could program them how you want.

Green button becomes AF button;
Playback button becomes Green button;
AF back button becomes AF mode button;
AE-L button is made larger and becomes the Metering mode button;
AF mode button becomes AE-L button;
Metering mode button becomes Playback button;
LV button stays in the same place but 2nd control for fast deletion;
Info button becomes D-pad selector button or D-pad selector button is made larger;
D-pad selector button becomes Info button;
Lock button customised to [Disable/other function].

I find the back button AF too recessed and tricky to reach. It's much better on the battery grip. In future models, perhaps having the AF back button as a pressure sensor in the rear thumb rest might work.

KEH has discounts up to 20% on film and digital gear:

http://mail.keh.com/public/?q=preview_message&fn=Link&id=6bp7nv4o25of712xgdk...ssid=35627&t=3

I had to call to get the film discount on an FA*300, but their customer service was great.

They have an FA 77mm Limited for $599 prior to discount.

I have the Clik elite venture 30. It will hold my k3 with sigma 50-150 attached plus a few other primes. Also enough room to get my two flashes in there as well. The top part is plenty big to hold a jacket and some other stuff. Plus the very top compartment has plenty of room for accessories.
