This lens is very versatile, you can perform a rear tube/housing swap and convert it to full frame with a little time and know how...

There's three Pentax lenses in that picture, two smaller ones on top side by side, and the canon below, I'd be happy to have the smallest of the set..Pentax used to make really nice tripod support in the day.

Those 150-450 pic look terrific, I'm surprised its outperforming the EX 500/f4.5, a lens that more than twice the price. Please keep shooting and posting more pictures as you go. -Regards

Like upgrading from your Audi A6 2010 to the 2013 model. It's all but identical, feels familiar, but the new one is better overall, tighter, sharper, quicker. (comes with that new smell as a bonus)

The specs look good, they don't seem to showcase a "substantial" improvement over the older K1 but then again the K1 is already a great camera. I don't see any specs on the sensor. Looks to me like an v1.5 upgrade rather than a 2.0.

Here's some residual photos from my telephoto lens calibration over the weekend. All the pictures have been taken with the DA 1.4x attached, @ f8.0 on a tripod, MUP with remote shutter. The F 135 has remarkable IQ given for it's age...i love the little guy
Size comparison between the lenses, in case someone wants to compile an IQ/ size graph...
On a side note, once the lenses hood are taken in consideration, the size advantage of the F 135mm its all but negligible ;) |

I've been a pentax user for close to a decade now (a tadpole compared to some lifelong members here) My first Pentax camera was a used K20D, amazing in all respects apart from the aperture lever issues which hit soon after. In that moment I reluctantly made the the transition from the safety of autofocus into full manual. I cut the focusing screen from an old ME body to fit my K20D, hit every salvation army in the area for old M42, K, KR mount lenses, from old Takumars and Tessars, to Yashica’s and Fujinon’s. At times I cannibalized Minolta, Exacta and Rollei mounts to test non-compatible lenses out. As a novice photographer out of my depths the Pentax Forum was instrumental in helping me better understand photography and the characteristics of the old lenses.
With the new bodies and modern lens lineup sometimes there’s a bit of tunnel vision, the conversation turns to looking for the fastest, sharpest, fastest focusing lenses our biceps and checkbooks can support. Although I’m excited for the new D-FA* and DA* lenses I hope we keep things in perspective and not forget about the brand’s long pedigree and all the little gems out there...
Here’s two of my favorite old school (adapted) lenses, Tessar T 50mm f2.8 and Rollei 50mm f1.8 Planar

Birding/ wildlife photography is an expensive proposition, many PF members would attest to that. The DA* 300 is an excellent lens, but as other's have stated you always go for the longest lens you can carry. The bigger the lens, the more accessories you'll have to carry; tripod/monopod, gimbal head etc.
Here's a size comparison of some of the offerings in K mount
Left to right: Sigma EX DG 70-200 f2/8 HSM II, Da* 60-250 f/4, Sigma APO 400mm f5.6 Telelmacro, Sigma Ex Dg 300mm f2.8
Consider also the F*/Fa* 300 f4.5, excellent sharpness, and the smallest of the bunch

The price seems fair, but I'm apprehensive about not accepting returns especially as a new member. I would strongly encourage to change your return policy as a sign of goodwill. (Speaking from personal experience, as a seller on marketplace)

I've always liked the Tokina AT-X 280 Pro produced under Angenieux patent over two and a half decades ago. I feel it's a underrated lens, perhaps due to the blooming effect at larger apertures and poor performance wide open at the long end. I wanted to compare its IQ to more modern lenses, like the sigma EX DG 28 prime, which I had put up for sale and was about to find a new home. With the time running out, and the terrible weather over the weekend I decided to do a quick IQ test focusing on AT-X 280 performance at 28mm. I put up a comparative chart looking at the len's performance at center and corner. Camera was set on tripod, with 2s release, no correction and post was done on the images. Both images were shot with idential exposure settings. Although the Sigma is rated at f1.8 (and reads f1.7 on the Pentax body) I didn't see a noticeable difference in exposure between the two lenses, Sigma might be at touch brighter but definitely not twice as the specs suggest. Overall I was surprised by 280's performance, sharper than Sigma at the edges from 2.8-5.6, then both lenses equalizing at f8.0.
Let me know what you think.
