Just a pedantic note here that the 100-400L isn't weather sealed (great lens though, mine's sharp wide open across the range, and the USM focus is astonishing) and I don't think the 400mm f/5.6 has IS ;).

Why there is no zoom lens below f/2.8?

Heh - total hijack here but... Yeah, I went back and forth on those two, but it came down to the wider lens 24mm vs. 28mm on the Canon, HD video, and fear of the rear dial on the S90 (I would love it in normal shooting, but I'm buying the little camera to have something I can shoot while flying a helicopter, so I need bump resistant controls and that control wheel could give me trouble).

I just ordered a Panasonic Lumix LX3 with a 5.1-12.8mm f/2-2.8 lens :p... That's a pretty fast 24-60mm (equivalent fov) lens. Of course it's easier if you're only needing to cover a tiny sensor...

Here's my homebrew lightroom preset to deal with PF... It's just desaturates and darkens the purple channel and works pretty well for me when I need it (unless of course there's purple in the photo :p).

Well, my shots are often poorly exposed or unsharp, so clearly you're not talking about me :p, but I will say that while I've been active in the outdoors my whole life, and I love playing at wildlife photography - I have no deep understanding of the animals I'm pursuing. Every time I go out in pursuit of birds, I learn something more about their behavior, and in ten or twenty years I may know a thing or two about them (and even know the names of a few).

"The wildlife it's self is nothing more than an excuse to putz around with their gear."
For me, you can reverse this statement... The gear and the pursuit of photography in general is an excuse to get out in nature. I've found that when I'm in photography mode, I'll walk an extra few miles to see what's over that next summit or around the next bend in the river, and when the sun sets and I put my camera away, I'm shocked at how far away the car is...

Heh - I've run after a heard of Elk before  didn't work, but you'll never know if you don't try :p... The sun had just set when I rounded a bend and saw a heard in the distance... I was trying to close the distance enough to get a shot of the heard, and I only had a few minutes of light left, but of course, as you already knew, a running biped is seen as a threat by the herd and they bugged out - oh well, it was fun.

Now it's my turn to think out loud...

Does the A*400/2.8 incorporate a "Floating" lens element or group? These are supposed to compensate for aberration differences at different focus distances...

My theory is that the absence of a filter offset the focus point (decreased the backfocal distance as described by others) and caused Lee to have to correct focus by turning the focus ring and moving the elements, but if a floating element or group is used, this new position would incorrectly correct for aberration, since it would be improperly positioned with regard to the actual focusing distance. This doesn't explain why dadipentak is able to get good results without a rear filter however ... Also note that I'm way out of my depth here and have no idea what I'm talking about ;)...

Lee, I have no idea if this is correct, but my guess is that the DOF at 400mm f/2.8 may be so shallow that the focus detection system doesn't believe it's in focus even when it's really really close.

Edit with another question: Do you have a proper filter in the rear filter holder? I have heard that these rear filters are part of the optical design of this sort of lens, and sharpness suffers without one in place (however on my Tamron 400mm, I couldn't detect a difference with or without the filter).

Heh :o, yeah, sorry - I wanted to do this, but I couldn't get to it before I forgot, and then I forgot... I do also have a technical constraint - distance... You mention 10m, but the most I can get in my house would be about 4m or so (just eyeballing it...). Is that distance enough to get you data (I'm not too inclined to go out at night to do this ;))? If so I will try to do some shooting for you.

The quality here is amazing! Super shot Susan (and I consider myself burned out on Antelope Canyon shots generally :p (though I still post cliche Yosemite shots, so I shouldn't complain;)))... Great composition on this one, and the tight sun beam is perfect...

With the sand bags, you could do something like this... I think people also will drape sandbags over their lens to add mass and absorb vibrations, but I haven't actually done that (actually I haven't done the first suggestion of laying the lens across a sandbag, but I have laid my lens across other things and it's a very stable position)...

This seems to be a really good discussion of "Long Lens Technique".

Thanks Marc - Not doin' too much around here lately... I have had some fun days skiing, and then got a cold for a week and a half. Been shooting a bit, but not enough - that'll change soon, wildflowers are coming soon in California :)...

Just saw I got three more in, so four out of five this round...

It's very rare to see mammatus clouds like these in California (shot the same day as the twisted tree shot)...

Lee - how are you going about the actual shooting? I've found that when using too light a tripod, I got far far better results keeping my left hand on the lens applying some pressure (above the mount point is the usual advice - I often hold my hand in the same position I would for hand holding a lens), my right hand gripped firmly on the grip, and my eye/face pressed to the eyepiece and back of camera. Many of the vibrations you're dealing with on a tripod (I think) are in reality oscillations, and the small amount of movement I'm introducing by touching all that equipment is a small price to pay for damping out any tendency for things to oscillate.

As a test, do you have any sandbags around? A pillowcase full of dirt? If we can rule out vibration, we can then start to worry about focus... Also is SR turned off - obviously it is when shooting w/ a 2 sec. timer, but for other shots, remember to turn it off when using a tripod.

Thanks so much Peter - I got lucky with the sky on that one :).

@ Sealonsf - I agree about the stair shot (as well as some of the other shots you've had accepted lately)... That's exactly the sort of thing that needs to be getting into ppg. Great shot!

I would be sorely tempted by the 50mm, and that would be my choice for use on a full frame camera, but I voted for the 35mm. Can't beat a fast normal lens and AF is useful to me as well.

I'm assuming you paid and that's the last you heard from the seller? That's bad news - might be a scam, or just something bad happened in the sellers life and they can't get to (or forgot to get to) the internet. Have you tried all available means to contact the seller? Some people have an email link in their profile so you can email them directly in case they don't check their private messages.

I'm assuming you already tried to contact 'em with no success - I would by all means let Adam know (the site Admin - you can contact him by PM, and his account name is simply "Adam") or one of the moderators, they might be able to help contact the seller, or may want to take action on the sellers account (I don't really know how this is handled). If you paid by paypal, now might be the time to open a claim with them too.
